Type 1 High bloods when waking up

hello all, I have the strangest problem at the moment, due to my bizarre sleeping pattern I’m starting to take naps in the evening.

so I sleep from about 7pm - 10pm, my blood sugars (for example) were about 5.0 before I went to sleep tonight and I woke up to bloods of 22! Whenever I sleep, my bloods seem to rapidly climb and I have absolutely no idea why, I’m not eating anything before I sleep? I think the nurse I saw had put it down to the illness I have, as I have a throat and tonsil infection at the moment.. it just seems very worrying, I have a complete hatred of high blood sugar levels as I’ve been trying to have good control for so long, but I keep waking up feeling awful, I’m so confused!

Any help is massively appreciated, thank you X

Hi @samowen268 ,

You might need to jog my memory.. Are you on MDI?

Just a guess.. Do you take basal around this time ("10pm") it could be tailing off..?
Would you have normally had a meal around this time? Before the new nap sessions.. Just wondering if this is the case? Your bolus covered the tail off shortfall in the basal till the next basal shot?

Pure speculation, regarding your regime..

I do my Lantus at about 11/12 each night and I eat at about 5ish, but I test my bloods around 7 and they’re fine so I don’t think it’s that I’m having too many carbs for my evening meal! I’m puzzled, I have wondered if I could be having a hypo when I’m going to sleep and that’s why they’ve spiked, is this possible?? Thank u

These naps.. Do you set an alarm to wake at 10pm so you can do your basal?
My thoughts are, a spike as high as 22 from 5mmol could not be due to a liver dump.. Even if you had dropped during sleep..?
Maybe some underestimated carbs delayed by fat "pizza effect" in your 5pm meal?

Well i had thought that, but the only thing I’m eating that is remotely carby is skinny fries, and I keep doing like extra doses because I am paranoid that I’m not injecting enough, 22 just seems crazy high to me !!

I might try some different foods for my evening meal and see how that affects me, I wake up myself haha!

I’m very anxious about these high spikes because I have a fear of them since i got everything better controlled

The throat & tonsil infection may well be taking its toll & causing the blood drive up, coupled with a the Lantus tailing off.
Plus the inactivity of the nap..

But hey! It's only a guess.. Probably just a blip regarding your new sleep patern regime understandably thrown into the "mix" too?

i know I'm more likely to feel at my worse (& unpredictably controlled.) mornings & evenings if I come down with a bug or something...

Are you sure? I'd be wondering whether a hypo is happening at, say, 2am, followed by a liver dump.... It may be worth setting an alarm and doing a night time test just to be sure...

Hi @EllieM ,

@samowen268 's issue is napping at 7pm for 3 hours then waking at 22mmol.

To be fair. Looking at Sam's Lantus shot time at around 11pm (simalar timing to mine.) I wouldn't discount your idea of a 2am test or even at an additional 5am mark.. :)
personally, I wake from my lows. & any morning DP for me only jumps a couple of mmol. I can wake at 4.9/5.1, & in the morning rush prepping for work finish at 6. something or scrape past 7??

Sam's conundrum is an evening thing..
