curing diabetes

Why is it so difficult to cure diabetes (I do not accept there is any similarity between type 1 and type 2, there is only one diabetes} We LOSE weight with diabetes where older people's weight usually increase!) A large amount of money is provided for research but of course this is spent looking for pills and potions. Why do doctors not ask what major events their patients have suffered recently and work out what indecision they have suffered. Yes it doesn't sound much but if there is no viruses or other external causes what else can it be? Also I remember at school, before I knew anything about diabetes, I was told the ancient Greeks gave name to the condition and they treated the condition by TALKING to their patients. Why would this name stick unless they had some success. The important thing to understand is we ALL think in the same way although of course the particular cause in all of us may be completely different. Patients with irritable bowel system are usually overly tidy people. It would strike me if they have trouble keeping there home tidy or their work space then they ''tidy their body".
This may be of no interest to anyone at the moment but as for cures a simple exercise can prevent strokes and other illnesses. Simply lying flat on your back on a carpet with no pillows and stretching our muscles regularly up our bodies for a count of 5 will release any muscles locked up. It's a muscle in the artery which locks up and causes a blockage from my experience and of course I'm not a doctor.
Lie on your back arms by your side and relax, press your toes forward count to 5 and then pull the toes back for a count of 5 and then tighten the buttocks similarly. Then move up to the stomach and again a count of 5, then the shoulders and finally the head we screw our faces into a simple funny face and the lie back and think of something pleasant and not energetic.

Some thoughts, more or less at random.

Type 1 is believed to be an autoimmune disease whose cause is mysterious. The pancreas stops producing sufficient quantities of insulin. Many, probably most cases are diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood.

Type 2 is usually characterized by insulin resistance, at least initially. The pancreas is producing insulin, but the body has become resistant. As a result the pancreas goes into overdrive and produces larger and larger quantities of insulin but blood glucose levels continue to increase because of insulin resistance. In many patients Type 2 diabetes is associated with excess weight, diet, or a sedentary lifestyle but the direction of any causative links is obscure (and some T2s don't have those factors).

Based on that, I don't think finding the cause of "diabetes" can be generalized into a single quest although it is of course not unusual for Type 2 to morph into Type 1 over time. It is a hormonal disease, and (as far as I can tell) endocrinology is one of the most complex areas of medicine. It is not surprising that progress in "curing" diabetes has been halting.

I don't think any of the existing treatments (and I include lifestyle/diet under the heading of "treatments") provides a "cure" at all, with the possible exception of bariatric surgery. What these treatments do is step in to reduce stress on the pancreas in one way or another, or to increase its production of insulin. For some people with diabetes, full control of the disease ("remission" or "reversal") is achievable, although it takes persistence and effort.

I'm not a doctor, but it seems to me that a real cure would have to "fix" the pancreas (for those with reduced insulin production) and eliminate insulin resistance (for those who have it). It would need to do this for ever, and eliminate the need to take drugs -- or at the very least, reduce the drug dependency to a simple daily drug cocktail with no side effects and no lifestyle alterations needed.

I look at it this way. As recently as the early 20th century, diabetes was a death sentence for Type 1s as well as for many Type 2s. We don't seem to be anywhere near a cure, but we have managed to transform it into a manageable chronic disease and progress is being made year by year. Thank goodness we are are living today, and not 300 years ago.

(Since I am not an expert, and only recently diagnosed, I probably made some mistakes in this post so please correct my mistakes!)

4 posts in about 4 years, looking back at posting history, seemingly denying that there is a difference between T1 and T2.

Effectively it appears that the OP is denying that there is T2 diabetes. If you are still producing insulin you are not diabetic. A strange view.

After reading this. I sat and had a good, old chat with my pancreas and it still refuses to chuck out any insulin. In fact, it laughed at me and flounced around in my abdominal cavity.

Yeah, I think mine is a megalomaniac and wants to take over my life. Perhaps I should give it a Christian name and talk to it while no one else is looking.

Type 1, is in fact, an autoimmune disease, provable by the presence of antibodies.

it is of course not unusual for Type 2 to morph into Type 1 over time.

Type 2 does not "morph into" type 1 over time. A type 2 diabetic may progress to a type 2 diabetic treated with insulin. But how the diabetes is treated does not change what type of diabetes it is, it remains type 2 diabetes treated with insulin.

The cause of type 1 and type 2 diabetes remain entirely separate, even if the treatment becomes similar.

(Since I am not an expert, and only recently diagnosed, I probably made some mistakes in this post so please correct my mistakes!)

Well, sorry, but, you did ask...!

I read this post and had to look at the date to check it wasn't April 1st!!!I have both type 2 diabetes and IBS,a horrible combination. The OPs theories about the cause of IBS are a laugh,I'm certainly not an overly tidy person at times when I'm crafting just plain untidy!

Did you like the bit about strokes being caused by arteries contracting, so just relax? Possibly another post. Certainly not mainstream medicine.

Well I laid on my back, arms by my side.
Press toes forward. Should have clenched buttocks first. Apologies to wife, smell lingered:).
Tensed up buttocks. Wife said " stop that, we're not due an early night "
Worked up to stomach. Apologised to wife again, smell wasn't as bad this time:)
Shoulders and face went okay.
Laid back and thought of something pleasant and non- energetic. Might try for the early night after all ;););).

Still ruddy T1 diabetic though.

Strange as it may seem. @davidhenderson 's technique somewhat reminds me of the old "warm up" in drama class..?
Back in "the day" I had aspirations of becoming an actor....

It didn't cure my bad acting either.. :sorry:

Talk about what ... economics war gardening shoe making?
Talk to someone and their serious illness goes away?
I'm thinking this is a windup merchant.

Oh The Rower, this made me laugh, thank you.

Mind over matter won’t work unless the mind begins to understand the matter, buts a laboratory, conducts extensive well-considered experiments, employs double blind with another laboratory, and keeps abreast of emerging findings from a whole raft of other laboratories.

Buts? Ruddy pred text - BUYS!!!!

..... What the Romans "ripped off" & did for us. ;)

Now strangely I took this as having a good listening HCP? As opposed to "take these & call me in the morning?"
A "bespoke" patient/doctor relationship as opposed to "one size fits all..."
But this would aid a personal treatment. Not a cure.

:) You might be trying for an early night on your own out in the garden shed.

For ND to reverse T2 you have to have been fairly recently diagnosed. In the second trial, the last one for which we have formal results, it worked for 87% of the group who had been diagnosed up to 4 years, and 50% of the group who had been diagnosed for up to 6 years. Any low cal diet for any length of time will work as long as you lose weight off your liver down to your "personal fat threshold". This varies from person to person but is thought to be around 15% of your weight at initial diagnosis. (Then test).
