Milk

I heard somewhere that some Diabetes specialists don't recommend Milk at all to their patients is it just because of sugar and is there any kind of Milk you can get without sugar?

Doing a quick Google it appears that milk has a carbohydrate value which is from the lactose in it.

Again from doing a search it seems that Almond Milk has virtually no carb value, but you'd have to check on that.

HTH

apart from having to include the carbs in the milk, i cannot think of any reason why there would be a reason for most diabetics to be told not to have milk. Can you tell me where you heard this please? Everything i have googled has said the opposite.

So does Almond milk not contain sugar then?

I can't remember but that's definetly what i heard!

I have heard (just in passing) that some who promulgate a lower carb way of life say to avoid all dairy but I have yet to hear a thorough explanation of why this should be. If I had to give up all dairy where would I get my healthy fats, I couldn't afford a carnivorous diet even if my old gnashers could cope with it.

Oh that sounds great 0.1g!!!!

It may take a little while to get used to when you switch from normal milk to soya as it is not sweet like you are used to with normal milk. Most cafe's and restaurants have soya milk so just ask.
Be careful to buy the chilled version as the long life variety has more sugar and carbohydrate content for some reason.
All to also have a range of yogurts, some have 0g sugars some have 1.1g and more, so just have to read the labels

What's the sugar in it? is it just sugar we have to look out for or carbs too?

Sugar is a carb. For me it is the carb count but I take note of the fat content too. The poorest for fat is skimmed milk the best for fat is whole milk but to cut the carb count I have reduced the amount of milk in my tea (which is the only time I have milk at all) to just a splash. I drink more creamed coffee now than tea.

You may well find that most cafes and restaurants have Sweetened Soya "milk" which is not to be recommended at all.. I personally wouldn't have unsweetened either but just asking for soya "milk" (its not actually allowed to be called milk in the UK) may mean you get the sweetened version.

I stick to black coffees when I am out in cafe's and restaurants, when I was transitioning from normal milk to soya I did briefly have soya when out until I got used to it black. I use the soya light at home for teas, can't have them black, have tried lol
