They put drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils so they can have a look at the back of the eye
The drops sting like buggery and the dilated pupils make your eyes very photosensitive and watery as a response. Your vision will be affected and if you had an accident youre insurance could be invalidated. I always rearrange appts for after work

Hi. I work on a laptop and expected to be able to carry on working afterwards given an hour to recover but I couldn't even after a couple of hours - I was really shocked! Just could not see it! Not sure what job you do but go easy on yourself :-)

@dudester - you may not be so badly affected. I found that the drops did not sting much at all and my vision was not really affected. However, I have the same drops used in the glaucoma clinic and am much more affected in that clinic as apparently they use a larger dose.

You should assume you will be affected so it may not be possible for you to go to work straight after your appointment.

Im not driving arranged an escort but theres not really a day I can arrange for it after work.
I didn't drive after my test and I wouldn't advise it but I could have seen well enough with sunglasses on. Once at home without bright sunlight no problem apart from reading would have been a strain. The drops sting a bit but only for a few seconds, nothing to worry about.

You will need a good pair of sunglasses to wear, as it will be very bright when you get back out into the daylight.

I would be taking the time off till my eyes returned to normal after the eye test.

A good hat with a peak. like a baseball hat helps too...?

If you do work that relies on detail? Leave it a little while..

I have been having these eye tests for ten years. Usually, I am ok to work after about 90 minutes. However, on one occasion, my vision was blurred for more than 4 hours and I never worked out what was different about that year.

My usual plan is to return to work but not do computer work. For example, I take phone calls for an hour or so.

There really is nothing to it. All it does is slightly sting for seconds only (as if you just peeled an onion)

The drops that are used will relax the muscles in the eyes causing them to dilate its a bit like comming out of a dark room into bright sunlight also though it reduces the eyes ability to focus on near object so reading etc will be out for a few hours . But yes your ability to work will be impaired

The eye drops sting a little. It leaves the eyes dilated. They took two photos of the back of each eye, one looking forward and one looking to the side. Vision was only slightly blurry afterwards. You need sunglasses to protect against bright sunlight.

I drove the day after without problems. Results take up to six weeks. I have not had my results yet.

All the tests in this little corner of Yorkshire are done on a Monday morning. I think the drops really sting (and make me sneeze) and my eyesight is pretty rubbish for about 3-4 hours and then progressively gets better over the next few hours to be just about okay by dinner time. When I was working I always did a swap with someone so I wasn't working that day. I definitely wouldn't want to drive and, as someone said before, if you did drive have an accident your insurance will be invalid as you have been medically warned not to drive.

In the UK it is illegal to drive after the drops have been put in. Operating machinery may not be a good idea. The light off my computer screen hurt so much I couldn't look at it. 4 hours later things improved. Back to normal after 5 hours.

The drops do take a while to wear off some get back to normal fairly quickly with me it takes about 5 hours and yes you will need sunglasses as you will probably find the daylight blinding

I had no pain from the drops but wished I'd taken sunglasses as the sun was too bright to open my eyes for more than a few seconds and it wasn't a sunny day.

I am due to have my first test on 30 June. My problem is a little different in that I have quite poor eyesight and wear specs, I do not own a pair of prescription sunglasses so I fear that I will be blind after the test until I get home. I will have a large son with me but I have to admit I'm inches away from cancelling the appointment because the close it gets the more anxious I am becoming.

Wear some ordinary sunglasses over the top of your normal glasses or wear a hat with a brim? If you have your son with you it won't be a problem.
