I used to love mashed banana sandwiches with a generous sprinkling of sugar when I was a kid!

Ye gods - dry wheetabix? Who thought that one up?

Haha my mum! Probably to serve us right for sneaking sugar sandwiches.
You had to have a ton of butter or the weetabix just dried up in your mouth and stuck it together.

Before my mother went crazy she used to make bread pudding, this is not to be confused with bread and butter pudding. This was made from soaked stale bread, currants and sultanas, spices all mixed in. Then cooked in the oven till it was a nice brown colour.

Garbo's wedding cake she called it when it was cold and cut in slices, never could get therrecipe though.

my grandmother used to make one too which was absolutely amazing.. I think she put lard and butter in it as well as soaking the stale bread in water for day.. or something like that. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for me) the recipe died with her.

She soaked it about that long as well, I do not know what the spices were though as that made the nice taste to it.
We have tried a lot of recipes and they are no where near the stuff she made.

She had a Mrs Beetens cookbook with a shed load of recipes alterations in a notebook which she had done. The books was gone when we cleared her possessions out after she died.

Feel quite nauseous after catching up on this thread. That will make fasting till lunch time much easier. :) I think I'll read it every morning.

Thick white bread, spread with butter and marmite and then deep fried. Our school cook’s speciality!

I’ll get my coat...

Stupid people
No bread = NO bacon sarnies - NOT GOING TO HAPPEN
OR not being able to mop up the extra gravy when you have finished your dinner
No toast

White bread makes me ill not just higher bgs. My tummy gurgles on white bread. Acid reflux goes bananas too.
No more for me. Eaten if nothing else now.

Growing up in NZ. Tinned spaghetti sandwiches, pickled beetroot sandwiches, banana sandwiches, vegemite and crisp sandwiches all on slabs of fresh white bread. Mum used to send us to the bakery to buy crusty bread straight from the oven and inevitably half of the interior was scoffed before we got home. Carb porn!!!

many people spend ages trying to find low carb bread (which must surely be an oxymoron).

It's not just bread.

I personally cannot understand why people want to find "alternatives" for stuff.

There is a huge wide world of delicious low carb food out there to eat.

Sub standard alternatives for high carb food are the last thing I can be bothered thinking about.

I know where you are coming from, but it has to be said that the low-carb breads we often talk about are not designed for diabetic people or indeed anyone with special dietary requirements. Quite often they are marketed just as being 'healthy' or 'high protein' etc rather than 'reduced carbs for people with special needs'.

I know a couple of people who aren't remotely health-conscious who raved about Lidl's high protein rolls, and one who loves LivLife from Waitrose. They don't think these breads are sub-standard at all.

I have often wondered why we see so many threads about bread? ... I'm interested to have your thoughts.

I don't know. But this has become my favourite one. Thanks :D.

You have started possibly the most debauched orgy of bread-porn that we will ever see on this site and this thread may well become legendary. It may even lead to me frying some full-on-nutritionally-void white bread to remind myself how wonderful it was and see if I can get away with it.

Are you pleased with yourself? Did you think things through?

When I was a kid, a treat was buttered toast with lashings of marmite and a variety of different fruits - mashed banana ( no sugar), grapes, melon or apple slices
Not the best for a diabetic in waiting maybe, but positively healthy compared to one of my best friends whose favourite sandwhich consisted of a bar of Dairy Milk chocolate between 2 slices of thick sliced white bread
