Risk of Type 1 Diabetes in children of T1?

Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi there, my husband is an identical twin and has been a type 1 diabetic for ten years. We've been told that his twin brother is high risk but thankfully, so far, he's diabetes free.

As an aside, I've been looking for some statistics but not very successful. How many of you T1s have diabetic children? Do you have any idea how high the risk is and whether boys or girls are more at risk? We have a daughter and two sons and I'm out of my mind with worry. Almost regret having had children. Thank you all.

I have Type 1 and 3 children, none of which have diabetes. I think the risk for children having it is slightly higher if the parent was diagnosed at a very young age.

Type 1 is 20% genetic 80% environmental, my consultant told me - that is, you can have the genes but it needs an environmental cause to trigger them. Most people with the genes don't have Type 1. Even with identical twins, the risk of the other twin getting Type 1 is only 50% even though they're gentically identical.

I think the odds are 1/20 if the child has one parent with T1D; whether those odds increase with both parents having T1 - I don't know.

I wouldn't regret having children at all, you're being a bit hard on yourself there. Try not to worry, there's always someone worse off:)

There may also be different statistics depending on whether the Mother or Father has Type 1.

And I think if the Mother has Type 1 the chance may be greater, but don't quote me...;)

I have 2 and my brother has 5, we are both Type 1 and so far so good......touch wood!!!!!

I think t1 in the mum carries higher risk? Also I read risk was increased if diagnosed before 10 years old, the thing I read suggested a 1 in 17 chance in our situation (dad diagnosed at 10 months) and our first has t1.

It wouldn't stop me having children or regretting them, it's not a death sentence, treatment has come a long way

The risk is actually slightly higher if the father has Type 1. But there are plenty of Type 1 fathers whose children don't have diabetes.

I am type 1 since 6 years old now 48 with 1 child aged 16 NOT diabetic.
My sister type 1 since 3 years old now 52 with 1 child aged 21 NOT diabetic.
My other sister is 50 and is NOT diabetic with 2 early 20s children also NOT diabetic.
My dad has developed type 2 in later years and my mum is Not diabetic. Both in their 70s now.

When my son was aged 6 i did an odd blood test on him and have always taken him to the opticians and yes i did worry and still do but i have done what any sensible parent should do and try to encourage sensible eating and exercise.
If a non diabetic child is overweight then they run that risk of diabetes but if its in your genes as well then the risk becomes greater.
This is only MY belief as medical evidence doesn't always support my belief and the last thing i would want to do is make you worry more than you do already.

Please note the above......
2 NON diabetic parents end up with 3 children 2 of which are type 1.
The 2 children with type 1 (1 male 1 female) now adults have 2 children of there own neither of which is diabetic and have almost reached adulthood.

I hope this helps.

Regards
Tony

My father passed his diabeties to me and because of it I wont have children. My choice im sure you will say but I'm lucky my partner is health and willing to carry.

reaching adulthood is irrelivent as they can still be diagnosed with T1..

If the mother is type 1 diabetic, there is a 1-4% chance the child will be type 1. If the father is type 1 diabetic there is a 4-8% chance the child will have type 1 diabetes. This is the same for each child you have, first child, second child, third child, the chance with each pregnancy is the same.

Can't say as I blame you, with the double whammy of coeliac as well. It's a very personal choice to make and one that only the person concerned can make. I always knew I never wanted to pass on my screwed-up genetics, so I totally get it :)

Yes i do know that however where i was coming from is as a parent we can influence our children but that influence has lesser effect as they reach adulthood.

Thanks Indy, I feel like a complete freak as all my friends are procreating and I swear my partner would mate with herself if she could! The fact is I have very few completely working body systems *touch wood* the ones that are ok need to stay that way!

Well, I don't think you're a freak - it's a perfectly rational choice (but then, I would say that, wouldn't I?) :D

Please don't knock yourself eng88 i too have coeliacs and been type 1 for 42 years and have a range of other things amiss and whilst my head sometimes feels skewed i'm doing ok and would never refer to you or anyone else a freak!

Sending you kind regards and pleasantness aplenty

Tony

Don't ever regret having children, they are one of life's precious gifts and bring so much joy to our lives.

Although there's a slight risk I wouldn't stress about it too much @pepprina78 , my children are in their 20's and are healthy and don't have diabetes.
