Hi all,
I didn't believe it at first, but that was my lab test result for HBA1C today and I feel so happy that I could manage to lower my numbers without using medications.
I have been diagnosed as diabetic at 18/11/2018 with HBA1C 9%. I've been put on mitformin and asked to follow very strict diet in order to control this condition which I used for 1 week. Start following www.diabetes.co.uk was the main reason for quitting mitformin and focus on improving diet and exercises in order to resolve my diabetes. I focused at the first three months on reducing weight which I succeed on using Low Carb diet and lost about 13KG. I could only survive on Low Carb diet for one month only and then went back to moderate carb diet, but that made my BG numbers not stable. My HBA1C after 3 months was reduced to 6.6% which was a great progress for me.
The main problem I was facing is how to manage my BG on moderate carb diet because options for Low Carb meals suggestion I found on many websites are not applicable here in my country, by the way I am from Yemen. My fast BG was between 100-110mg/dl and my post meal readings were 160-200mg/dl and I couldn't get these numbers more lower until I found some advises, after surfing the net looking for healthy eating habits, regarding reorganize meals' time in order to be more healthier. I started to take my breakfast before 8:00am and my lunch between 12:00-1:00PM and according to that, I started to get lower numbers in my fast BG readings, 90-99mg/dl, and post meal readings, no more than 150mg/dl. Based on my home daily testing, I was thinking that my HBA1C will only go down to 5.9%, but when I saw the results today it was very surprising and I was very happy with these results.
In summary, this is my achievement during the period from 18/11/2017 to 27/4/2018
  • My weight went from 95kg to 82kg (my height is 178cm).
  • My HBA1C went from 9% to 5.1%.
  • I am still on moderate carb diet with strict meal timing to achieve lower readings.
I would like to thank you guys for all info you have shared on this website because it helped me a lot in achieving these results and changed my life.

Thank you All and hope that you too achieve the same I have reached to.

Well done, that is a great achievement. You are definitely in the remission zone, but now the hard work starts all over again - keeping it there!! :)

Good work. Keep on rockin @bassamaklan

Congratulations, what an achievement in so short a time! Keep it up and spread the word about how you have made such a great improvement in your health in Yemen, it can't have been easy. Well done.

Dear Bassamaklan,

I think maybe you have much to teach us? I was interested in your timing of meals and maybe I will try this. You posted breakfast and lunch times. What about dinner? What time? Any snacks or snack time?

Yemeni diet is pretty delicious (fish , chicken, lamb, goat, eggs, butter, and vegetables) but you do have a lot of bread and rice. Giving up those last two must be hard.

Hi, I am trying to skip dinner but If I got hungry, I eat between 6-7pm and eat vegetables only because the above rule hasn't been applied for me.
Yes, food in Yemen is good and as you have mentioned, rice and bread are the most important components in Yemeni meals. I had hard time trying to quit rice since I am very addicted to it. For the time being, I eat brown rice once a week and eat for slices multigrain bread in the meal.
regarding snacks, I don't have that much.

Thank you, actually I had a problem trying to convice T2 people whom I know regarding this approach but with no success because they still consider meds as the main option to control T2.
I have 2 persons who followed my path. One of them is my older sister who is T2 for 5 years and the other is my friend's sister who diagnosed recently. My sister started to have great progress in her readings and weight after she quits meds and goes to low carb as also as my friend's sister.
I believe after the last result, it might be possible to convince more people on this approach.

Very well done! Keep up the good work! It’s great here isn’t it!
It is very great indeed. To be honest with you, your hba1c in your signutre and other members reading gave me a lot of motivation to achieve thos results. Everyday when I post my fasting readings on this forum, I take a look on yours and convince myself that this possible.
Thank you, this made my life much better with my wife and my two lovely children.

Congratulations on your success at getting your hbaca1 well within the healthy range. Sounds like it’s more of a challenge for you with food choices in The Yemen. Give yourself a congratulatory pat on the back well done.

Hello Bassamaklan
First I want to say thank you for sharing your success story to reverse diabetes T2 in this wonderful, helpful forum , all what given here in this forum for diabetics peoples, really have given me courage and willingness to manage my blood sugar ,recentelly , I was diagnosed with T2 in November 2017 with 2,45 Mg/dl of BS , It was a horrible days to me when my doctor inform me that's I must start the battle against the diabète , really It's very big battle.

After 4 months later my fasting blood sugar is now stable at 100-115 mg/dl , before lunch is 95mg/dl ,before diner is 100 mg/dl.My wheight was 93 kg , now is 83 kg.

During this periode I have practiced sports and walking ,and I have take a mixture of differents Medicinales herbs twice a time a day in early morning and before bed .

In the beginning I have started taking once time of Glimepiride of 2Mg ,after 5 weeks my doctor advice me to take only half ~1 Mg ,last week I made analyze of HBa1c and I get 6,2% , I hope that next 03 months my HbA1 c will be less than 6 % , this last result was reached after 4 months of low carb Intake.

Here I have questions for you please : is this HBa1c reflect that I m in diabete remission?
How I can reduce my fasting blood sugar bellow 100 Mg/dl?
I will take this occasion to thank you to give me a courage to fight diabete .it's look like we have the same case of diabetes T2 disease.

Again thanks a lot and see you soon.

@bassamaklan Congratulations on the excellent results in such a short time. Reading your post provides encouragement to me with similar types of meals offered here in Pakistan like Yemen. I might also get there if I try hard enough :)

Thank you dear Kamel for your kind response and I hope you get to the desired results soon.
Regarding your question about considering yourself in remission, please read this article https://www.diabetes.co.uk/reversing-diabetes.html which indicating that being you get long term HBA1C under 6% without medication. So, if you can manage to do this, which I believe you can, you can consider yourself in remission.
Believe it or not, my story is very similar to yours in which my fasting FB was 275mg/dl when firstly diagnosed. my first doctor put me on mitformin 850mg and when I checked another doctor, he gave me Glimepiride. I used mitformin for one week and then stopped after reading this article
https://medium.com/@drjasonfung/type-2-diabetes-reversal-the-quick-start-guide-6187210f14ce
The summary of this article that your body is like a bowl and when you are diabetic, this bowl is full and the only way to reverse T2 is to empty this bowl by following low carb diet.
I started following LCHF diet in the first month and lost 5kg and then moved to moderate carb diet which caused me to lose another 5kg in the next 2 months. When I had checked HBA1C for the next time, it reduced to 6.6mg/dl and my FB was stable between 100-110mg/dl and I couldn't get it more lower.
Due to my work, I don't take after breakfast readings, but one day I checked after break fast and found that it is 98mg/dl eventhough my meal was containing about 100gm carbs. I started to check several days after that and get nearly the same results. According to this I started follow up after nutrietion experts and found some of them are talking about meal time. In conclusion, I started to take breakfast before 8am, and lunch between 12-02pm, but regarding dinner it has to be small in portion. Once I did that, my FB started to be get under 100mg and my after meal readings in both breakfast and lunch were under 150mg/dl. After a long period following this rule, I started to notice that if one day I didnt follow the above method, for example take lunch at 3pm, my body still can handle it and get it under 100 next day. note that this method is not applied if I eat white bread by mistake specially in lunch.
Regarding activity, I do 10 minutes excersice in the morning to keep myself active during the day.
I hope this could be an answer for your questions and help you in your quest for remission.

Thank you for your reply. In a matter of fact and in order to cope with my country's food, I have restricted white flour, white rice, and sugar and started to eat anything else in moderate portions This helped me to manage my diabetes better. You can try brown rice and whole grain bread, but definitly you must cut-of white bread.
