So I've now been taking Metformin once a day for two weeks, just realised today I should have increased to two tablets daily as of last Friday. Oops! So reading the initial info I was given I can see that after a further two weeks I then increase to 3 tablets and then to four daily. At the moment my blood glucose levels are good, ranging anywhere between 4.1 and 8 depending on before or after meals. So my question is, what benefits will increasing my tablets give me?

Also, I've adopted the LCHF diet and so far my weight has been creeping up! Not what I was expecting as I need to lose three stone! I've started exercising on a treadmill daily which I'm hoping will help. Did anyone else find their weight increased initially? I'm worried I'm eating the wrong things?

Typical day would consist of no breakfast as I can't stomach it first thing, then lunch of homemade butternut squash and red pepper soup with half a high protein roll from Lidls. Evening meal either fish or chicken, roasted butternut, salad, mayonnaise, then sugar free jelly with double cream. Is there anything here that's not good I'm not aware of?

Any help gratefully received, thank you.

You could try eliminating the squash but other than that your diet is quite low carb. Metformin does not work directly on blood sugar, it works in the liver to slow down liver dumps. If you tolerate it, it is a safe drug and does help a lot of people.

Side effects from Metformin are fairly common and if you are going to get any then this may happen shortly after an increase of dose. Many people take them without any trouble but quite a large number get loss of appetite, funny taste in the mouth or stomach problems. If anything like that happens then tell your DN/GP at the earliest opportunity.

Personally I found that food started to taste like burnt plastic. I had my dose reduced.

Hi
For 4 years now, I've had a slimfast for breakfast and lunch and then a healthy dinner. I don't have anything at all between meals and I'm in a wheelchair.
I initially lost 12kgs in 2 years and went down a few dress sizes. I was upset that I'd only lost 12kgs but when I thought about it, I realised that I hadn't put on weight. I'm the sort that looks at a cream cake and I've put 2pounds on!
I have a dessert, small to normal portion after dinner. That's my treat and for me it seems to be working.
So not eating anything between meals really does work. Don't know if it might help you, good luck anyway

Your typical days menu is absolutely fine except perhaps the butternut. Those Lidl rolls are wonderful, aren't they! Stuffed full of fibre and very low carb at around 4 or 5g carbs per half.

Nanny_B I would advocate scrutinising and measuring your carb intake and try to keep as low as realistically possible to see how you get on. Less than 40g per day might be something to try for and see how you get on? I started by buying myself the Pocket Counter book which surprised me no-end how much carb content there is in what I thought was a healthy diet. I also watch calories and personally try to keep at under 1500 per day whilst trying hard to get as much power-walking exercise before work.
Gimmicky I know but I got a FitBit watch for Christmas and it has really helped me keep my focus on exercise and calorie burn. I'm now down to one Metformin per day having been at three in late October and blood sugars are holding within range and weight still dropping like a stone.
Focus like a demon - convince yourself you can beat this thing! :-)
