I've read articles that say sweeteners are bad for diabetics, that you end up with higher sugar levels than if you'd had sugar- what think you?

Hi, I would like the answer to that too, haven't heard that before & I use sweetners & low cal drinks all the time x
 
This article might allay some of your fears.

It concludes,

Probably when consumed in excessive amounts.

I've drank diet drinks/squash since I first developed diabetes 35 years ago and have had no adverse effect from them (or none that I'm aware of).
 
Yes, I think only you can answer that by testing yourself. I drink a fair amount of diet coke and use sweetener in my coffee and don't have a problem.
 
I've recently discovered that I'm sensitive to Aspartame and Acesulfame K - most commonly used in diet soft drinks. They give me heart palpitations, so I had an ECG to confirm there's nothing wrong with my heart. Since cutting out all artificial sweeteners, the problem's gone away. I've also found that my tooth is much less sweet now, so I really don't miss it.

Mind you, I'm fond of a Gin and tonic and have found that Sainsbury's diet tonic, which contains sucralose, is absolutely fine for me. (Huge sigh of relief!)
 
If you are worried just go for the natural ones like Stevia not the artificial ones
