A week ago I had a very bad bout of sickness and diarrhoea. I was seen or talked to several HCPs, including the 111 service, who called out an ambulance, paramedics and a nurse at my local doctors. The after-effects lasted all week.
All the advice from the HCPs was to eat something bland like plain rice /pasta, or white bread. As I have avoided these for almost three years, initially I ignored them and tried to eat small quantities of my usual food, e.g. bacon on a low carb cob. Not successful!! By Tuesday I gave in and ate white bread (at least I think that was what it was supposed to be!) from a well known baker. This bland pap seemed to be OK.

The question is, what would you have eaten in the circumstances, given that my usual food went straight through without touching the sides?

I think I might have fasted or tried with bone broth or plain steamed chicken in small quantities. And of course plenty of fluids while keeping an eye on electrolytes.

TBH, I didn't feel like eating for several days. I kept up the electrolytes with Dioralyte, and I lost over 5 lbs in as many days. One way to kick-start my stalled weight loss!

I would have eaten lightly cooked eggs either scrambled or omelette- plain chicken and if you like it plain white fish. Or if I didn't feel like eating just sipping room temp water, black tea - ginger tea can be nice too. As long as your not on any meds that require you to eat either for diabetes or other meds that need to be taken with food then you are ok not to eat just make sure you keep rehydrated- hope your on the mend :)

Thank you both for the suggestions, I have to say I hope I don't have to use them any time soon!

Was this some kind of norovirus type thing?

Yep.....I would have gone omelette too

When I am ill I am a bad diabetic! I eat whatever helps to make me feel well again. So I would have had toast or ginger biscuits.

Agree - not about you being a bad diabetic I know that's just not true! But about sometimes diabetes has to take a back seat and we have to treat ourselves holistically and do what makes us feel well :)

I would have had chicken broth or bone broth, working up to chicken soup, other soups and then small portions of real food, avoiding anything too fatty, fibrous or difficult to digest.

I'm extremely wary of the BRAT diet for gentle recovery https://www.healthline.com/health/brat-diet
Mainly because every 'approved' item on the list spikes my blood glucose, and when I am feeling ill, the last thing I want is to have wangy blood glucose too.

I had similar last Sunday night to Wednesday morning and my usual FFat Greek yoghurt and berries or eggs were a little too much for my digestion so I had 2 slices of toasted high protein bread with a little butter and marmalade which I found ok.
