Digging through the Agenda of Diabetes Professional Care 2016, I came across the following session being presented on Thursday. Maybe @Administrator will be in attendance....

It's certainly a change of direction given attitudes at last year's conference!

The role of Ketosis in the management of diabetes
  • Ketosis occurs when there is more glucagon than insulin, and the body starts to seek out alternative sources of fuel to glucose
  • It used to be considered as a harmful consequence of inadequate diabetes control, sparked predominantly by the fear of the potentially fatal "Diabetic keto-acidosis"
  • Current evidence suggests however, that a mild degree of ketosis are not only not harmful, but may be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes at least
  • We will review the mechanisms of ketone production, the potential for benefit of a mild degree of ketosis and the importance of monitoring this ketosis in the case of ill health

That'll be really interesting, will the session be on YouTube for people to see/hear? I'd love to hear their thoughts. We receive only negative comments from our diabetic team regarding our low carbing and daughter being in ketosis, it'd be great to present them with some positive evidence in our favour!

From what I can garner, the session is mostly talking about T2, and I've not seen anything to say it is available on line.

I've just had a look at the website, there are going to be some really interesting talks. It'd be great if the sessions were recorded and available to download, but I can't see anything suggesting they will be, which is a shame.

It seems to be free registration, so if you don't tell them you are a patient, I suspect you can get away with registering as something else. I know there is Pharma money involved this time though so they will be a bit careful regarding patients/general public turning up.

One of the listed event sponsors is Diabetes.co,uk. Other sponsors seem to be fairly benign, mainly technology firms such as Abbott, not Big Pharma.

I have contacted them to inquire if any data will become available following the event.

I have had a reply from Dr David Strain who is presenting on Thursday, and his interest is ketosis in relation to medicine, not through diet, and is aimed at T1D mainly. He has offered to send me a copy of the presentsion on Friday, and is aware that I intend to share it on this site. His sense of humour is similar to mine, which is refreshing. He is aware of LCHF but will not be presenting on it.

This year the DUK presence is much more muted than it has been previously, possibly because they see that this conference might be considered to be a competitor to their March one.

Today is likely to be quite an interesting day at the Conference (unfortunately not one I can attend, sadly). Whilst it's ending on this topic, there is also the Live debate, and once again it is focusing on the Low Carb discussion. Apparently, Drs Unwin and Legg are representing the low carb approach. From what I understand, talking to people, they've found it much harder this year to pull together a "Low Fat" defence team, with both DUK and an industry body refusing to take that side.

There was also much more presence from Low Carb friendly groups in the village, and I'm going to give a shout out to the Natural Low Carb store who were giving away (very successfully) their delicious snacks (of which I probably partook of a few too many!

One thing is clear and that is that the low carb message is starting to resonate more widely

DUK is muted here since one of the co sponsors is DCUK

Not quite @Oldvatr - they are described as a partner, not a sponsor, which I suspect has rather different financial requirements.
Sorry, the website wasn't clear, but yes, they are in fact event partners. Still a good enough reason why DUK not wanting to be there.

Trying to make sense of some of the above..... DCUK is this website and DUK is Diabetes UK, have I got that right?

And am I inferring correctly that DCUK and DUK don't like one another very much?

That is the correct interpretation,

It is however, the persons such as myself posting on this forum who express any discontent that you may have detected. IMHO DCUK does not express their opinion either way. The same seems to be true true of DUK where the comments in their forum are made by their members. Having been on both forums, I have never seen any formal view put forward by either body in regard to this.

Having said that, I have seen Moderators express negative views, but they are not part of their organisation, and are expressing a personal POV,

Speaking as an outsider, I'm not sure there's really "liking" involved. It's more a case that DCUK has taken a different approach to diabetes management from DUK, and as a result they are perceived by users/members very differently. I personally struggle with some of the advice that DUK gives, and the best way we can change that is infiltrate and assimilate.... ;)

I've had T2 for over 18 years, and became a life member of DUK soon after diagnosis. I think it's fair to say they are the more recognised organisation offering advice on diabetes in the U.K., and of course they also fund research. Because of their reach, I think it's really important that DUK's insistence on lowering fat and basing all meals on starchy carbohydrates be challenged.

One thing I haven't got my head round is what the status of DCUK is. Is it a charity? It appears to have staff.... who pays them? I have had a poke around the website, but can't find answers to these questions.
