Is there a link between T1D and digestion problems?

I Googled celiac disease and the questionnaire had about every possible symptom there is, including "short stature" lol. All I can tell you is when the microvillae in the duodenal part of the intestine go bye bye you can't absorb some nutrients (like fats) and you generally have loose foul smelling poop, and are apt to lose weight. My niece who got it happens to have a twin sister (who didn't have it) and she looked like a Biafran baby compared to her. The GI specialist took one look at her and said "she's got celiac". What they did was an EGD to look at the lining of the intestine. But if you have the disease it doesn't come and go until you quit gluten. She got back to normal pretty fast too.

How about dairy?? It's known to cause upset. One way or the other.
I can eat small bites of cheese occasionally but soft more liquid dairy and my tummy starts rumbling in a matter of minutes. Things like cram, cream cheese, sour cream, milk and cottage cheese.

i also did a online test for gluten intolerance and met most of the criteria (depression, constipation, anxiety, stomach cramps, weakness of body, balance problems), but blood tests come back clean, must be my high sugar and/or ketones maintained at high levels for long periods of time

Hello again
My understanding of coeliac diagnosis in adults is blood test first then a biopsy using a small camera down ones throat.
Any other test is not 100% accurate and as diabetics we need 100% accuracy.

Kindest regards

Tony

Not always - the symptoms are so wide spread you wouldn't believe, I know because I have it. It can cause anything from skin issues (dry flakey/itchy) digestion (constipated or d, also weight loss or gain due to body retention of anything it can absorb) mental health (anxiety, depression) tiredness, the list goes on. If I had my way it would be tested for like vaccines are given out as only 25% of those with it are diagnosed.

FYI I was asymptomatic when diagnosed, only picked up through my inclusion in a clinical trial looking at the link between D and C. yeah :/ massive link.
Sorry, I tried to press agree but got funny instead!

Hi @Tony337, thanks for all the information. I have been to see my diabetic nurse today and they think I should be tested for coeliacs. Better to know one way or the other I suppose.

Hi Beth
By adding "i suppose" on the end of the above tells me you are a little concerned at being a coeliac on top of type 1 diabetes?
I suffered with bad guts for so long that to have a settled stomach for longer than a day is worth its weight in gold.
There is way more choice of foods available out there and its far easier to work out for yourself what has wheat in it because of the way manufacturers list ingredients on their packages.
There are other bits and bobs to point out but i don't want to bore you!
So don't despair, if it is coeliacs disease its manageable.

Please keeps us informed and i wish you the best of luck.
Tony

Hi
I have also suffered with very similar problems to you and have been tested coeliacs and told it was not that. My doctor believes it is autonomic neuropathy and there is no test for it. I keep it nearly under control with immodium type products and alpha lipoic acid supplement and try very hard to keep my bs levels below 8. It is a very tiring and taxing thing to have so I wish you luck.

Hi Katrina

I am sorry to hear you also suffer like me. I've been referred to the Gastroenterologist for further investigation so I hope I get answers as to what's causing it. I haven't been T1D for very long so nurse seems to think it couldn't be complications of diabetes as its too early for those to appear. She did think it could be Coeliacs though. Apparently I had a TTG test before (maybe year ago) and no antibodies were present. Is Coeliacs something that develops over time? As my symptoms have become increasingly worse.

Would welcome any information.

@HoneyBea So have you had a recent coeliac blood test? My consultant asks for annual coeliac blood tests to make sure I havent developed it.

Are you keeping a food/symptoms diary too ( for general info not coeliac)?

Hi @azure, thanks for replying. Not had another test recently. I've kept a diary of what I eat for info and there doesn't seem to be any pattern, I seem to have the diarrhoea with pretty much everything I eat! I've been told not to cut gluten out of my diet until I've been tested and have it confirmed as Coeliacs otherwise it makes testing difficult. I also eat gluten as part of almost all my meals.

Just want to get it sorted as its really getting me down

Hi HoneyBea,
I was diagnosed in August last year and suffered from diarrhoea from the word go - I had an operation for an infected insect bite and came round to find a large wound on my back and a T1 diagnosis. For the first few months they kept saying it was the antibiotics. I also had a negative coeliac blood test so tried a gluten free diet - no change. The last time I went to the doctors I asked about automonic neuropathy and was told that it was probably that. I have been prescribed immodium tablets and take them every 5 hours as well as Alpha lipoic acid tablets and try had to keep my bg levels below 8. This has helped and whilst not perfect is better. I understand how it can get you down.
