I've been low carbing for a couple of years now and got through the bad breath, I think.... yet my my tongue recently has been feeling slightly out of sorts... as if it is sandpaper and my mouth, like I've been sucking a pickled onion...
I don't have a device for measuring my ketones.... and am wondering if mouth and low carb are related.

Cheers

Snap. The sandpaper bit, not the pickled onion bit. I don't measure ketones either. I've never felt the need or seen the point, but I am low carb about 30g a day, some days a lot less, other days a bit more.

Have you found any research or blogs about this? All I know is that it is very annoying and I start worrying it is something sinister. I'm just bumping it up in case there are others that can answer.

I had a tongue that felt like sandpaper prior to diagnosis. Whether that was down to severe dehydration or the ketones, I don't know. I did present with DKA so there were certainly ketones in my blood.

could it be Anaemia perniciosa because then the tongue get red and more like rasberry-like.... (lack of vitamin b12)
do you take metformin then it is more likely...
could maybe also be other kind of vitamin B deficiencies as bread is one of the big sources of vitamin B´s

or a fungal infection in mouth... I had that once when ill at hospital.(and also when I tried to learn how to smoke a pibe, which I then gave up ).. then one can get pills against it...

Thank you for posting this. I wondered why my tongue was redder than usual. I think you have given me the answer. :) B12 again then

Thanks for doing this @Bluetit1802 I've not come across anything yet. It's just been going on for sometime and I thought I would ping a post to the Forum to see if anyone else had something similar.

One of my problem is my powers of descriptive english are not very strong.... sandpaper and a slight metallic feeling as if I've rinsed out after the dentist.... but all the time, even after a wide range of foods...

Mine comes and goes after a few day but comes back again another day. Just a sandpaper feeling, not discoloured in any way, and my gums are fine. My mouth also isn't dry except when I first wake up, and I definitely am not dehydrated.

Mine has been sore after two weeks on the LCHF - I assumed it was due to having a cold and mouth breathing - shall watch this thread

Are you taking any supplements? I notice a metallic taste when I have had enough magnesium supplement.

I do but haven't taken any supplements at all, meat, loads of veg/salad and cheese and eggs.

I believe high folate levels can cause metallic taste - I have high folate level and a horrible metallic taste - Yuck!!!
Also, low Vit B12 symptoms include sore, swollen tongue

Metformin is known to compromise the absorption of Vit B12 in many, so I've recently discovered. Also, PPIs and acid reducing meds, ie Ranitidine, might also compromises absorption so best to get your B12, folates and ferritin levels checked.

I've recently been researching all this as my B12 is very low/out of range and Folates high/out of range - but my GP seems to think no action is required :( I'm in the process of writing to him to ask him to consider further investigations and B12 injections, a referal to Haematology (as per NICE guidelines) The outcome might be interesitng!!!! ;)

Thanks @Energize but none of those are applicable to me. I don't take Metformin, and my B12, Vit D, iron, folate and ferritin levels were checked in December as part of my normal diabetic checks and were all bang in the middle of the range. All other markers also bang in the middle.

It's a mystery!
