Type 2 Constantly Hungry

I was wondering if anyone else experiences this? I am finding that it seems to be getting worse lately? I am ok up until lunch, but as soon as I have eaten lunch, I find that I am constantly hungry, it’s like something is triggered in my brain that constantly makes me want more food? My last blood results were amazing, my Hb1ac (not sure of the letters) was 37 the nurse told me I am now in normal ranges, as long as I don’t go back to eating how I did before then I am fine. So it can’t be anything to do with my blood levels - but it is really getting to me now, and was wondering if it is something that is common with other diabetics? And if so if anyone has found something that helps it at all?

When you do start eating at lunch what is it?
I find the same thing when I don’t have enough protein or fat at lunch time.
I start my day with coffee and cream. The rare time I’m hungry or know I’m going to be very busy that morning i have some cheese or a avocado.
Lunch time I have some cold meat and veggies with a bit of mayo or full fat yogurt dip, A burger patty with cheese and salad, or olives, cheese salami and tomatoes.
If I’m hungry its because I have eaten too many carbs and not enough fat.
Hope this helps.

I also should add, well done on your A1C number.

I was hungry for the last few weeks... Not enough fat in my diet. I made keto fat bombs, and munch on one or two if my stomach protests... Works like a charm!

Mmm, u could be right about the protein as such. My colestral was high at 6.37 and the nurse said it was where I was eating too much of full fat so I’ve gone back to low fat everything - I try avoid carbs as much as possible but do eat a little carb with my main meal at night and actually this is when it’s at its worst so might try cutting them out of my main meal again - I’ve also been put onto a statin - would this be causing it to worsen maybe? thanks

There are a lot of threads here about fat and cholesterol. Maybe do some searches and find out some more information about it. Many smarter people on this forum have explained it better then I ever could.

Effectively, you have put yourself on a low carb low fat diet, no wonder you are hungry.
The thing about cholesterol (and the Total Cholesterol number means very little btw, you need a breakdown to understand what is going on) is that dietary cholesterol accounts for only about 15% of total body cholesterol. If you have changed your diet, lost or gained weight or changed your excercise regime all these things can skew your numbers temporarily. Even if you tried to cut out all cholesterol from your diet your body would just make up the shortfall. Cholesterol is made in the liver, it is vital for life. Get a breakdown of your figures and members will be able to help you to interpret them.

Hi Trish,
I used to experience this constantly hungry in the early stages until I tried a Keto diet I was amazed that dropping the carbs made me less hungry. That said I didn't last on Keto diet very long I spent all my time thinking about food, not hungry just what would I eat when I eat. :banghead:

So I switched to LCHF this was the right balance for me. not hungry and not obsessing about food.

You say you have cut back on full fat and gone low fat.
If I have read you right you looking to cut back on dairy, that's where I'm at just now. So you need to swap dairy fat for other fat that are good for you too. Avocado is almost all fat, the good kind.

This should help. ;)

I see that you edited your comment to include the fact that you have been put on a statin. Are you aware that statins raise bg levels?

Dairy fat is good fat.

Dairy fat is good fat.
Cheese, Yogurt and Dark chocolate are on that list what more do you want from me. :p
:bag:

P.s. I did go back and change the post to 'other fat that are good for you "too"' missed that word of, in case anyone thinks your picking on me. ;)

No, I was not made aware of this? I didn’t really want to go on it at all, but the nurse said that as I had started going to the gym which has greatly increased my exercise yet it has gone from 5.5 to 6.37 shows that I am failing at lowering it and that I had to go on it to protect my heart - honestly I am sick of the medical profession from only telling half the side effects - I mean I have worked so hard to lower my blood sugars I do not want anything to negatively raise them! I don’t know what my cholesterol levels were, but she did say that my good cholesterol had gone up more, but that it is the overall numbers they are more concerned with - hence the statin!!! Grrrr!!!

Aseem Malhotra who is a British cardiologist has some short talks on youtube about the cholesterol question if you want to find out more. For longer, in depth lectures try Ivor Cummins' 'The Cholesterol Conundrum' also 8n youtube. Good luck.

Trish - are you plain old eating enough? Are you losing weight on your way of eating?

Just touching on your cholesterol numbers. It would be good for you to get a hold of your numbers (the surgery should give them to you), then input them into this calculator: http://www.hughcalc.org/chol-si.php That'll help you understand a little about what's going on.

Sometimes, the cholesterol breakdowns are excellent, but when they're added up, the come to a inconveniently big number. Only by paying attention to the components will anyone really grasp it. I'm in that situation, but my Doc now understands things a lot better.

Nice HbA1c. :)

There's no law that says you have to take them.

Try getting hold of you results and someone on here will be able to break them down for you to help you understand exactly where your at.

Dr & nurse have to follow the government guide lines which means tell diabetics to eat more carbs and put people on statin's if there cholesterol is up, irrespective of exactly which part is up, they just look at the total. :meh:

I read a paper recently that said statins prolong your life span by about 4 days. :bookworm:
Sorry don't have the paper to hand.

Trishbethel, I'm exactly the same. Once I've had my lunch I am absolutely ravenous and it's like I can't stop eating. I've always had an appetite but this goes beyond being greedy. I'm so glad it's not just me
