My fasting is usually high 5's,. The only way it made a step change down to that was the same as Andrew's, an aggressive low calorie diet and major rapid weight loss.

Struggling to understand this. Thought it would be good to do a liver Detox so basically all I have had throught the day is:

Homemade vegetable and lentil - a lot of it .... maybe 4 or 5 bowls throughout the day.
Water - a few litres
Kale and berry shake with maca and wheatgrass - c. 1 litre
Cider Vinegar and Cranberry tonic - Mug

Took a reading before dinner time soup/shake with 7.9 and 2 hours after 13.3 ?

struggling to understand how it was pretty much a fast all day and get higher numbers without food than I would with it. 13.3 is probably the highest I have ever recorded .... I am very rarely in double figures.
when you say vegetable and lentil soup do you mean root vegetable? combined with the lentils this could be a high carb meal and you are eating a lot of it...

Not sure what is going wrong in recent weeks. I have now been on the Newcastle Diet for 6 days ...... and if anything my fasting/ Morning GL's are increasing ????

Is it possible the less my theoretical blood GL becomes that the system panics and keeps dumping back in ???

It'll go down. It's your liver's reaction to a lack of glucose from carbs, and your body is probably going ketogenic. Many low carbers see increased fasting levels.

Great news .... in a twisted sense lol .... just that I was reading some of the others who did ND and they seemed to show an almost linear decrease in their GL as the days progressed.

Defo over last couple of days been feeling dizzy, tired and cold .... so probably well into ketosis now .... how long does that last ?

My partner was struggling with his levels for quite a while. Have done the low carb high fat diet for about 4 weeks now and they have improved. He still has bad habits though and I can't get him out of the evening snacking. He eats nuts, a tin of sardines, a piece of cheese, an avocado ........ non stop until midnight some nights. Then he doesn't sleep! He gets a few hours here and there, but rarely goes a full night. Consequently he sometimes does his blood at times like 5am. At this time it is generally not too bad, maybe 5.5ish. If he does it later, at say 10ish when he gets up, it is often higher. I would have thought it would have been the other way around. It's often not too bad if he takes it before dinner, at about 7pm. All very confusing! I am really careful with the food too, no bread, pasta, rice, potato, carby veg, etc.

Reading many of the posts of peoples levels; is it just me or is there a high proportion of people with what can only be described is VERY good GL ? I mean a lot of them are low ..... is it just the old sing the good news and hide the bad news ..... ie people who don't have decent levels don't advertise the fact ?
Some of that, I'm sure - but my experience across many medical forums is that those who seek out (and stay active in) medical forums are often those finding out what works when medical science still tells us it is a chronic progressive disease.

I'm likely one of the extremes - but I do enough research for any new condition that I diagnosed my daughter's rare disease when her doctor was sure there was nothing seriously wrong with her, told him what tests to run, he humored me and then started wiping the egg off his face by pretending it was his idea - he didn't need to be too embarrassed. I identified he disease in about a month - most of my daughter's peers went years from first doctor's visit to diagnosis.

Diabetes is no exception for me. By the afternoon of my diagnosis I had identified a low carb diet as an essential - and changed my diet that day. Within 3 days my BG was normal 97% of the time. At the moment, I'm actively researching whether to combine my LC diet (which manages by BG well, but does not induce remission) with either fasting or an 800 calorie variation of the Newcastle diet (the latter of which induced remission in a high percentage of the formal studies).

My challenge will come when diabetes is no longer a novelty (~3 years down the road) - one of the reasons I want to drive toward remission while I'm motivated. . . . but check back in 2.5 years and see how recently I've updated my stats (and if I'm still posting).

Getting on from a year after making lots of changes to my diet and exercise, I still have my high morning blood sugar levels - between 7 and 8, and very occasionally up to 8.5.

What should I be doing as regards breakfast - what's 'best practice'? The blood sugar level seems to drift down over the course of the morning both when I have a low-carb breakfast and when I have no breakfast. I've not tested this systematically for a while, but wonder if I'd be doing better to cut out breakfast (apart from the coffee!). Does anyone know?

Have you heard of the saying, to eat like a king for breakfast, eat like a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner?

Yes ... but I think the truth is that it doesn't suit everyone. I'm one of those people who start the day almost feeling queezy and unable to stomach much. So for me, not eating breakfast at all could be feasable - but I want to know about how this might work with the blood sugar levels for people with the high morning ones.

No not what you were thinking ..... I hear there is such a things as a liver dump whereby your liver dumps glucose into your system first thing in the morning to give you the boost for waking up.

How does this work for Diabetes 2. Should you be waking up with raised glucose levels e.g. 9 and treat it as normal or should it be treated as abnormal.

I mentioned to the doctor and was a bit perplexed when he seemed to think this was not a norm.

And why doesn't this have a morning level for type 2?

I was told by my specialist nurse it's called the 'Dawn Effect' when I asked why my sugars were higher when I got up with no food than they were after my breakfast. It's there to help you get up. Perfect explanation for me

But am I not right in thinking that if possible, I want the level to come down sooner rather than later in the morning?

If I dont eat on wake up the level seems to go up . Boiled egg strip of bacon and coffee and 2 hours later it's down to 6ish. Rest of day normal. Everybody says just exercise . Fast. Etc. But when I try a walk or run in am with no food it goes as high as 8.5 or 9!! Someone said that can't happen that exercise drops but not always for me. I'd love some input advice since only my morning levels are higher

Hi I was actually coming to post about this so thought I'd jump in on this thread. I am trying to go over to a low carb diet and last night I was really good and had courgetti (first from my garden :) ) with some chicken breast, garlic and onion - it was delicious and I was pumped to see my fasting this morning and was gutted to see it at 6.9 (I'm usually low 6 on average I'd say with dinner containing carbs). Any ideas?

Despite hearing other people have similar problems, I'm pleased to hear I'm not alone! When they sent me off on the diabetes-education course when I was diagnosed T2 last year, I came away with the impression that if I persisted with the low-carb diet, it would sort itself out! I've experimented with almost zero carbs after lunch the preceding day to having porridge at bedtime and it seems to make no difference. (Not that I often do the porridge-at-bedtime.) I've read about and experimented with the red wine at bed-time, and that also seems to make no difference. Whatever I do, occasionally, it's lower, but mostly it's 7-point-something when I get up.

Okay the dreaded "Dawn Thingy" cant spell phenomenon!
Has anybody identified a suitable timing delay to test after waking that will negate the effect of DP? I just wondered if perhaps some brave soul had tested say - on waking, +30 minute, +60 minutes, +90 minutes etc.?
I test each morning and typically get in the 6.0 to 7.0 range, however last December / January I had several weeks of results in the 5s area. I keep a daily log of what I eat and drink, I don't actually count the carbs.
I compared the records with current and earlier times. My level of exercise and the typical menus are not dramatically different, I don't recall being unusually healthy or unwell over these periods. My last three HbA1c results were 47, 46 and 48, however what I did do, was reduce the quantity of carbs eaten at each meal . I did lose a stone in weight (about 6.3kg in new money)
I did try the Okra thing but after a while gave it up as the ongoing improvement was negligible. So where am I now? well I haven't returned to the same low level of carbs but I certainly pay more attention now (processed foods are the sneaky ones) and my weight has gone back up a bit but I can still get in the 32 waist trousers comfortably.

If you are on metformin, how about trying to take your last metformin for the day as late as possible, just before going to bed or an hour before bed ? It works for me, stops the liver dump, and I get good morning levels.

This isn't an option for me because I'm not on any medication. My last two HbA1c tests were 46 and I'm waiting for the results from the latest test - due any time now. I'm aware that 15 months after my T2 diagnosis, my diet goes up and down in carbs, but overall is getting better - fewer days when I let it go up (I'm just a pig by nature), and my exercise levels have similarly got better over the last year. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the HbA1c results, but whatever they turn out to be, I'll still be left wanting to get the first reading of the day down if it's at all possible.

I have stopped making my own soup as it mainly consisted of below ground vegetables and I was advised upon diagnosis not to eat vegetables that grow below ground. So if your home-made soup was say carrot, onion, potato and lentil based then it was a carb loaded soup and would have increased your blood sugar level. Sorry to be so negative we are all learning and I am no expert as I have still to get to a point where I am happy with my own readings.
I have found Greek Natural Plain Yogurt to be very good at keeping my blood glucose level and this is what I eat every morning for breakfast.
I also have a lot of weight to lose, I have lost some weight but still got a way to go - I have found that the low carb seems to work for me but I am still addicted to carbs and crave them at times, so I can be my own worst enemy.............. still it is a long road and a lot of learning has to take place I feel in order to achieve what we want.

Hope you find your way and manage to lose some weight and improve your overall health.

I'd describe myself in much the same way.
