Hi all,

Today at 8pm I think I took 8u of Levimer rather then 18u by mistake. So what should I do? I am on 1 daily 18u dose of Levimer.

Take the additional 10u at 8am and then revert back to 1 shot of 18u at night.
Nothing just take the 18u at night as usual and run high during the day.
Any other recommendations?

Currently sat here stressing my brains out as I've never taken an incorrect dose in 40 years.

Thanks.

Hi @O_DP_T1, I suppose it depends on how sure you are you had too little. Personally if I wasn't sure I would test every couple of hours and correct with bolus, however my Levemir is split am and pm so not so long for me to wait. I hope all goes well x

First thing is, calm your jets.

Second thing, is it's a miscalc on a basal, no-one has ever died from that. Basals act slowly. I wouldn't be shy of just firing in the the missing piece any time you feel like and then doing the correct number when it's time turns up.

Screwing basal up isn't the same as screwing bolus up.

The worst that's going to happen from taking the missing bit now is that you might get a slow slide into a manageable modest hypo land, which you can keep an eye on. There's unlikely to be any sort of rapid plummet, like you'd get with a major bolus miscalc.

Good luck, and keep some biscuits handy!

Unless you're going to stay up all night or you are 100% certain of the error, I wouldn't take any more before the full dose tomorrow evening and inthe mean time correct with your rapid insulin. Having said that, are your levels much/any higher than expected? Would you expect the missing basal to increase your levels rapidly over night?

On the other hand, it might be an opportunity to try splitting the dose, as many people do with Levemir?

Regards.

Ok so just got up levels are 14!!!! Usually it would be around 5-7 in the mornings. So defo had a knock on effect.

Just took the missing 10u now and will take full dose tonight, question is with all that potential extra long acting floating around at might will this cause major lows?

Thanks for all the replies guys. Problem is I only saw these replies this morning, otherwise I would have taken the missing dose last night.

I'd have taken the missing dose when I realised last night, but then again once I took my basal twice, 2 x 24u Lantus about 45 mins apart by mistake, I went to bed unsure if I'd made the mistake or not so set an early alarm which kept me out of trouble although I don't think my blood went over 5 the next day even with the help of cream cakes and such forbidden foods.

When in doubt miss it out.....just wait untill your next scheduled dose and start again...

So took the usual 18u last night and woke with a BG of 8; levels won't budge from 8-10 no matter how many correction doses I take. I this linked to the basel mess up from Saturday night or the fact that I've been away from the gym for about 5-6 days or both?

Sometimes stuff like this just happens, I've had whole afternoons where it wouldn't drop below 10-12 (and there was only so many corrections I'd consider before getting scared it was all going to kick in at once when wasn't expecting it) - until much later in the evening.

Not necessarily good advice for a T1 that....
Much better being high for a number of hours than dead. As mentioned by Shiba Park a few additional quick acting injections during the day. When I was on MDI (now on a pump) and really busy at night on a few occasions I couldn't remember if I had taken my Lantus. There was no way known I would risk a double dose. I certainly knew in the morning, I felt like *&^@ and had a number of short acting injections during the day as I was as high as a kite.

Rubbish...missing a dose in the circumstance me tioned would be a good enoughh reason....

Can you confirm if you have any experience of taking insulin James ?

Under the circumstances and as it was night time then I would err on the side of caution and miss the dose but still set an alarm for 2am to check BG levels and take a half dose if it was then apparent that it was a miscalculation. Waking high then correcting for another 4-6 hours to reign in bg levels is not an ideal situation.

Not necessarily? So it could be then....why is that Dr. ? Read any information leaflet that come with medicines and it says if u miss a dose do not double up and wait until the next dosage time....what do you think Dr. ?

With all due respect, you class yourself as a T2, so you've no real idea of the nuances of T1 control.

I'd have suggested taking more care, I've only missed 1 basal thinking I'd had it and I found the next day quite tense and didn't do it again....Edit and a couple of years back I took the basal twice, again by being careless and the day after that was tense too.

Yeah sure ..5years on insulin...3 on humulin 70/30 ..2 on levimir nd novo rapid...ok?

Type 1 and Type 2 are totally different conditions. :):)

Again no, I'd imagine you take insulin to overcome your bodys insulin resistance whereas the OP makes no insulin whatsoever hence my comment that yours wasn't necessarily good advice for a T1.
Dont imagine about other peoples conditions...i take insulin because my pancreas packed up

4. The line is drawn here. Please desist the bickering @james11 .

Deletions have been made.

I purchased the INSULCHECK devices that clip on to the insulin pen to track time since last injection. I still sometimes forget to inject but at least I know when I last injected by looking at the timing device.

I keep mine in the fridge, one on top of the other, now my used grey Lantus pen is on top and will be in the morning when I swap it over with my green Lantus pen, which stays on top till night time, best system I've found until someone phones you whilst you've your lantus pen in your hand so you put it away and get confused and stay up fasting till 3am waiting for a rise confirming you've not had it or a drop if you have.
