Did anyone else take a back step after the diabetic nurse??

So..this message comes straight from having been to see the "diabetic" nurse...what a total and utter farce! She read off a transcribe that was, of course, old school NHS rubbish and whilst she said it was refreshing to meet someone who had done the research etc etc still the appointment went on, making me feel like I was being obstructive and rude. All it contained was the negatives which as a newly diagnosed (maybe just me) I DO NOT need to hear right now. I've been doing really well, she has just turned a positive day into one that is now filled with grrrrrrrrrrrrr. My partner is trying to be positive with "but you're ahead of the game" which I know I am but I cannot stand people who do not know what they are talking about, apparently being charged with my health. She made me feel like I might as well just put myself in a coffin now and be done with it as all I am facing is certain death, amputation and blindness...yes maybe that is the way my head took it but even still.
I, being a nurse, have always been a lover and steadfast supporter of all things NHS but this....this was just a total waste of my day and I am SO angry. As much as I want the blood tests to see how I am getting on, the rest can go to hell, I don't want to engage with them.
Sorry it's a bit ranty and negative I am just SO angry and upset and things have been so good xx

Hi

I had very similar over the last few years, I was diagnosed 10 years ago and still on diet only and the nurse still tries and pushes to take medication as it is the norm now. Well I have managed it for 10 years why should this change. I get very upset and stop going to see them until I get a letter. They do bring me down but I focus on being positive and know I'm doing the right things.

They treat you by what the rules are at that time not on your history and how you manage it.

Keep going you know yourself better :)

Is there another nurse in the practice you can see?

I have seen the DN once, but am generally seen by my doctor who openly admits I could teach the DN things about diabetes and how to go about dealing with it. Could you just see your GP?

Join the club. Remember though, she is probably a very nice lady. It isn't her fault she is obliged to churn out this stuff.

Yup. This is fairly standard. At my practice, there is one great nurse out of 3, and my doc is a dinosaur.
I am in the process of changing docs.

I can only recall my DSN saying two things to me...

1. Your HbA1c is too low

2. Eat fewer eggs

.....I'm not sure I'll bother going back.

Thanks guys. I am so ashamed that my profession continue to turn out this utter rubbish and promote it to unsuspecting patients, it goes against everything that our code of conduct and morality binds us to do! I am sure she is a lovely lady but that was lost on me, don't have any gripe with her per-say just the system I guess and the absolute logger head I am currently facing. I know you guys are on board it would just be lush to have someone who thinks they know healthcare to on side, face to face if that makes any sense. I'm just disgusted the surgery allow a non specialist to "run" a diabetes clinic. Currently in floods of tears once more because my head has just gone "what's the freaking point in trying" and wanna eat everything that I have cut out and bin the chicken and veg I am currently cooking. Thank you as ever for replying, all of you, I am feeling super deflated, alone and frustrated and angry once more and I planned on not going back to that place! She just made it all sound like too much hard work and as brill as the partner has been he has made me feel like that too and right now giving up and giving in feels like the only option but like hell am I gonna give in to that. xx

I know the "what's the freaking point in trying" feeling far too well and to be honest almost all my contact with the diabetes nurses and consultants has left me frustrated and deflated. Although it has galvanised me to be in control of this myself and not to rely on them for their "expertise". Ironically the best advice, care and treatmemt I got was from a busy A & E nurse who saw to me when first diagnosed, not a specialist by any means but someone who appreciated how much my head was spinning at the time and reassured me no end.

Hi MissMmac

Sorry to hear of your experience and I also find it difficult to understand some attitudes especially in a caring profession. Do we complain, no! It’s the NHS and we think that it was a one-off. My own experience of my Diabetes Team could not be of greater contrast. When I was diagnosed my Nurse came on one of my training runs just to boost my confidence and demonstrate that I could still do the things I enjoyed before diagnosis. I suppose it’s no consolation but we all move on at some stage.

Thank you, it's so awful we have all been experiencing the same. Just been called out by some stuck up eijit on faebook saying that "just" because I have had one bad experience not to judge everyone...calmly told her that I was NOT the only one..I sure hope she doesn't keep going on else I am gonna lose my rag...that's where I am tonight!
In other news dinner was good but one question......can you eat chirozo which I cannot spell on this LCHF? xx

I believe chorizo only averages about 3% carbs (very low). I have just bought a whopper and intend frying it up with some chicken to make a warm salad. Until I cook it I will sleep with it under the bed and use it as protection in case I get burglars

It's funny what being diagnosed does to you. I would never have imagined myself admitting to making a salad 3 months ago :bag:

....I don't use a pillow. I hang from the ceiling to stop my bloomin' feet from hurting all the time! :banghead:

The bed is just there to catch me if I lose my grip during the night.

Hi
I'm a retired Paramedic and I am lucky that the "diabetic nurse " is a total star !! So very sensible and not in the least patronising . I used to feel like shouting at some of the people I worked with!
Keep strong ....

I thought the same about my diabetes nurse. She was lovely to me, gave me a nice glossy booklet all about diabetes and diet, and told me to eat jacket potatoes and baked beans for lunch, wholemeal bread, and no harm in the odd bit of cake or ice cream. I went away feeling ontop of the world as it seemed I could more or less eat what I already was doing. It wasn't until I found this forum and learned all about low carb and testing that I realised she was anything but "a star". Everything she had told me was utter rubbish.

As a Newbie, I'd love to know why the NHS and Diabetes UK publish guidelines on diet that seem to be at odds with current thinking . Most of what I read seems to favour LCHF diet , but DUK and NHS say to eat thing like egg on toast spree with
margarine !
