Hi I'm new. Not sure where to put this or if I've wrote this right. I justed wanted to ask you lovely people your opinion (I have made a doctor's appointment) for the last 3 months I've had increased thirst and urination and for last month I'm falling asleep by 8/9 which is unusual for me. I already have underactive thyroid and am on metformin for pcos. Today I done a bgl about 2 to 2 and half hours after eating a very small chicken chew main and half a can of coke my level was 7.6 does that sound ok. And will the metformin affect the results. Sorry for the long message

I'm on 2000mg daily. 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg at night. A specialist put me on it permanently for my pcos. I have borrowed a meter for a few days because of my symptoms and thought I would do a few tests while waiting for my doctor's appointment. That was the first meter test I've done. I done a fasting test this morning it was 5.6 I had 2 slices of toast and a cup of tea. Bbl at 1hour was 7.6. 2hours after it's 6.9 i know their not really high im wondering if i could be pre diabetic and if these would my true readings without metformin because doesn't metformin lower bgl?

Metformin won't do a great deal to lower your blood sugars. It does help, but its help is quite limited, and it cannot be relied on to keep blood sugars down. Diet is the key.

We can't diagnose you. I'm afraid you will have to be patient and wait for your blood test results. Meanwhile, you could consider getting your own meter and test strips (you will need a lot of strips so make sure you check how much they cost. Meters are cheap by comparison and many are free) Have a good read round the forum threads and learn as much as you can about how others are controlling matters.

no, Metformin doesn't lower BG, and those symptoms could indicate a problem with glucose management.
I would warn you that - on the low carb forum I visit, there are women who start eating low carb with the intention of having a baby in a few years time when their PCOS has been overcome and in a few months they are all of a dither as nature has decided that things are to be otherwise and all their planning is shot out the window. It has happened so many times over the last decade or so I just thought I'd warn you about the possibility.
Low carb eating can assist greatly with blood glucose levels, and weight too.

For some back ground info. I also have an underactive thyroid. High blood pressure and am being referred because doc thinks I have fibromyalgia. I am 34 5"2 and 11stone 8 so over weight. From what I've read I'm at a higher risk of getting diabetes but there is so much different information It gets confusing

Thank you for all your reply, they are greatly appreciated. Thank you for the baby warning. I have 2 children both conceived on fertility treatment. If a 3rd were to happen my body would probably not be happy but the heart would be rejoycing. I have done low carb in the past just for weight control it's not helped me much but I probably now need a proper life style change regardless of test results. If I'm not careful now I probably will end up diabetic.

I test lunch time with the last of my friends strips. Before eating 4.5 (No snack or drinks between breakfast and lunch) ate 2 slices of bread and butter, a yogurt and cup of tea. At 1 hour I was 7 at 2hour I was 7.9. I have orded the tee2 meter so I can test at home for a week. Do these levels seem ok for what I ate. I've dug out my old low carb food books

Those levels are a bit high, not drastic, but not as good as they should be. The difference between your before level and your 2 hour level should not be more than 2mmol/l. If it was, then the carbs in that meal were too many for your body to cope with.

Was your yogurt a plain full fat one, or was it a sweetened/fruity/low fat one? There are a lot more carbs in the sweetened.fruity/low fat yogurts. Of course, the bread is full of carbs, too, plus the milk in your tea. These pesky carbs mount up!!

It was a low fat Low fat strawberry yogurt and white bread and tea was full fat milk. Other than not over eating I ate what I would normally eat.. well usually I would put filling in the sandwich which probably would have made the reading higher? I thought as I'm trying to see if there is a problem I should eat what I normally eat when testing before I start trying to reduce my carbs. Is that wrong? I don't know? I have an appointment with the doc on Wednesday but my doctor isnt very good unless i go in armed with evidence. It took 6 months of headaches, vision problems and home reading before the doctor put me on blood pressure meds

As you are looking for evidence, then yes, keep eating normally. That is a good idea.

Looking at what you ate, your levels were as expected to be honest. You had a lot of fast acting high GI carbs and very little fat. I would say those levels were pre-diabetic with an element of insulin resistance thrown in, but only a blood test will reveal the true situation. I am not a doctor, and am not trying to diagnose you. That is just a guess. Stressing about it may make matters worse, as stress is also a major cause of high levels.

Had you added something zero carb to the bread such as meat, eggs, fish etc your readings should not normally have been any higher. Only carbs will raise your levels. Fats slow down the digestion and spread the load out a bit, and will not raise levels. Protein has hardly any effect at all.

Thank you for all your help. I'll carry on testing and see what my doctor says. If my fasting comes back in normal range would you recommend I ask for a glucose 2 hour test (Sorry don't know the proper name) or should my doctor do that anyway based on my readings. Sorry for all the questions, I understand your not a doctor and that it's just personal opinion and advice, thanks again

Your doctor will most likely prefer the HbA1c. The glucose 2 hour test (oral glucose tolerance test - OGTT) might/will help more, but you would have to ask for this as they aren't normally routine unless it is decided necessary. This is only for practical reasons - they take 2 hours during which time you have 2 blood tests, normally just finger pricks, and this needs nurse time, and has to be fasting. They always do them for pregnant ladies, so do have the facilities.

Is 6mmol high for a non-diabetic two hour blood sugar (after pizza) would people say?

No it's not. Pizza can take a bit longer to raise bs due to the mix of carbs & fats but that two hour reading is fine.

I can't see anyone saying that the original poster is at diabetic levels. I would factor in that she is taking a big dose of metformin for another condition and home testing is not that accurate and recommend that she is checked out by medical professional.

The first person who replied said I may be pre diabetic or have insulin resistance but she said she wasn't a doctor and to see my doctor. also I had eaten a lot of high carb and high sugar things. My next lunch was 2slices of bread a yogurt and cup of tea and at 2hour i was 7.9. I made an appointment with the doctor for this week due to increased thirst, frequent urination and falling asleep by 9 which is very unusual for me. I thought I would do a few readings to take with me to the doctors and also ask what you guys thought hense the post.

Metformin does lower bsls and you are on quite a high dose. This suggests to me that you are probably at least pre-diabetic and as such you may want to look at lowering your carb intake.
