I have been informed that you can purchase the freestyle libre say from Boots at cost price (£35) if you show your medical exemption card (all diabetics should have one) Not the £60 Boots quote for normal purchase. Anybody know if this is correct?

Apologies for hijacking this thread but I'd like to know what the procedure is too.

I went to Superdrug to get the Freestyle Libre and was told I needed proof that I was Vat exempt either by a card (never heard of this so no idea what it is) or a letter from my Dr to say I was exempt.

Those of you who have bought the Lifestyle Libre from Superdrug, what did you do in order to get it for £40?

In my local Superdrug, I've previously shown them my prescription, which clearly says what medication, including diabetes meds, and they accepted this. Each time I buy Sensors, they just take my name and address on a piece of paper. What they do after that, I really don't know but I don't have to pay the VAT
I'm also over 60 yrs so don't pay for prescriptions anyway.

Previously, when buying from Boots, before they went 'prescription only', I had to sign a VAT exemption form and, as I get my meds from them anyway, they had record of my meds already.

Another pharmacy where I got Sensors from only asked me if I was diabetic. I don't remember having to complete a form, sign anything etc.

So, it seems everywhere is different.

I believe if you are exempt paying for prescriptions, you will receive a card once you've sent off a form - ask at your pharmacy. If you have certain ailments, of which diabetes is one, you should be VAT Exempt re specific medications, and diabetic items. Just ask at the pharmacy. Most likely you will have to complete and sign a form

I have the Medical exemption card that I have carried since I was diagnosed in 2012.

This was not acceptable to Superdrug.

I completed an order form in store and stated that I was a diabetic on insulin but they wanted proof, and would not let me order it. Woman said I needed a Vat exempt card or a letter from my Dr stating I should not pay vat.

During the original enquiry, my local Superdrug started out by asking for proof so I asked what they wanted. I showed them my insulin card and my exemption certificate and it seemed to satisfy them. Guess each branch will interpret the rules a little differently.

Thanks for your reply.
What is the insulin card and where can I obtain one?

Insulin cards are credit card sized bits of plastic. I get mine from the diabetes team at the hospital or from the nurse at the GP's
Manufacturer might send you one, I haven't tried.

You could try nominating Superdrug as your repeat prescription collection pharmacy. Then they can see you get your insulin on prescription from them so can't argue.
