Some people say diabetes can be caused by excessive sugar consumption, any one know what percentage of the Chinese population are diabetic 'cause we went out to a posh Chinese restaurant Monday evening and yes I did eat quite a bit but Mels cat it took a LOT of insulin to keep my BG out the stratosphere and then some and for some time after!

Last time I had a Chinese was nearly 5 years ago, 3 days before I went to Gp to tell him I’d lost both my Mojo and a ton of weight and drank a bottle of water at the chemist before I had payed for it. (If someone had tried to stop me I would have murdered them, I was so thirsty.)
The Chinese was delicious, posh and extensive. I was violently ill during the night. Major sugar overload obviously! Haven’t dared have one since.

It was indeed the american eatery and yes at my age ! should know better! But she made me do it - the daughter that is! And yes perhaps she's got me wrapped around her little finger..........

So laid back I was horizontal! :hilarious:
Daughters are **** good at finger wrapping.
Granddaughters are absolutely unbelievable in the art of finger wrapping.:)

I love Chinese especially Special Fried Rice, tre it does push my BSL up but not that much and I usually split dose which handles things nicely.

Talking of which out for a sit down Indian on Friday and looking forward to that.

And, on the Chinese meal theme, in the closing days of my two week staycation, the pub I'm currently in having a quiet pint is playing Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie and the Banshees!

That'll take posters of a certain vintage back a bit.

I remember when I first heard it as a teenager, thinking it was all about the exoticness of the East, didn't realise till later she was singing about her local Chinese takeaway in Peckham or wherever it was...

Oh I do like Chinese and Indian, well just food in general. I always under estimate how much carbs are actually in a portion of rice and it puts my BG through the roof.

As a rough estimate how many grammes of carbs are there in a typical portion of rice (egg fried rice) from Chinese, 120 grammes???

Chinese food, hmmmm, I've found by experimentation and correction doses that I can only eat a couple of dishes successfully, my locals curry and fried rice needs (needed) 2u more than my home cooked rice dishes, Indian's a different animal as those gorgeous naan breads are carb heavy for the portion size and by the time you've added a curry, keema pilaw rice and Bombay aloo you've used a little too much insulin for comfort, but then again I can trench :)
Twas food I came on to talk about as I've found a 'sweet spot using 6,5 - 7u for 90g carbs in my tea, I'm somewhere near with breakfast and I've just supper to work out now :)

Afternoon all, just in the back of the car on the way to Hay on Wye...

**** night, kept going high and had to take corrections, now down to 3.9 so obviously overcooked it. All my cats.

Thanks for the info, @kitedoc - I’m aware that abscesses form a sort of capsule which can resist treatment with the standard flucloxacillin that I have. Doc said to go back in a week if it’s not improved, but I’ll be away from home. So I may have to try a walk in centre at my mum’s if necessary. I can feel a hard area under the skin, which I assume is the thing itself. It seems to be coming to the surface from deeper down, if that makes sense?
Hi @Mel dCP, from reading and past experience of abscesses (cannot claim wizardly knowledge or powers)!!
I liken abscess formation to the body trying to wall off the infection from all sides and the tissue becomes swollen and feels quite firm. As the abscess is further constricted it reaches a stage where it softens at the point where the body is trying to eject it from deeper in towards the skin surface.. My doctor calls that the fluctuant point (words hide the less tasteful parts of the process). Trying to force the abscess or lance it before it reaches the required softness gives no or little result. It takes patience to wait it out. Unfortunately this 'under the skin war' is going to push up the BSLs !! If you read up on flucloxacillin, it is used for Staph infection but has no or only partial effect on affect other bugs. Thus the reason why an initial swab is often a good idea to see what the bug(s) are and what antibiotics are likely to work.
Repeated courses of flucloxacillin can cause liver upset. drugs.com - flucloxacillin.
If one is on antibiotics, swabs can still be taken if need be and the sample is treated so that other bugs will still grow even where say, flucloxacillin, has a partial effect. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery!!!:grumpy::grumpy::meh::meh::):):):):)

? not a reaction to MSG also??

Morning folks I hope you all have a good un

Time for a rant, again.Sunday afternoon to Sunday bedtime BG were goodish at around 6, just before bed it was 6.5. Woke to a 10.6. Monday was goodish most of day and went to bed on 5.7 but woke to a 9.6. Dawn phenomenon??.

Yesterday was good most of day except after dinner where instead of staying flatish around 6 it rose to 10.1 just before bed.

Now I have eaten same amount of carbs at same times, taken the relevant dose of insulin, with corrections where necessary. Done the same things, sod all apart from sit at a computer.

So to bed last night on a 10.1, what will it be in morning 13 maybe 14. Of course not, it dropped to 8.7 then 6.1 then 4.7 just before I got up at 6.30. At 6.45 its 6.3????:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

As I am due a visit to pump clinic next week, to assess my need for a pump, I have deliberately not been taking extra correction doses outwith meal times. Now if I had taken a correction dose last night that would have really sent me to hypo land.

So a question to those with a pump, would the pump really make a difference if my BG are so unpredictable.

No wonder we type 1's can get stressed so much:):):)
Hi @smc4761, I find the insulin pump gives me a basal better tailored to my needs than the long-acting insulin regimes ever could. And I can up the basal during stress to obtain a better overall cover for such stress and have it working in far less time than with adjustment of long-acting insulin doses.. Yes, the boluses may need upping as well during stress. Of cpurse if one can aford CGM, or use Libre and can rely on the accuracy of same,. life does become more predictable. Not saying it is miraculous and that pumps do not have their own quirks but less hypos, more predictability are improvements I can live with !!

@karen8967 your meme reminded me of the line from the BBC article about running meetings and conference calls, "And just as everyone finally gets stuck into some content, someone will inevitably crash in, apologise for being late, and the whole thing starts over. In my experience, I've found that it's best to mute yourself before you start screaming."

These meetings tend to raise my BG although working form home, I often find a way to distract myself. In the summer I paint my toenails which helps to keep my diabetes in check.
I shall have to try the toe nail painting. Beats the idea of painting garden gnomes. Perhaps the fumes of the nail varnish create a stillness in the mind and distraction from the world yet enable one to keep enough focus to continue engaging in the meeting..
Oh and nail varnish is not good to use on the ripstop nylon of kites, (mucks up the plastic coating)!!
I allow a 20% increase in my basal rate to deal with meetings - and have a habit of getting up periodically to drink cups of coffee (which I also need to allow for in boluses) or water during the time to keep me awake and moving!! I also remind myself to breathe evenly as well as moving occasionally as both seem to stop me feeling stuck in thought (breathe holding when stressed or bored does the opposite). I really envy your 'at home' conferencing style @helensaramay !!!!!:):):).

Good morning everyone! Yesterday was going well until the following happened and I don't even know why, it's like my insulin decided it was going on strike :joyful:

12 units of Novorapid correction!!!!!

Keep at it @karen8967 you'll get rid of those hypos soon enough! I've been told to stop having so many hypos the other day :s

Good morning and hello Thursday!
It's been a busy week, I had my Bone density scan on Tuesday, went by train and luckily the strike this week didn't affect my trains, Wednesday, dentist with a deep clean, today I have a follow up appointment with iCU and on Sunday a MRI scan for the upper right side of my back that is straight after work at 4.25pm, so hoping to get a lift there. Oh, and daughter was sick last night, 3am, and most of it went on the hall carpet, so, no work today as she works in a children's nursery.
Hope you are all ticking over nicely :)

Edited to say, went to bed on a 6.7 and awoke on 12.0

8.2 this morning and a head full of turnips toboot......

4.1 now which is about right as I gave myself 1 unit of novorapid.

My head has cleared but despite being in work for an hour I still feel a bit sluggish and I've eaten and had coffee.

Could just do with a nap but that's not going to happen sadly......

Have a thrilling Thursday and try rolling your Rs

Tony
