Hey
I'm very new to all this. Took metformin for years.
2 days ago was put on insulin injection. 16units novarapid in morning and 3units after meals.
I'm not eating at the moment just not feeling Hungary. My last sugar was 2 hours after eating 2 sausage rolls. Was 26.7
I know this is pretty high.
Need some advice ??

Kelsey - I'm not an insulin user at all, but my reading of others experiences suggests it takes a while to get the dosing right to match what you're eating.

26.7 is rather high, so you'll want to see that come down a bit over time. What were your numbers looking like before you started insulin?

There's little doubt that many folks also find their blood numbers are very much impacted by what they eat and drink Some members have found that with some dietary changesm, they have been able to poisitively impact in their blood numbers, and some have been able to reduce their insulin doses, or even stop the insulin completely.

As you are new to insulin, it would seem a bit dangerous to change your way of eating too much until you get used to the insulin and how your body reacts to it. Those who make those changes need to be confident in adjusting their insulin doses, depending on what they eat and what their meter says.

Good luck with it all. I'm sure some others will be along to comment either this evening or tomorrow.

Am I gonna be ok if reading continue be this high? And I've not even properly for a while awaiting MRI scan.

What did your Doctor or nurse say when they started on insulin? When do you next talk to them? Are you to call them on Monday with your scores over the weekend?

How long have your numbers been in the 20s? What were they before you started insulin? Please keep testing your blood, and hopefully it'll come down a bit, but if it's going any higher, I'd be inclined to call 111 and ask for advice. I'd think you don't fee that clever with numbers in the 20s.

Nobody on this website can tell you what to do, or tell you how to change your insulin doses.

Do you have a date for your MRI?

However, I stress if your numbers aren't dipping a bit, you might want to call 111, to reassure yourself that you are staying safe. It's what they're there to do.

As I say, I'm not an insulin user, so I don't have experience of using Insulin.

I wonder if @urbanracer is around. He is a Type one, but he might have some views on those numbers.

Fingers crossed for you.

I'm fairly new to this aswell, but.. who gave you the insulin instructions? I thought Novarapid was to be taken as close to before you eat as you can, therefore don't understand why you're having to have 16 units first thing and then your other units after meals?

My understanding is that taking the Nova just before you eat, it will be starting to work as your BGs spike, whereas taking it after eating it will be longer than the 2 hour mark when your insulin begins to work, or at-least that's the explanation I got from my diabetic nurse.. Maybe someone here will know something I don't though

Exercise and plenty of water will help bringing BGs down whilst getting your insulin figured out though, it doesn't have to be anything major, just a walk you wanted.

If feeling unwell, with such high BG, it can be a sign of ketones and I would advise calling 111 to be safe, no point in possibly making yourself worse waiting until Monday.

Hi @Kelsey56909 ,

It will depend on the individual and one can get away with high glucose levels for a while but it is likely to be damaging you. The body can repair itself to some extent but it would be wrong to pretend that you can let this continue for too long without permanent damage ocurring. Have you been losing weight as well?

As @Deanoh has suggested, if feeling unwell then please seek medical assistance by dialling 111 or get down to A and E if you can.

Your insulin regime seems rather strange, but I don't know what your doc is thinking so it's difficult to comment further.

Kelsy - I would completely agree with Deanoh. If you feel unwell, please do ring 111 or got to A&E now. Please don't wait until Monday.

Hi. Those insulin instructions appear very strange. As another poster has said, is the Novorapid the only insulin you have been given? What is your BMI and how old are you? The reason I ask is to help indicate whether you might be T1 and not T2. Your BS levels are far too high and insulin if correctly adjusted should control levels within a day or so. If you feel unwell do go to A&E if necessary; drink plenty of water and keep checking your levels.

hi there lovely kelsey !!
if it were me with those sort of readings i would ring 111 immediately , or if you really feel unwell on top of it I would just go to A&E
insulin is meant to be lowering those sort of numbers , clearly you are struggling -- i would not wait until monday when GP surgery opens.

also agree with @Daibell regarding keeping yourself hydrated and keep testing.

be safe
xx

3 units don't seem alot
Maybe need increase
Should it improve if I eat stuff what's best too eat

hi there lovely --
at this moment in time if I were in the mid 20's BG wise -- i would not eat

I know I am a definite type 1 so advice could vary -- but in my long long experience with type 1 -- if i get a day with high numbers ( over 15 ) -- I just stop eating until I get numbers back in range -- I know it sounds harsh ( and it is ) -- but sometimes our bodies don't behave as they are meant to with D

@mahola has just posted the best advice you will get in my opinion !!!!!

Kelsey you need medical advice now so please phone 111 and tell them how you feel. The reason you don't feel hungry is your BS are to high. Can i ask have you been vomiting at any point, but waiting is not the way to go you may need hospital treatment to bring your sugar down and feeling sleepy is also a sign of high BS

kelsey can you check for ketones because if you have them you need medical advice and help, drink water and do not do any exercise as this will effect your ketones making them go higher. The more i am thinking you need to go to a & e now to be on the safe side as 111 may take an hour to call you back

great advice -- our OP may not have a ketone meter though

@Kelsey56909
we have not heard from you in a little while -- do get going on this please.

Noticed you were online this morning, how are you feeling today and did you speak to anyone?

Not yet. Sorting it today.
Call 111 Yes?
Don't take insulin if not eating
And is it better to check before or after meals?
Yeah 111 or if you're still unwell just walk into a&e as 111 can often take a an hour or 2 to get a call back.

After food is when your BG will rise, 2 hours after is when they're generally at their highest, I personally test before and after a meal, then monitor after that if I feel the need to.
