Got results today. Posting them so others can see another set of results on this thread.
Eeeek!

FBG - 6.38
Fasting insulin - 22.03
Insulin resistance index - 5.62!

Keeping my heart in sinus rhythm is priority. I also need to bear in mind that my thyroid doesn't convert enough raw hormone to active hormone and that my adrenal glands still aren't quite right either.

Wish I had known about this test before I lost 4+ stones. I wonder how much worse it was then.

Yeah, although not every day now. Maybe every couple of days. Last few times have ranged between 4.4-5.1. The highest I’ve seen at any time of day or night for a while is 5.6. Last HbA1c was 31mmol/mol but I think the next will be closer to 28-29. I’m certainly confident that my glucose is ok, and just want to know that I’m not requiring elevated insulin levels in order to achieve it :)

I'm sure your glucose is fine. I think your insulin level will be also.

I have never had a fasting insulin level done, but have had a c-peptide level done a few years ago. It was a fasting level that I asked for. GP didn't even know what a c-peptide test was. Result was 0.3 nmol/l ... this was after a 12 -13hr fast. Shows I was not making enough insulin, which isn't surprising. Putting that into the homa2 calculator with an average FBG of 5.2 at the time showed IR 0.67 and beta cell function was at 66%

I was talking to my endo specialist a week ago about this and he wants to get a c-peptide and GAD antibodies done post meal to see what is happening in response to food. So, I will post something when I get the results. It's all interesting stuff.

Interesting as you are the first person mentioning a c peptide after food, which is what my endo asked me to do. Everyone else seems to be fasting. I’m trying to find the results as I was only told it was fine. What I want to know is, if I had a very very low carb meal before, would that skew the results? Any idea? Thanks

So I got my results. Urinary C peptide ratio 2.8 and urine c peptide 3.9 nmol/l. What does this mean? Thanks

There should be a reference range used by the lab that did the test with the result.

Normal is 0.5-2.0 (from internet search) So does this mean I’m producing too much. Sorry if I’m being thick.

I don't honestly know. I would go by the ref range that came with the results. I just don't know if labs use different ranges for this kind of stuff. Maybe someone else knows, that's been following this thread.

There was no reference range given to me with it as it was in a letter. I assume I’m producing too much. This was after a low carb meal so I presume it would be much much higher if after a “normal” meal.

The reference range on mine is different to what you searched and found online. So, I'm not sure. Mine is in nmol/l units.

So my results are in. I have very low fasting insulin, but that is to be expected given my ruthless avoidance of all carbohydrate, and only moderate (no more than necessary) protein ingestion.

Glucose 4.4mmol/L
Insulin 1.7 mIU/L
HOMA-IR 0.3

I think I’ll chalk that up as a resounding success. Two years of hard work and tireless research have paid off big time. I shall be sticking with this lifestyle for the rest of my life, so I have no problem asserting that I have rid myself of diabetes. Carbohydrate intolerance likely remains, but I have no intention of ever ingesting more than just incidental quantities, so I’m happy with that :D

Thank you.

I am both surprised and happy with the ludicrously low fasting insulin. It’s actually below normal range, but apparently this isn’t a major surprise given my dietary and exercise regimen. It certainly doesn’t indicate any pancreatic dysfunction, or my glucose control would be wayward. It would appear that my liver and pancreas are now best friends again :playful:

To say I’m pleased with the results would be an understatement. Quite possibly the best money I’ve ever spent. Obsessive or otherwise :D

I’m not disputing this but why would you think so given the blood glucose AND insulin seem to be working well in tandem again? Do you believe there s some unknown underlying mechanism that threw it out in the first place likely unresolved and likely to cause the failure again if you were to reintroduce some degree of “moderate” carb eating. I appreciate you like your woe and that’s a good enough reason to stick with it regardless.

I got diabetes to begin with, starting from a position somewhere of metabolic health, so I can get it again. That is my logic. I’m unable to become obese or even fat, so I don’t have much storage where my body can convert and stash unused glucose. I don’t think it would take very long for my body to once again fill with sugar, and I’m not ever going to let that happen. Not a chance. I’ve experienced the complications and I don’t want them back.

It actually doesn’t really even matter, since I enjoy my diet and lifestyle now far more than I ever did :)

That’s fantastic. You are obviously very knowledgable about diabetes. Can you run through a typical day and food please?

I don’t really have a typical day. I’m a primal/ancestral fanboy so I try to mix it up and vary activity and eating times. I eat only real food, when I’m hungry, regardless of the time. No carbohydrate that didn’t grow out of the ground. No grains or sugar. No seed oils. Nothing processed, or even made by someone who I don’t know. Intermittent fasting every day - maximum TMAD - and no snacking. No calorie counting or macro calculations - I trust my appetite. I walk at least 5km most days, and lift weights each and every day that I’m able. Some may call it hardcore but I call it empowering.

Reaching this stage, from where I was, has been incredibly challenging and involved a lot of soul searching. But now I’m here, it’s laughably simple and I feel fantastic all the time. Can’t remember the last time I was sick or had a cold. I feel like an apex predator. The power of primal ketosis leaves me in no doubt that this is the way we are biologically programmed to live, and my blood work speaks for itself. Sorry if I seem evangelical or prescriptive but it’s really only just enthusiasm for my own strategy. I don’t presume for a moment that it would, or should, suit anyone else.

Might order a lipid panel and a new HbA1c in the coming weeks, just because I can. I’d like to go sub-30 on the HbA1c :D

Outstanding results Jim, I had mine done early January:

If my fasting insulin is relatively stable them my HOMA-IR is somewhere between 0.92 and 0.97. I think taking this measurement rates in the top 5 in the following order: Fasting Insulin / HOMA-IR, HS-CRP, HDL / Trigs, FBG and blood pressure.

I think if these markers are in the normal range you potentially reduce the risk of contracting chronic diseases, mitigate or resolve conditions, and possibly highlight further underlying issues. Krafts work was and is ignored for too long.

Fantastic results! My diet is very similar but getting out and walking while working and a family is a challenge but I do go to the gym. Fingers crossed I’m in your position in a year. I too don’t seem to get ill or catch colds since being LCHF, which I did notice when I’ve done Atkins in the past. Thanks Jim
