Cereal and porridge.

What's the recommendation with porridge and Shredded Wheat, I've had either one one of these for most of my 58 years and 56 of those I've been type 1 ?

From my experience, cereals cause a sharp spike in my blood glucose. I always used to think that I was getting away with it as my blood sugars were OK 2 hrs after eating.

Then I got a Libre! It showed blood glucose rising from 7 before breakfast, upto 13 or more and back down below 9 when I get to my office desk and test again around 2 hrs later. Modified my injection time to at least 40 mins before eating cereals and it significantly reduced the spike.
 
All I can suggest is look at what your meter tells you about the impact on your BG and act accordingly. Some folk have little ot no reaction, but others like myself do and avoid most breakfast cereals.

I always keep my eye on my BG levels to be honest, I'm just curious on why porridge is a problem I get why Shredded Wheat could be.
 
Sometimes it is the type of porridge and the processing that goes into it. The instant oats stuff is very highly refined whereas the old fashioned oats that have to be cooked and go a bit glutinous are less refined.
 
Apparently steel cut oats combined with soaking all night can provide the least glycaemic impact.

I've never not eaten porridge for breakfast, apart from if I've had Weetabix, injecting early and watching your bloods down/finding how long it takes for them to drop before eating works for me, I just can't get on with Shredded Wheat more's the pity but they spike me :)

One thing I'd say is that if you've managed for as long without you know you'll get a spike or a hypo....

From my experience of a mere 52 years on insulin, not as professional adivce or opinion:
Not sure if you know about Glycaemic Index (GI) and Glycaemic Load (GL).
If you look up mendosa.com and the definitions for GI and GL, and then look at Glycaemic Values, and Cereals down the page, you can compare the values of various cereals including the ones you asked about. Also you can see what happens when milk is added.
Whist the values relate to single foods (with the occasional combination such as cereal plus milk), they, in my view, will not give you a 'overall' value for a meal, but at least may help with choosing what to eat or not eat to avoid a hyper.
That said, I think many of us have intuitively learnt what food causes high sugars vs others and have tended to gravitate towards the least troublesome, sugar-wise.. (treats being the exception, of course)!!!
