My addiction to carbs
I am asking this question for a friend. She is convinced she has diabetes, based on very occassional one hour spikes of around 200 after eating large high carb meals like pasta or sweets. Levels are down after 3 hrs. Her fasting, hba1c and other post meal readings are fine. She is negative for antibodies but is still convinced she has a problem and now wants to be tested for mody and get a c peptide done. She has had 2 endo's tell her she doesnt have a problem but she's like a dog with a bone and insist two of her children have blood sugar problems too ... 3 of them are overweight and one is not. One of the overweight ones has an hbalc of 5.6 and she tested the skinny one once immediately after a sugary drink and he was around 180. I feel she is actually wishing the disease upon herself. What do others think?

If she, and no-one else, has diabetes, how come she has a testing kit?

To me it sounds like she is definitely spending too much time on a problem that doesn't exist.

@Lesleywo If she's had medical input and been told all's ok, then I'd suggest she leaves it and perhaps just has a follow up test in 6 or 12 months or whatever.

I don't know if she's wishing diabetes on herself or not, but I do know that all the publicity about diabetes can worry some people who then convince themselves they have it.

If I was her, I'd concentrate on my general health and fitness, not worry, and get a follow up check at some point in the future if there was a need to.

A single test of 200 mg/dl aren't enough to prove anything, the blood sugar are on top 30-60 min after eating, so testing 1 hour after eating won't give the complete picture.

The question are does she frequently get readings above 200 and higher? Or did she just got this reading one single time?

If this reading was a single occation then I agree with the endos, and hope she can forget the idea of getting diabetes.

She has had a few around that number over the last 12 months. She is getting another hba1c in 3 months but i dont think she'll be happy 'til she gets a diagnosis of diabetes. She thinks she shoukd be able to eat copious amounts of junk food and have normal blood sugar. Isnt that like saying you should be able to eat as much as you like without gaining weight?

Has she considered checking out insulin + glucose response as per Dr Joseph Kraft OGTT? That may give a more complete picture...

A good thing that getting a diagnosis of diabetes are hard. I wonder why she are so obsessied with getting a diagnosis? Does she have any symptoms, or does she just get a few high numbers whem checking after eating.

I mean getting 10-11 mmol a few times doesn't indicate anyting if her blood sugar goes down normally.

No she doesn't have any symptoms. Just freaks out when she gets a high number, tries to analyse everything, doesn't understand why her hba1c hasn't reduced despite losing weight. Personally I think the stress of all this is a hell of a lot worse on her body than the odd random elevated blood sugar from a high carb, large meal. She needs to believe the two endo's she's seen and just get on with her life instead of comparing her blood sugars to her husband's. I believe she needs psychological help for health anxiety.
