Rice, no impact?

Treatment type
I do not have diabetes
Last 2 nights I've give LO rice with her tea and both nights she has gone low after tea which I treat appropriately and then her sugars stay pretty much the same overnight, dropping maybe a couple of mmol at best.

What on earth? I thought rice would give a big spike but it seems to not affect her at all!

Might be worth re checking your measurements for the rice just incase you didn't give enough for the insulin you gave her.

Also some carbs act differently from person to person. For me Noodles send me high for an extended period of time before settling down.

Martin

Morning @shivles - rice typically will cause a spike yes, the fact that it isn't would suggest that her levels are already coming down so basal would be my first thought and that her dose needs adjusting or it could also be that her carb insulin ratio for evening meals is too high, can you try a low carb meal and see what her pattern looks like tonight to rule out this possibility ?

I find a moderate portion of rice works fine for me - no spike at all. We all react differently to foods. It also depends on the type of rice youneat - some work better than others.

If she's going too low after, you could add a tiny bit more rice and see how that goes next time (keep the rest of the meal the same so you can judge).

The measurements I'm certain are correct I weigh everything twice on the digital scale :)

Could well be the teatime ratio is off now as we have been tweaking the basal, I might try equal carbs of a different kind to check.

It was 30g dry weight rice which was about 4 tablespoons once cooked, I'm not sure she could physically eat more in a sitting I could give a little less insulin though

Never a dull moment eh?

if I got a pattern like that I'd be looking at the bolus for that meal as I'd assume it was ever so slightly too much.

The only reason I suggested adding a little more rice was that I appreciate its not so easy to make small adjustments to bolus if you're using injections :) If you can try a smaller bolus for the same meal, then that would give you more information on which to base your decision. Or, indeed, try the same carb amount of different carbs, as you suggested :)

Sorry if I seem a bit vague/un scientific on the input.

It could be just how her personal digestive system deals with the carb in the rice? Coupled with "honeymoon"??
Another vauge idea is the cooking "technique" of the rice, possibly removing a fair bit of the starch?

If the latter is the case? I maybe round yours for tea!? Lol.

Keep doing what your doing...

I'm going to try equal amount of carbs from potato instead of rice tonight to see if it's just the rice or she's just dealing better with carbs (had surprisingly good readings for toast this morning!)

It was just regular old boiled long grain rice! I flavoured it with some mixed herbs and cumin but I doubt very much it's that :)

The kid maybe having a couple of (relatively) good panceas funtion days.? (Reference to honeymoon.)
Did you recently start a new batch/cartridge of insulin?

No harm in trying an equal measure in spud!

We're half way through the cartridge so no problems there, could well be her pancreas having a go honeymoon period is such fun lol

She's just gone low again so could well be her bolus rates need adjusting now the basal has been changed

The honeymoon can be both a joy and pain, joy at reduced insulin doses and pain when the pancreas decides to kick in again too - have you thought about getting a libre ? If my daughter had type 1 I would get one, means you can check as much as you want, particularly when they are asleep, but also helps to watch patterns, which means you can monitor food/insulin doses and make adjustments more easily, takes some of the guess work out of it - also will help you watch the after effects of different food types too so you can gauge carb effect on her BG levels.

The team are arranging a trial of a CGM for her but not the libre as it's only licenced for over 4s

So it wasn't just rice, she went low after toast at breakfast and chips at dinner, lunch seemed pretty good. Looks like her bolus might need adjustment I'll call the DSN Monday

The CGM trial would be very useful at this point so again push for this, sorry didn't realise your daughters age. It's getting used to making adjustments as it's an ongoing process to test and watch, you are doing a great job, and yes your DSN will be your best call in making some changes. Hope they can sort a trial out for you soon.

The team called on Friday and said they're getting us a different one as they was going to arrange a libre for us :) will ask about it when I call tomorrow over doses
