Since Thursday last week, my ketones have been going really high and then really low, I don't know why as I have been doing my insulin, doing correction doses. I don't know if it is because I haven't been feeling very well lately or if im doing something wrong.

I am honestly doing my insulin, properly now, especially after I watched a video and that about someone with the same diabetes.

My blood glucose is 19.6 as well. (Lowest than it has been before).

Hi @Alex_B :) It's brilliant that you're getting control of your diabetes  Well done!

The ketones could be because you're ill, but ketones will also appear if your blood sugar is high. Very, very roughly a blood sugar above 12 or so will usually produce ketones. These will increase ot decrease according to what your blood sugar does. If your blood sugar is 19.6 then ketones would be expected.

Are you getting support from a DSN to bring your blood sugar down?

Edited to,add that ketones and high blood sugar can also make you feel ill.

My ketones at the minute are 4.8, on Saturday they were 5.3. I am emailing my Diabetes nurse right now to ask her why they are like this. I will see what she says. I have an appointment at the clinic on May 18th.

@Alex_B That sounds high, and along with your high blood sugar is potentially worrying.

If you haven't got a reply from your DSN and still have ketones at that level, I'd give 111 a ring for advice.

Hi @Alex_B welcome back, do you know that running high Bg levels goes hand in hand with infection, it fuels infection as with too much glucose in your system any infection will feed off this. Getting your bg levels down into single figures is vitally important. Have you had any success in keeping below 12 much ? Your DSN will need to work out if your taking the right amount in correction doses so go through this when you speak to her, can you ask her to call you tomorrow, I wouldn't wait any longer to get in top of this, your levels for both ketones and bg levels are too high. Sending you a big hug, hope you get this sorted out tomorrow.

I have been doing my insulin, doing correction doses. .

My blood glucose is 19.6 as well.

19.6 is a high blood sugar, high enough to cause ketones.

You say you've been doing correction doses, did you know ketones also require a correction and the correction dose needed to get rid of ketones can be higher than the correction dose needed just to deal with high blood sugar because ketones are caused by an insufficiency of insulin. So if you have ketones and you give a correction dose which is calculated to bring down your blood sugar but doesn't have any additional insulin to deal with the ketones it might just get gobbled up by stopping the ketones increasing but won't do anything to get rid of ketones or bring blood sugar down.

The sick day rules suggest giving 20% of your total daily dose of insulin every two hours to deal with ketones over 3mmol. Ketones of 5.3 is really alarmingly high. If youre not confident following sick day rules and giving correction doses to deal with them and you can't get hold of your DSN call 111.
