Hi everyone,
I’m new to this, only 3 week diagnosed and have only checked my bg once out of curiosity as I am on on half my dose of metformin yet. It was 8.0 pre breakfast and went to 10.4 after breakfast. I only had 2 slices of bread with natural peanut butter. Brown bread too.
Could anybody please give me ideas on a healthy breakfast without the carbs. I have been having shredded wheat with skimmed milk and blueberries thinking it was healthy only to find its full of carbs.
I feel really confused about what to eat. Feel like giving up.
Thanks everyone.

Bacon, eggs, berries with full fat yoghurt or cream, cheeses and cold cuts, good quality sausages like Heck -97% meat
Bread even brown is high in carbs if you really like a slice of bread try one of the lower carb ones like burgen soya and linseed or a high protein one like Tesco finest or warburtons- there's one called livelife that is very low but I've never tried it

Read around the low carb forum for ideas - there's a thread called what have you eaten today? That is full of great ideas.

As you say you're very new to this and it takes time to get your head round the changes, you need to use your meter to work out what you can and can't eat. Random testing is pointless it tells you nothing.

Test just before first bite then 2 hrs after to see the rise - rise should be no more than 2 points - don't give up, keep going it will soon become second nature :)

Thanks. I know, it is just so frustrating and confusing. I’m sure I will get on top of it though. I have to.

You have made a great start just by realising that cereal is full of carbs! The only time I even consider it is when I'm in hospital as they have cereal, bread and orange juice which are all laden with carbs (which makes my blood boil!).. Brown bread is really no different from white bread really and if you are struggling with blood sugars it should be totally avoided.

Bacon and eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes (though the tomatoes do have some carbs you are balancing it out with lots of much lower carb food). I'm not a great one for breakfast but I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions! You are in the right place for ideas and are on the right track!

Hi @Bigjohnjo, I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but, it may be the carbs in the bread that your body wasn’t too happy with. If you prefer toast as breakfast it might be worth trying some of the low carb ones, I prefer livlife available from Waitrose, or Hilo which if I remember correctly is available from Sainsbury’s. Alternatively omelette is a great choice and doesn’t take any more time than toasting and spreading bread, granted you have a pan to wash up but no or minimal carbs depending on what you might add to it. Egg and bacon if time allows is also a great choice or go continental and have cold meats and cheeses. There are lots of things that are more suitable for us “special people” rather than bread and cereal, you might also like to try the coconut porridge, I like it, it’s very different to readybrek mind, recipe on DietDoctor website.
Hope these suggestions are helpful, good luck and whatever you have, enjoy it.

Anything low carb is fine for breakfast. Just because Mr Kellogg told us we need something sweet and corny to “break our fast” doesn’t mean we really do.
Leftover dinner is equally good or just a coffee with cream. Try extending your natural overnight fast until lunchtime. It can work miracles.

Thanks so much. It really does help having all these nice people helping me. So much more than the doctors and nurses who told me nothing.

Don't give up. Assuming your type 2, you may benefit from lower carbs. Test BG before and 2 hours after a meal and try to keep the increase to <2mmol by cutting back on any carbs which spike it. I eat full fat Greek yoghurt, tree nuts, olives EVOO, bacon and eggs, meat and leafy vegetables. Bread pasta rice root vegetables increase BG too much and are best avoided. Your DN might suggest eating wholegrain bread. Dr Bernstein "Diabetes Solution" would tell you that advice kills diabetics because even complex carbs are just strings of simple glucose molecules, which start to be broken down by enzymes in saliva before the food even hits the stomach. Research for yourself any advice you are given. Good luck.

You have a point, I think many of us would have found our journey to lower numbers a lot longer and harder had we not found this site, we are kindred spirits here, all ready and willing to support and share our experiences. Have a great day.

Thank you so much. It means a lot knowing there are other people out there to help and bounce off.

Loads of low carb recipes on Dietdoctor.com and Ditchthecarbs website. Keep an eye out for keto porridge and add a couple of berries for flavour. Good luck.

I eat low carb coconut ‘porridge’ for breakfast with a couple of strawberries and cream:

Regarding testing, I don’t think you need to wait til your Metformin dose goes up. Metformin only helps a little with blood sugars, diet has a much more significant effect. Testing helps us learn what we can and can’t eat.
