I have a number of health issues apart from T2 diabetes, hiatus hernia and fatty liver. I have liver functions blood tests every 6 months and they come back ok but I can't help worrying about it. I have a lot of weight to lose and hope to make 2017 the year I get my health back. I get a discomfort under my right rib which is constant. The GP doesn't seem to be worried as much as I am. What shall I do? What do others with fatty liver do to improve things?

The aim of the Newcastle Diet and / or the Michael Mosley Blood Sugar Diet is to reduce the fat in the liver and pancreas and they great for weight loss. The Newcastle Diet is done with meal replacement drinks and some veg whereas the Blood Sugar Diet is real food.

Hi peeps I'm new to the forum but have been diabetic for 15 yrs I am also overweight have a fatty liver and a five and a half cm hiatus hernia but I am following the low carb diet with great results I use to suffer with the right side pain my gp said it was inflammation of my liver but touch wood I've been fine since sticking to the diet and losing some timber

If your tests are okay, it really may be obesity that's causing all sorts of aches and pains. I was diagnosed with asthma which miraculously went away once I lost 4 stone. LCHF really does work but keep an eye on everything and nag your doc relentlessly if you're really worried. You're not imagining it, you really do have something to consider and can sort it. :)

The Newcastle diet specifically targets internal fat.

Hi. The way forward is to try to reduce weight thru low-carbing. Have you set yourself a daily carb limit? Go for 150gm/day or similar to start with and even less if you can to force the body into ketosis (fat-burning).

Hello. I am not a doctor (well, not the medical kind), so I am definitely not qualified to say this, but has your GP mentioned gallstones? It's just that pain under the right rib is a typical symptom.

I used to have NAFLD, based on blood test results. A low carb high fat diet seems to have cured it in a few months.
My ALT went from 62 to 27 IU/L in 6 months. It was 19 when last measured in October 2016.

I followed this initially and it worked really well: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb

These are the lab tests with respect to NAFLD, according to one doctor:

Eating a low carb diet targets fat, so you don't lose muscle, and from my own experience, with a really solid mid section, it took only weeks before I needed a size smaller bra, and my waist is still shrinking, plus I can bend and turn far more easily as my middle is soft and compressible.
I used to get dreadful pain under my ribs on the right side, which I am pretty sure was gallstones. After being on a 'healthy' low fat diet my gall bladder was unused, so I was lucky to be able to get rid of the stones - though the pain was not pleasant, once I returned to eating properly.
I went straight into low carb eating when I was diagnosed, though it took persistence to change to ketosis, now I am losing weight at a steady rate and having to replace all the rest of my clothes, particularly trousers and skirts.

I don't have gallstones when I had a scan about a year ago but they did find a cyst on my liver and fatty liver so it could be this that's giving me discomfort. Am going for the meal replacement drinks (just for my evening meals) and see whether that improves things.

I am already low carbing and I actually don't reach the RDA of 150gms, it's much lower than that. To speed up my weight loss (I am very slow at losing weight) I am going to try Almased meal replacement shakes as they are suitable for diabetics. I also have the Dr Michael Mosely 8 week blood sugar diet book and recipe book and there are some very easy, tasty looking low carb recipes. Ideally, I want to have 2 days a week where I stick to 800 cals (as it states in the book) and those days use my Almased meal replacement for my evening meal.

I am determined to do this as I want to regain my health back in 2017.

Thanks all for your replies.

I'm at the end of my second week of doing the 800 calories Blood Sugar Diet and so far I've lost 4 inches from my waist and 9 pounds. The recipe book has been great - we have had some lovely meals that you could never guess were 'diet'.

Low carbing is usually considered to start at 130 g or below, but some people need to go WAY lower than that to experience the benefits.

Are you doing the 5:2 on 800 calories for two days a week or are you doing the 8 week, 800 cals a day?

Here is a breakdown on the strawberry shake (in the product details dropdown)

At 17 carbs per shake it would be too high for me but good luck and let us know how you get on

I have done the older version of 5:2 (when you ate relatively normally on 5 days and 500 calories on two days) it was okay-ish but I actually preferred fasting. This time I'm doing the 8 weeks on 800 calls per day BUT on most days I'm fasting until dinner then having one big meal. It suits me better and (apart from a new dog) I'm sleeping okay which is always the deal maker or breaker for me. I hate going to bed hungry.

Ouch! I couldn't manage that amount of carbs in just one meal! I'd be starving all the time.

@carina62 I forgot to mention, I'm trying to keep to 20g of carbs each day (so combining low carb and low calorie) because I very rarely feel hungry when I'm low carbing - occasionally I've had a few more carbs but not many.
