Hi
Have you tried the Lindt 99% dark chocolate? I like it, but it's the same price as the 90% and you only get half as much. For that reason, I have one 10g square of the 90% in the morning with my coffee and another in the afternoon.
Yes I have the 99% it is less bitter than Lidl's 95% but as you say, very expensive.

Daisey,
Thanks for the input
Not wishing to bore or put my problems on others but:-
Had a Hypo last night, Blood Sugar 3.2
Had a Mars bar to correct situation
Before bed Blood Sugar increased to 6.1
On waking Blood Sugar 7.1, I always get this dump
Breakfast : Fried Egg/Bacon/Tomato/Mushroom/Black Pudding/Black Coffee
2 Hours later Blood Sugar 9.7
So why the increase with food with no sugar?

Good morning@johnoo,it's a learning curve...what even most so called specialist's still fail to understand is that All CARBOHYDRATES TURN TO GLUCOSE...that is why it's so Important to get our consumption of carbs down...most ii posters eat no more than 50 grams a day ( myself included) as has been said before this illness will cause nasty things like neuropathy heart attack, macular neuropathy.....we need to be aware of our enemy( diabetes) and take action while we can,try to imagine that our "BLOOD" is a serious invalid and treat it with very carefully k,selected foods that do not cause spikes of more than 2 mmoles the info that daisy 1 supplied is very accurate,we all learn from one another, just a suggestion next time you go hypo...eat an apple or couple of biscuits...a mars bar would send me too high! Keep posting, let us know how your doing, the high figures in the morning is the bodys way of giving you the usual dump of glucose ready for your day ahead...but in our case as were diabetic it''s party excreting the excess glucose from our livers and it took me 7 months for my liver to get rid of the excess and my bs am fasting stabilised at around 4.5 mmols

Forgot to say, I did 30 minutes of light exercise after Breakfast
Did this aid the increase?

@johnoo, exercise is good for tackling insulin resistance in the longer term. I find that a 30 minute walk will reduce my blood sugars, but if I go for a 30 minute run, they will go up, and by quite a bit. Try not to get hung up on an individual reading. Try to stop eating sugar, sweeteners, bread, beer, Pasta, Potato, Rice and reduce below ground veggies. Take your readings before meals, and 2 hours after first bite, collect a few weeks data, dump it to a spreadsheet and have a look at the TREND. If the trend is downwards, you are on the right path. There will almost certainly be some highs and lows, it matters not if the trend is downward.

It could well have done. Record your levels, and make notes of what you do between eating and testing. Patterns will emerge.

On your medication you do need to be very careful if you follow a low carb diet. The lower carbs, the less insulin you need to cope with them. Your medication works by forcing your pancreas to produce extra insulin, and this is what causes hypos. You need to test very regularly.

It is wise to have a chat with your doctor/nurse about the possibility of reducing your dose of Gliclazide if you intend to continue with low carb..

I've come up with a bit of a plan, any comments welcome
1 I'm going to do 30 minutes exercise daily in the morning to supplement my two afternoons of Table Tennis
2 I will carry out Blood/Sugar Testing every 3 days, trying to note trends of results before & after meals.
3 I will reduce meal sizes
4 I will not eat chocolate!
4 Diet:-
Breakfast :- Will alternate from "Fry Up" (Had Bacon/Egg/Tomato/Mushrooms/Black Pudding) today with Kippers & Two Eggs & on third day Omelette.Plus Black Coffee with sweetener
Lunch:- Will alternate Meats & Salad (had Corned beef & salad today) with Yogurt & Berries.
Supper :- Will alternate cooked meats & Salad with Fish & Salad (had Trout & Salad + Olive oil & Vinegar tonight)
5 Wine:- Very undecided on what to drink
Note 2 hours after tonight's meal Blood/Sugar was 4.8, low for me but not rushing for the biscuit tin, am I right about this?
Hope this is not boring people as I just need reassurance & help

@johnoo each to their own, but nothing looks out of place in that list. I would test 3 times a day rather than once every 3 days.
4.8 is great, only you know what too low is

Hi there. Thats a lot of salad which is fine but you may get sick of salad. Broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, green beans, cabbage, brussel sprouts, courgettes, asparagus and other above ground growing veggies are good and better with some butter or cheese on them. Mix up the veggies for variety and it is more sustainable and less boring. Also avocado and olives are very good on LCHF.

Wine - any red or dry white is fine.

I would also cut down on the salads and eat veggies with butter on. Don't forget mushrooms fried in butter, cherry toms with a salad, use real mayo on salads or olive oil, and don't forget cooked or raw tomato, and oily fish..

@johnoo your plan looks really good for a starting point. The vegetables with butter suggestion is a good one too. I hope you keep posting to let us know how it's going :)

With the medication you are on your should test often, and consult your doctor regularly with your numbers if they are getting low - low carb eating is so efficient at lowering blood glucose it might push it too low when combined with some of the tablets you are taking.

Depending on your portion size and whether you are doing low carb or no carb, 100g of an average supermarket black pudding has around 20g of carbs including about 3g added sugar. There is also about 2g of natural sugar in each average tomato and the same in 100g mushrooms, so it's possible that your breakfast fry up could contain about 25g of carbs including about 7g or more of sugar, depending on how many tomatoes you have, which may explain the spike. Try a fry up without the black pudding and/or tomato and then test yourself 2 hours later to see if there is a difference. My breakfast, if I have one, is usually just scrambled eggs and a couple of slices of well done bacon.

Thanks, the other trend that I've noted & I think strange is that since I've ceased having fruit for lunch & no potatoes in the evening my B. Sugar has been lower 2 hours after meals than 2 hours before meals.
Any ideas why?
Examples:-
8.6 7.9
6.8 3.8
7.2 4.0

Anyway press on & look for improvements

It could be your Gliclazide dose is too high, making you drop very quickly from what is, in fact, quite a high starting point. It isn't unusual to be lower at the 2 hour mark, but it is unusual to drop by so much (on the last pair of readings) The Gliclazide works by forcing your pancreas to produce extra insulin, and it is a possibility that now you are low carb you don't need this extra insulin. You do need to be careful you don't hypo, and maybe it is time to visit your nurse and have a discussion about your medication.

Bluetit,
Many thanks, at lunch today, bore meal BS was 6.8, after 3.8 so think you are correct.
Will get a couple of weeks readings then see the nurse.

Please test regularly after the 2 hour mark until you flatten out and stabilise. You are very close to hypo land.

B.Tit, question, do you think BS should go up before having any more food, or best to have Biscuit now?

I can't answer that, but if you don't feel weird you are probably OK. Just test again and again, frequently. If it keeps going down, eat your biscuit.

I really think you should book an appointment sooner rather than later. No point in waiting. You have some figures and will have more by the time you see her.
