but if it is well controlled does it still constitute a risk? 5 years ago mine was 163/95 at diagnosis and probably had been rising for some years prior to that. I was put on medication which brought it down to normal levels. Most weeks it averages at below 120 systolic. Now my HbA1c is into the prediabetic level and I wonder if the hypertension is a factor; if not where have these higher than normal glucose levels come from? The only person in my family who had it was my grandmother and that was back in the 1950s . She was the same age at diagnosis as I am now - 75. I have my own meter but am still learning how to use it.

It is suggested that there is probably a genetic predisposition for risk re T2. There is no one in my family, going back to my great grandparents, who was known to have had T2 but then some may have died undiagnosed.
When we are young our bodys can compensate for the battering we subject it to but as we age that compensatory factor diminishes. Decades ago the only people to be diagnosed were the over 60s but more and more the younger generation and even children are being found to have the condition. Why the change? In my opinion it is a combination of diet, excercise and education i.e western diet, sedentary lifestyles full of stress and the lack of education not of us the lay people but of HCPs in general who are given so little information on diet that it constitutes scandal.

This short video (12mins) may answer your questions better than I can.

There again I know two people who had Heart Disease and type 2 One lived until the age of 88 years the other 85 One had the conditions since their 50s the other late 40s both controlled their diabetes. So it obviously can be done
