Diet Doctor Low Carb Challenge

Went to bed on 4.6 and FBG this morning was 5.9. Surely my liver has got to run out of stored glycogen soon??

remember that the body can generate glucose out of even fats, if necessary, so if it wants to, it can scavenge stores for its glycogen from any food at all, no matter how low carb it is.

So I don't think it is a case of starving it of ALL glucose, but rather keeping blood glucose steady enough that it relaxes its panicked belief that it needs to hold huge reserves.

I feel a bit sorry for our livers. They took years to learn that we stuff carbs, and expect them to hold the bursting glycogen bag for an emergency - and then we have pseudo emergencies every d*mn morning, so it learns to dump bigtime. But then we suddenly change our minds and blame it for something it learned to do to help us - AND we want it to change a modus operandi that took years to establish... poor thing. It must be VERY confusing! :D

I've found that what I have for dinner and any evening snacks affect my FBG - which is depressing but hopefully my liver 's glycogen reserves will empty soon. I'm finding that protein at dinner is also affecting my FBG.

That menu is gorgeous! I think I'd have the duck :). Let us know what you chose to have.

Between the roulade and the sea bream (without the aniseed grapes - yuk!)

Cheeseboard for pudding (£9 for choice of two cheeses, £12 for choice of three!) and olives to start

Oh no, a stroppy, confused, dim liver - that's all I need. :) ;)

I didn't know it could make glycogen out of fat. :banghead:

The thing that confuses (and annoys) me is how stable my FBG was when I first got my BG a down to good numbers when I first started low carbing. They were in the low 5s every morning. It is only since I eased up on that initial (unsustainable) keto + very low calorie way of eating after the accident at work that my FBG went up and up - far more so than my BG for the rest of the day. But now I'm doing almost the same regime I thought it would be a bit more stable but it seems to have a mind of its own.

Wonder what they do to the grapes to make them aniseed?

Sounds delicious - but expensive (especially the cheese board).

I bet the difference is just the amount of exercise you were taking back then.
I mean, you were dog walking a lot, weren't you? And that probably means you were burning glucose in your muscles, and you had more muscle too.

We get a lot of posts from people saying how easy glucose control is for them, and then it turns out they are gym bunnies, or runners. Which is great, and a FANTASTIC way to control diabetes, but then some injury or illness happens, and their control goes West, and they need to discover how to do it by diet or drugs - and hopefully get back to exercising asap. But as you know, that isn't always a possibility!

Yes, you're right - I was highly active with both dog walking and work walking/activities. I've never thought of it like that.

I've really got to get over this thing about going out on my own - I'm okay if its just in to the next village on a bus but walking any distance more than a couple of hundred yards is worrying both because of the pain (but I could tramadol myself up to overcome that) - but mainly because last time I went for a walk on my own I fell over - and that was in pre-Jack days - so only two dogs - luckily landing on Millie gave me a soft landing.

Two years since I met up with my brother (VERY long story) so worth it :-)

I would suspect soak them in pernod or they may use a little sambuca.

Just catching up again. Have been having problems with the forum yesterday and today but it's working again

I'd agree with that. I knew my BG'S came down with exercise but pre Libre I didn't appreciate they went on falling for 2 hours after. In fact they go into quite a nosedive.
Been a funny old day. Last night I was so tired I actually felt unwell. Difficult to explain and I don't know what caused it. Went out like a light and I had 4 overnight BG dips. I'd gone to bed on 6.7 and a FBG of 6.4 would you belive. Had to give DIL a lift so ended up I didn't really have time for breakfast so grabbed an edam mini and a coffee with cream. I got as far as 8.4 just before Aqua Fit at which point it went down and down. Didn't have lunch either - just more cheese and decided to do my shopping so weekend would be free. So by the time I got to dinner boy was I hungry. Sensor held up well during Aqua with its new film and tubular bandage. Nice to get a full class in. I suspect MFP will be moaning at me for today's food intake.

Oh and my small amount of food today amounted to 49g of protein. I may have to increase my 'desired' weight !

So, basically, much of yesterday for you was a cheese fast :).

One of the reasons I chose 11st was because I didn't think the amount of protein recommended for 10st was enough for me on an everyday basis. On the great day I get to 11st I might re-evaluate but I think feeling deprived is a guaranteed way of making me give in to temptation.

Interesting this morning, we had a delayed breakfast so I did what you do @maglil55 I tested for FBG (5.3) then an hour later tested as Mr C was dishing up breakfast - 6.7!!!! If I had done what I normally do - only test FBG - I wouldn't have known about that 6.7. It's a shame that I won't be testing at the 2hr PP time but I don't like doing it in public.

Weird - just after posting my last post I started feeling a bit buzzy headed. Checked for BG (like you do) but it was fine - so it can only have been the coffee. Checked and Mr C had made me a double Tassimo Costa Americano - which isn't decaff. No wonder I'm buzzing!

Or a cheese fest.....although probably not enough for a cheese fest.
Bed on 6.9 last night and FBG 6.9 too. Very stable night according to Libre with the usual dip. Before you think all sounds good it made it to 8.1 pre breakfast.
I think I am just going to try to keep the protein down and hope for the best.
It's a glorious day and I did my shopping yesterday in the hope of a weekend to do as I please. No such luck! Currently on a tour of bank, post office and shops with son and No 2. Still almost done so not the whole day wasted.

@maglil55
when does your sensor run out?

I can very well remember the almost-separation-anxiety I felt when the first one expired for me. :hilarious: Hadn't expected to take it so much for granted in just 2 short weeks.

Oh, that and the irritation of going back to prick testing. But I got over it fast. Just went straight back to the usual routines, really.

5 days. I have another 2 though. I plan on putting the new one on in 3 days to give it 2 days to settle this time and see if we can get a bit more accurate. Seems to be about 0.2 below apart from when it goes doo lally. My fingers are enjoying the rest too. Only just made the 8 hour scan this morning - Must have been tired.
Like you I think I would miss it if it wasn't there.

Isn't it a gorgeous afternoon? After a lot of retail therapy we came home and SUNBATHED while having a naughty G 'n' T. Fabulous. And now Mr C's going to BBQ the chicken we were going to have baked for dinner. :) :)

Even better - last year's shorts and little tops actually still fit! A miracle!!!

Now.... didn't I read somewhere that Prosecco doesn't have any protein and is low in carbs (but we'll ignore the calorie bit).

I had a 'funny turn' in M&S outlet this morning. Standing at the till and the world kind of slipped sideways - apparently I went very white and next thing I know I'm sitting on a chair with a glass of water with people clucking over me and someone threatening to call an ambulance. I am getting very bored with getting things wrong with me while I'm out shopping. It possibly was due to the caffeine in the coffee this morning.

?? Had a child gone online for you?
This is like text messages my grandsons send if they get my phone.

Yes. Maybe Freema uses a translation thingy when she's posting.

It was indeed a glorious afternoon. Had you drunk enough water? I always find if I feel off it is usually due to hydration especially on a hot day. Alternative is blood pressure. Much as you don't like Doctor have you had a blood panel recently?

Do you feel OK now?

Yes, I'm fine now. Me 'n' Mr C have been discussing my 'strange moments' and we both think it has something to do with me drinking coffee with caffeine in. Both times have been on Saturdays and both times I have had a 2 x Tassimo coffee with caffeine in - I always have a HUGE mug of coffee in the mornings. I don't usually drink anything with caffeine in so my husband is keen to do a test to find out for sure.... personally I'm quite happy to assume that it is until its proved to me that it isn't by a few Saturday shopping trips after decaff.

Blood pressure IS an issue for me. I'm on a couple of meds for high BP and I know its still on the high side at the moment but it seems strange for a 'turn' to come on only on Saturdays (and its mainly on Saturdays that I have Tassimo coffee and go shopping).

I had bloods done at the same time as my HbA1C - nothing untoward came up - or nothing that the DN picked up on. So I think I'll just be avoiding caffeine from now on.
