Very strange change in ratios

My son has been type 1 for almost 2 years and has been on 20 lantus and a humalog ratio of around 1:12

In the last few weeks he’s been having loads of hypos, we’re now down to 7 lantus and a ratio of 1:50 on humalog.

However we’re still getting loads of hypos, for example this evening he ate spag blog with 70g carbs, had 1.5 units of humalog and 2 hours later were at 2.5. Treated the hypo and up to 5.6 then 30 mins later feeling hypo again and bloods down to 2.6.

It just seems insane that such a small amount of insulin is now so powerful and why his tolerance has changed so massively.

I’ve spoke to his hospital team and they have no idea what’s going on either!

Has anyone experienced anything like this? It’s becoming very difficult to manage!

How old is he? Puberty? (Just a wild guess, I have no personal experience of this.)

Not necessarily helpful experience, but one thing we come to learn with experience is diabetes isn't a constant easy to manage thing.
I do wonder if his pancreas has decided to have a last fling - a late honeymoon. Or possibly the changes coming with growing up - childrens bodies change a lot more than adults, and the insulin requirements could well change with that.
The only advice I have is keep measuring, keep adjusting doses, even if it's apparently insane.

I more than halved my insulin when I started doing serious amounts of exercise. I was hypos all the time for about 2 weeks until I got it all adjusted correctly. Is he doing a lot more exercise or going though a growth spurt?

He could be growing but not doing any more exercise, it’s just so frustrating! 3 hypos so far one after the other this evening, that’s after eating a big plate of Spag Bol. It’s like he doesn’t need any insulin however if we don’t give any he goes high.

Might be worth speaking to DSN about this - a pump might be a good idea for the much smaller doses which are possible.

Sounds like puberty with his age. Hormones are so unpredictable. It seems strange that your team are just as flummoxed but not working to find a solution.

I'm going through something similar. Since beginning of Jan I've had to half my insulin doses and still suffering crazy hypos.

Actually just sitting here in bed at almost 2am having a snack as going low again!

Been type 1 for 21 years. Absolutely perplexed and exhausted. Hospitalised twice since Jan with severe hypo.

I hope you get answers and things level out for your son.
