c peptide

I was recently in hospital with really high blood sugar after a three day course of steroids there they did a c peptide test and the results were 497. since then I have been in contact with the diabetic team at the hospital and my diabetic nurse and I'm still having higher blood readings they keep upping my insulin I'm on 22 units 14 at night and 8 during the day and 1000mg metformin a day to some this might not seem a lot but I started on 8 units of insulin a year ago. I'm thirsty and tired recently and having loads of toilet trips I'm careful in what I'm eating and have cut down on carbs and anything with excess sugar in and I'm more active than I have ever been. I'm type 2 by the was I'm not really sure what I can do. consultant at hospital said I'm an unusual type 2 diabetic coz I'm not over weight. just seems that no matter what I do these sugars wont behave themselves

One of the only ways to bring it under some form of control is to look at your diet

Limit the intake if carbs

I find on days that I limit my intake of carbs to under 40grams a day that my blood glucose is under much better control

Recently been on steroids? Prednesalone perhaps?
Corticosteroids will have a dramatic effect on your levels, the higher the dose, the more dramatic the impact. And it takes time for the effect of steroids to wear off.

If you are not producing enough insulin the effect of the steroids as well as the effect of lacking insulin will be very high bg levels.

Hi teddybear, So when you said you are unusual T2D because not overweight, you meant not obese?
I am T2D and borderline overweight BMI 24.9. I have been borderline overweight and 'pre-diabetic' which really means diabetic since April 2016, 4 months after triple bypass op and being put on Statins.
Not surprising in hindsight since before finding this forum I was on the so-called 'Healthy' High Carb , Low Fat diet to try to prevent heart disease. I should have known better (since I already knew Atkins diet shifted weight fast with no hunger).
But I trusted the 'experts' who said something like all T2 D are greedy and lazy.

Strange how suddenly almost half the western world (pre-diabetic and diabetic) has become greedy and lazy? - But surely it couldn't have anything to do with official advice to eat more empty calories i.e. Carbs - which equals sugar. could it?

My new favourite saying is 'You can't outrun diabetes!'
In fact the same applied to Cadiovascular problems and other Metabolic Syndrome symptoms - even athletes get it. Are they lazy, greedy or undisciplined?

Oh and by the way, Athletes such as Shot-Putters, Hammer throwers and Heavyweight Boxers are all Obese.
There has to be something wrong with the way those BMI figures are calculated and used!

Hi. Two things. Your BMI is high and indicates you may have insulin resistance thru excess weight. Do continue with the reduced carb diet. Did the Dr say where your c-peptide result was in the range from low to high? There is no standard c-peptide test so you need to understand the bottom and top figures for the test lab that was used. If the c-peptide figure showed high insulin then that again implies insulin resistance.

no dr has said no change to medication but nothing about the range. over the past few days I have been having higher than usual blood sugars drinking loads and weeing and seem to be tired at first I thought the tiredness was due to work load increasing but im not so sure now I have just checked my sugars and im 18.8 I haven't eaten in a few hours and that is nearly 3 hours after my insulin. both my tablets and insulin are slow release. I have no idea what to do
