I was diagnosed about a year ago with Diabetes, HBa1c 51, after 3 months, 52, 3 more months 57, 3 more months, after exercising 30 mins a day, totally changing diet, after attending Diabetes education group, I have just been informed I am HbA1c of 119 !!!

What is going on?!!

Cannot do more.

Is it 11.9% ?

There are two systems of units of A1c.

Thank you for your responses. Well the Receptionist at my doctors when I rang today definitely said 119. but mmm. yes I wonder if what she said was wrong and that she did not understand it read 11.9%. It is still high, but certainly doesn't seem quite as bad...?!

What did the Diabetes education group advise?
Well the Diabetes Education Class, tutor taught us lot, and I have been exceptionally careful with my diet. I have been studying it in great detail. I have lost weight from around 14 stone to 11stone 4Ibs, and my blood pressure has gone down from being regularly in the 140 systolic range to between 110--133 --so I felt so much had improved and fallen in to the right places! Then today, I spoke to the receptionist and got this reading of '119'!!!

I feel I might just as well have continued to enjoy myself, stuffed myself with Mars Bars, and thrown the green smoothies in the bin!

What did you change your diet to? And from? Any chance you started eating things like porridge or whole grains?

On what basis did they decide you were type 2 originally, although your avatar says prediabetic those earlier numbers are low diabetic ones. Do you take meds?

Green smoothies?
Those easy to digest drinks full of carbs from 'healthy' foods?
I bought a super blender just before diagnosis, and even blitzing salad stuff showed that it was a bad idea.
At my education sessions we were told that baked potatoes and beans was a good choice for lunch, so it must be really easy to go down the wrong path.
I can only suggest you send off for a blood glucose meter, then start to test the meals you eat to check that you are not getting too many carbs.

11.9% is still 107 on the new scale...

What did they suggest you change your diet to - and from?

My HbA1c was 51, and fasting glucose using Accu chek blood glucose system was Sept 2018, 7.2/8/1 or similar. And Hb was, in 3 month intervals, as I say 51, 52, 57, until this week when it is either 119 or 11.9 of an HbA1c system of some kind!? I am going to see my doctor on thursday. I got this latter info from the receptionist.

I changed my diet to low carb, cut out virtually all refined carbs, had lots of green stuff, seeds, nuts, low sugar fruits, lots of water....and fish, animal protein, hardly ever red meat though... Not much porridge, no...

No, no meds at all.

blood pressure is down signficantly, weight down significantly............This 119 result is amazing. Just rang receptionist again, and yes it IS 119.

No sense to this at all.

I think you need to speak to your doctor/nurse/whoever normally deals with your reviews. I am not a doctor, but in my humble opinion either you were originally misdiagnosed as T2 and you are LADA (late onset T1) or your blood sample was faulty in some way and needs doing again, and quickly, to confirm matters. Mistakes are made - too often.

Yes, thank you. I was having a read about this LADA thing earlier this evening so was interested to see your reference to it here. I am seeing my doctor on Thursday to discuss this unexpected result! However, have just done my glucose (using Accu chek blood glucose system), and it was 27.9! --------post prandial...? Now the strips have an expiry date of December 2018, and think the machine needs checking to and will get new strips and do so tomorrow. But this anyway, looks similar to the meaning at any rate of 119 on the HbA1c..?

Do you have any means to test your ketones? How are you feeling?

That is a really high number and I’d be at the very least calling 111 for some advice

No, I do not know anything at the moment about ketones, or at least very little, let alone how to measure them..? Really? I feel okay.... I am wondering whether three weeks of bronchitis during this (less than ) 3 month period might have influenced this result of 119. Do you know if that is possible?

But I am sure I am over bronchitis now....yet still got the 27.9 post prandial read blood glucose reading tonight.

SHOULD I be feeling ILL?

Illness will push numbers up.

How long after your meal did you test? 90mins or more? What was the meal? Possibly a daft question but did you wash hands etc first?

I dont want to scare you but if your numbers really are that high and you also have high ketones then dka is a risk and that can be incredibly serious. Don’t eat anything with any carbs right now and drink plenty of water. Phone and ask them what they advise as we aren’t medics on here.

thanks for this, I have drunk some water and will have some more....I have phoned 111. spoke to the 'nurse' (she said she was) who did not even know what HbA1c is! They asked me lots of questions, tick box like, categories, impossible to answer!...and a doctor will ring me back within the next 6 hours. That's nice. Its 00.51 hours. I hope I get some sleep tonight!!
