How quickly does prediabetes move to full blown diabetes

I was told I'm prediabetic in July after giving birth, since then I've cut out carbs, and sugar. I do eat whole grains, etc quinoa. I haven't started exercising as yet, but I have been eating a lot healthier. And I lost weight. How quickly can I move from prediabetes to diabetes?

According to research, if you manage your lifestyle well - diet, exercise and weight, you may never get diabetes. It can be reversed.

Do ensure that you work towards that.

Moderate exercise of 30 min daily.

Cut down on sugar drinks and high carb food

BMI should be in normal range

If you eat a low carb diet there is no certainty that you will become diabetic.
Unfortunately what you write can't be true - you can't eat high carb foods and be cutting out carbs at the same time. Whole grains are way over the 10 percent carb limit I set for 'ordinary' foods. I do eat small amounts of foods up to 15 percent carbs, but not every day and only in small amounts.
I was a full blown diabetic with Hba1c of 91, now I have normal numbers so I don't worry about it, but I will stick to the low carb foods from now on.

Check with your doctor or whoever, but if I were you, I would ditch the quinoa now: whole-grains are the same grains that make you sick, just with the original skin on them. My (unscientific) opinion is that eating whole grains isn't much different to drinking whisky mixed with green tea and expecting it to be non-alcoholic and healthy, or maybe wrapping a cigarette in a lettuce leaf and expecting it to refresh your lungs.

well no one can really say for sure... but of cause, if one does not change lifestyle/eating pattern the road towards type 2 is rather short I think.

when being at a higher level of average blood glucose and also have the high spikes, on the other hand, the adding conditions also turns up much more rapidly... it is a mix of many aspects high blood glucose high spiking and of one's bodies individual weak points.

Diabetes does not have to be a progressive disease. With good control you may never develope T2.

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes after suffering a heart attack over 10 years ago. I try and manage my weight and exercise, but not always easy. About five years ago I had help with my diet from a young lady at my local pharmacy and lost four stone. Just going along, getting weighed and keeping a food diary. I think most pharmacies offer this as a free service. This took me down to normal levels. Unfortunately she went off to Uni and there was no one else available at the time to help. I have been struggling to keep he weight off ever since, even though I do try to eat sensibly and do regular exercise. I know it can be done!!

Hello.I think all this pre. stuff is thought up by big pharma and the medics.Lets invent another disease to boost profits. I showed my doctor a reading of 6 mml on my meter. He said that's fine.I showed another doctor a 6 mml reading she said i was prediabetic. When i last saw the practice nurse. i said this morning my fasting blood sugar reading was 6 .8 mml. She said oh that's a very good reading. So where do you go from there? I read a report recently, that most people termed as prediabitic ,do not develop full blown diabetes. by all means check your blood sugar levels.I personally would not worry about it.

Medically it would only take the time of your next hba1c showing higher bgs to change you from prediabetes to diabetic. (3months) or yearly as most prediabetic patients are tested on the nhs.

I'd really love to know if I have ever been tested for diabetes pre 2002 diagnosis date.
I had symptoms 40yrs ago. Prediabetic at 6yrs old or full diabetic type2? I wonder.

Do prediabetics get diabetic symptoms?

Good morning,

Like everyone else has said - possibly never :)

I was told I was pre-diabetic last summer so did a mix of LCHF diet and 5:2 fasting - lost the weight and lower the blood sugar readings. A few of my friends who were in the same boat have seen what I've done and are giving it a go.

My best advice - keep your eye on what's happening on this forum site - lots of great advice, and pointers to helpful information

Cheers, Steve

Yes, we get symptoms and complications mainly neuropathy and retinopathy at around 20%

My symptoms are more noticeable when I have colds and infections that push my blood glucose levels up.

Hey David, I'm very new to this game but my understanding is doctor one was correct - 6.0 isn't prediabetic, 6.3 and above is, doctor two was incorrect, and practice nurse was correct - 6.8 for a diabetic is good, not good for someone who is prediabetic though. I also understand that a reading shouldn't be taken in isolation but rather as part of a picture. What is the HBA1C reading, how consistently are fasting readings high, what does a blood glucose result say etc. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable getting a diagnosis from one stand alone result, but as I say, I'm new to this... My HBA1C was 40, so below pre-diabetic but enough to scare me (particularly as I'm being investigated for PCOS which is linked to insulin resistance). My fasting blood glucose is consistently between 6.3 and 6.9 which would suggest pre-diabetes or impaired fasting glucose. So I'm going to speak with my doctor when I see him next to get his thoughts and possibly more tests. Most people with pre-diabetes may not get full blown diabetes but how much of that is due to lifestyle change early on? How many people with diabetes were prediabetic first? It's interesting stuff. I've not read anything to suggest that prediabeties or insulin resistance isn't a precursor to diabetes, and from what I've seen, a lot of people manage their prediabeties drug free through low carb or lifestyle change so I'm not sure it is financially motivated. But as I say, no expert here!

Well I was pre diabetic eight years ago and I'm not pre diabetic now, so never in my case.
Quinoa is high carb. I tested to see what pushed my blood sugar up. Have you tested and found that whole grains don't increase your bg too much? If you haven't then you could develop full blown diabetes at any time. If you're testing then your very lucky, keep it up, exercise, keep a normal bmi and the odds are you won't develop diabetes :)

Hello ,Kemilly 3 .I was diabetic for 6 years before they told me about it despite having routine 6 monthly blood tests and blood pressure checks. How did i know about it? In 2010 i was in the Philippines.I had and accident and ripped all the tendons and muscles of my knee cap.I had to have an operation to repair it.While in hospital ,the doctor said,do know you have diabetes.Shock Horror.no i said yes he said you've been diabetic for 6 months.I'd had a routine blood test etc.3 weeks prior to going to the Phils.I phone the surgery in the U.K and asked about the results of my test. They said my tests were normal, nothing to worry about. My surgical wound healed up .I felt fine so i forgot about the diabetes.Fast foward to 2015 .I had the usual check up a few days later the doctor rang me up to tell me I had very high blood sugar, could i make an appointment to see her.She gave me a prescription for Metformin .which i never took,She insisted i took statins .I refused.so she got nasty.I walked out of her surgery never to return.6 months ago i developed weeping none healing ulcers on my lower legs.I had to get my blood sugar down .I didn't fancy having my legs chopped off, making me shorter than ever.I went on 24 hour alternate fasting diet.At the start of the diet ,my weight was 14 st 10lbs.My fasting blood sugar readings were between 10.8 mml and 16+mml .Now my weight is 11 st 7lbs.My fasting blood sugar readings are between 3.7 mml and 5.8 mml. I can eat what i like without any adverse effects.I feel very much better. My leg ulcers have healed.,the feeling in my feet and toes have returned to normal.I don't have to get up in the night 12 or 13 to go to the toilet.no more frightening dizzy spells or hot sweats. The hot aches and stabbing pains in my feet have gone.I now consider myself free of diabetes.despite what these so called doctors say.Finding a decent doctor is difficult they are few and far between. If i'd taken the treatment the doctor was offering.I now would probably in a wheelchair, weighing 20 st with no feet or legs,or probably dead. Most diabetics i have known have died.some quite young. The problem is i am retired.i used to get good treatment on the NHS.when i was younger.Since I retired at 65 I found the treatment at this malpractice has gone right down the pan.I haven't seen a doctor in over 2 years.I treat myself ,sucessfully up to now.In conclusion ,try the fasting diet out it worked for me.It may work for you.I found it easy to get used .Better than calorie controlled diets.I bought a book by Dr.Jason Fung.A Complete Guide to Fasting. It gives all the information you need to know about fasting diets.Money well spent in my opinion.or you can find him on Utube.I watched a Panorama programme last nighr .about diabetes. A diabetic specialist said the normal readings for none diabetics is between 3.8 mml to 7.8mml.same as N.I.C.E in the U.K.

I have read that pre-diabetics are much more likely than "normal" people to have heart attacks and strokes. And there are people on this forum who say they have already started to have diabetic complications even though they are classed as pre. Personally, I recently found out that I am pre-pre diabetic with an A1c of 41. I see that as an opportunity, a last chance, to turn things around or at least stop them in their tracks. I am doing my utmost to take advantage of that opportunity. Many people here did not have that chance, and only found out about their condition when it was much farther advanced. Yes, medical ignorance and misinformation is frustrating, but I'm not going to react to that by destroying myself, particularly as I am in touch here with many experienced people who are willing to take time and trouble to help me.

Hello Alexander 100.I'm not telling anyone what to do.Its just my opinion. What i have read either right or wrong.I reversed my type 2 diabetes 6 months ago or i'd like to think i am cured of it ..It seems very promising.I was diabetic for 6 years before they told me ,despite having routine 6 monthly blood tests and blood pressure checks.I felt fine ,until much later.6 months ago I developed weeping none healing ulcers very painful.I had to reduce my blood sugar somehow.I went on a 24 hour alternate fasting diet.I bought a book by Dr Jason Fung .A Complete Guide to Fasting.A very good book money well spent in my opinion. With the diet i lost over 3st. in weight .My blood sugar fastings were between 10.8 and 16+mml .Now my fasting blood sugar reading are between 3.7 mml and 5.8 mml.I feel very much better. like a new man I didn't realise how **** i felt.I can eat what i like with no adverse effects. My leg ulcers have healed up.I don't have to get up in the night to go to the toilet 12 or 13 times.no more hot sweats .no more frightening dizzy spells I've the full feeling back in my feel and toes.no more falling asleep ,even when in a pub or cafe. The hot aches and stabbing pains ,i was getting in bed at night have gone.Try the diet out it may get your bg back to normal in a short time.and keep it there.I am trying to help people out with type 2 diabetes.A terrible disease.

There is really no reason to be concerned PROVIDED you start to manage your per-diabetic condition. The treatment is very easy, it works like a charm and thousands of patients have all successfully reverse this condition. You need to go on a Low Carb-High-Fat (LCHF) diet for at least 8 weeks. It is important to know that the main problem is insulin resistance, if you refrain from eating all refined sugars, and no alcohol, and up your fat content, you will see the miracle with your own eyes! Go on You-Tube and look at Dr. Jason Fung 's videos, there are many of them available. Just follow it to the letter, and the result will speak for itself!

The current prevailing medical view of Type 2 diabetes is glucose centric. The decision for medical intervention starts when glucose levels exceeds a certain predetermined threshold.

But researchers are well aware that when glucose levels exceeds that threshold, we are essentially look at a late stage of a typically highly preventable condition. A condition that take over a decade to progress...although now we see children below 10 years old being diagnosed with the condition.

The chart below shows that 10-15 years before glucose levels starts to rise (indicating glucose impairment), insulin levels starts rising to compensate. This chronically high level of insulin secretion leads to betacells exhaustion and eventually results in T2D diagnosis.

gr2.jpg

Dr Joseph Kraft's insulin centric model captures this nicely.

Kraft-Curves-Cummins-1024x658.png
Kraft-Curves-Cummins.png

A prediabetic condition indicates that the current diet demands too much insulin to keep glucose levels in a healthy range. Continuing the same dietary patterns over years will eventually lead to increasing insulin resistance and loss/dysfunction of insulin producing beta cells.

The solutions to consider is
- carbs lite fats friendly lifestyle that reduces the insulin demands
- eat only during the day to allow time for the body to recover (12-18 hrs fast)
