When I was diagnosed November 2017 I was in the high teens and 20s. Don't panic
It will take a while for your numbers to come down.
I didn't feel great at the time. I didn't realise how bad I did feel until I started to feel better.
Avoid insulin until you have had a chance to change your diet. My HbA1c was 122 and in 5 months I got it down to 35.
I won't pretend it was easy. It took me 4 months to break through carb addiction. I fell off the wagon many times. Once I had broken the addiction, it was a revelation. No hunger, no need to snack. The weight melted away.
I went keto almost straight away. Trying to keep under 20g carbs per day.
This may not be suitable for you, diabetes is highly personal, what works for one doesn't work for all.
