Hello everyone.
I'm seventeen years old and the last time I measured my blood sugar it was something like 4.8 I think.I had a grandmother with type 2 and my dad is pre-diabetes I think.I'm not overweight and my BMI is about 22.would you do me a favour and tell me what to do to reduce my chance for getting diabetes?
Thank you in advance.

Hello @Nima18336 - Welcome to the forum ;)

Sadly no one here is able to give you this information, we are not medically equipped to do so, I would encourage you if you have concerns to see your GP and discuss your concerns with them, the fact you have posted on a forum would lead me to think that this is causing you some stress so your GP would be best placed to look after you under the circumstances :)

Welcome to the forum, @Nima18336 . Firstly can I emphasise that 4.8 is a very good, normal blood sugar reading, so it gives no reason for concern.
In my view, everyone should be aware that type 2 diabetes is a possibility and the very best way you can cut down your chances are to limit your sugar intake. Try to make colas and other sugary drinks an occasional treat, same for cakes, candy and biscuits. Don't add sugar to things. Read labels on foods, you would be surprised how much sugar is added to things that you just wouldn't expect.
Can I wish you a long and healthy life!
Sally

Yeah you are right.I'm a little stressed about it well not a little more than that.

Your blood sugar is perfect :)

Remember we all have relatives with various medical conditions, but that doesn't mean you're going to get those conditions too. Your blood sugar is normal, your BMI is normal - and you're 17 :)

Please don't be. Type 2 diabetes is quite common so many people will have someone in their family with it. It doesnt mean that we'll all get it.

When was your dad diagnosed with prediabetes? Is that what's making you stressed about it?

If you like, you could tell us a little bit more about how your Dad was diagnosed, and if his weight and lifestyle might have been at least partly responsible.

If it is any reassurance I have T2 but my brother does not, so it not guaranteed by any means.

Oh sure.his fast blood sugar was about 6.7.but I wonder why the doctor didn't tell him to change his diet or do anything special.he also had a surgery about couple of weeks ago on his heart.

However 6.7 for fbs is considered as diabetes.
No, it isn't.... It falls into the Prediabetic range in all countries. Above 7.0 is considered a diagnosis.

It used to be 7.7 until the goalposts were moved...

6.7 is prediabetes.

Perhaps the doctor is just going to monitor your dad for the meanwhile? is your dad concerned about his diagnosis? Does he have a follow up appointment?

As he's recently had surgery, maybe that's something the doctor is bearing in mind too.

No I don't think he is going to see the doctor.I even told him and he was like it's not anything serious.what do I do?

You could ask him what the doctor said about that result - eg did the doctor say it was the stress of his recent operation? Did the doctor say it was connected with his medication?

Although 6.7 is in the prediabetic range for fasting blood sugar, it's not horribly high or immediately dangerous. As your dad recovers from his operation, it could well improve as he gets healthier.

If you're concerned about your dad, then tell him so. Even if he says it's ok, explain that it's still worrying you and then your dad can put your mind at rest :)

I'm too shy but I may try.I'm very happy about meeting such supportive and nice people here.

Choose a good time when you're both relaxed and maybe ask some general questions to,start with - like how he's feeling, etc - then you can casually move on to the blood glucose test result. If your dad acts like its no big deal, just say you're a bit worried and wonder if he has to do anything about it or if it will be checked again.

I'm sure your dad wouldn't want you to be worrying.
