Restricted exercise

I am desperate to do some exercise as i have done none for ages. The main problem is cardiac issues but i could still exercise but the main problem is osteoarthritis in both knees. I need a double knee transplant. I should of had surgery 5 years ago but op was cancelled due to aneathetist losing her nerve. The knees are do bad and so is blood pressure which is very high 170/100. This is all down to me not moving around. My sugar obviously is elevated at around 13-15. I am desperate and sometimes i am just waiting to check out which is inevitable. I feel so desperate and before you ask my doctor is utterly useless. I urgently need some cardiac exercise but my knees are so bad now. I got a letter from Orthopaedics at Guys telling me my file has been passed to another dept whom they feel could manage me better. In other words just passing the buck. Please please help i am so desperate

Swimming is a great aerobic activity and very very easy on your joints.

Losing weight is the key to the castle however being immobile makes it 10 times harder to shift weight
nope. It really isnt, although thats what the medics all say. I have CFS/ME. I cannot exercise. I have reduced my sugar levels by reducing my carbs. I see someone has already tagged Daisy1 for the basic info. I have only lost a couple of stones, tons more to lose, but my blood sugars are stable and healthy due to restricting my carb intake.

All is not lost, we will support you through this. Be aware that you will ned to involve your medics in reducing your carbs as you are on glicizade.

I am so grateful to you, you have no idea

Rachox, i have tried that but i end up back on the cloudy apple juice 3-4 LTRs a day. Each litre has 4oz of sugar in it. I know, deadly. It only feels good whilst consuming then i am thirsty again 30 mins later. Dreadful stuff. So nice while drinking then i feel like a dried prune 30 mins later
that will be the carb cravings caused by high blood sugars. Treat the carb cravings like you did when giving up smoking and got cravings. Its not your fault you are craving sugars. Once you get your sugars down, it gets much easier.

Hi allypops, reading this rang a bit of a bell. Just before I was diagnosed, I too had what I can only describe as an unquenchable thirst. Water (which I normally drank) did not do it for me and I could not get enough diet coke/pop down me (with their sweet taste). It was bizarre and it definitely wasn't a sugar addiction as it coincided with what I now know were other diabetes symptoms. I literally got up in the night to guzzle more and more, litres of the stuff. This went on for weeks (I know I should have gone to the Drs much sooner). Now I know it was all to do with very high blood sugar, my body was craving 'energy' as nothing was getting through due to a lack of insulin. Once my glucose levels had been lowered, I went back to normal. Please test your glucose levels. You saying you are drinking litres of sweet stuff and being thirsty 30 mins later is not a good sign. You must see your Doctor and what are you daily sugar levels like? x

Best thing is not to buy any. If there is none in the house, you can't drink it. Try something else. There are zero sugar drinks on the market. Watch out and read the labels - some are marketed as no added sugar, and some are marketed as sugar free. Read the nutrition labels and see how many carbs there are in it. The no added sugar ones will have carbs.

Thanks KK123,

I have my sugar level tester and my sugar levels are very high 14-16.

I feel like like i am on some sort of death wish. My doctor's are so useless i am on a self destruct course. The only good thing is that my latest Decs test taken last week came back normal but i know that will soon change if i don't no

I have tried not buying and just drinking water but then the next day, o nag my wife to bring home a Ribena. As i said there are so many things going wrong i just feel i want to check out. Currently i walk around daily expecting a stroke or a heart attack, it's exhausting living like this, if the doctors had done my knee surgery back in 2013 then i might of had a fighting chance. I just sit around all day unable to even go out for a walk because of my knees. None of this can be helping my sugars or getting my weight down.
Thank you for your support

Start with getting no added sugar Ribena, tell your wife right now to only ever buy the sugar free or no added sugar varieties for you, they still have carbs but so much less, take one step at a time, sort your drinks out first then move onto your food, removing one carby food at a time.
Your drinking sugary drinks is making your blood sugar high which in turn is making your body pee the sugar out which makes you thirsty so you drink more sugary drinks. You have to break this vicious circle to make a start.
Several of us have said we didn’t do much or any exercise to achieve our weight loss and normal bloods sugars, you can at least address your diet and the rest will follow gradually.

@allypops, I can so identify with much of what you are saying regarding the arthritic pain and the obesity. I could have written your opening post a few years ago.

Although I agree with what several others have mentioned about exercise not being the main solution, it certainly helps me with relief of joint pain, slowing muscle loss, and generally making me feel better. I was very immobile with a spinal injury, had needed to use a wheelchair for any getting around outside the house, and had become morbidly obese. Was ashamed and very depressed, blaming myself. Then I discovered that the local weight management team had arranged a swimming pool session for people with obesity and associated mobility and joint problems. I had always enjoyed swimming in the past, but having difficulty getting about, and worrying about others at the pool seeing me in a swimsuit, I hadn’t been for years. I gave the pool session a try, and found everyone else had the same hangups. The great thing about it was the freedom to move pain free, in the water, weightless it seemed. I progressed to going to public swim sessions, no longer caring about what people thought about me. You don’t have to be young slim and beautiful to get in the water.

I later found that the local authority had a programme of exercise sessions for older people, (50+) which included a gym with adapted machines, so those that need to can use them seated, also, chair based exercise sessions. I go twice a week, and again there are people there of all shapes and sizes, and with all sorts of ailments. Gentle exercise and moving more helps to keep mobile, and possibly the muscle toning is helping with balance. I no longer use a wheelchair.

If you have a sport centre nearby, check it out. It is possible they also have special programmes that you may find beneficial.

Regarding your love of Ribena, I find blackcurrant and blueberry tea very palateable, and it does not raise my blood glucose levels.

Best wishes.

Pipp,
Thank you for your kind kind words.
I do have a local sports centre near me so will check it out. My problem is not one of vanity and being thick skinned couldn't care two hoots what people think. It's a question of having so many health issues is it really worth me trying to tackle this mountain or just bail out as my mind is in a dark place. This constantly thinking about having a stroke or heart attack every day is so tiring and my quality of life is basically zero. It just seems so hard to tackle all this and to what end. I have these negative thoughts which i know is unhealthy and it is very hard to live with so bailing out does seem an attractive option. It's physical pain, it's mental pain, even the doctors don't really want to know, i got a letter from Guys Orthopaedic telling me i am being referred to another dept whom they feel could manage my situation better. It's basically passing the buck. This is already a referral from my GP now they want to refer me to someone else. Unless i get my knees done, then i am done for.
Will i ever get them done, i think it's doubtful. Life really sucks at present.
I want to thank everyone for all their kind words but i need to move myself and become proactive.

Agree. The depression might be sugar linked or something else,I would get it addressed. If you dont click with your Dr,you need to change Dr's.Rapport is essential.
i am on a self destruct course.
You are.You need to figure out why,not just accept it.Accepting it is just as you say,a death wish,IMO.
Best thing is not to buy any. If there is none in the house, you can't drink it.
And thats where you need to self control.Allow nothing in the house that wants to kill you. Those things are a madman with a gun readying to shoot you.You must treat it as same and protect your life from that intruder.I switched from bad drinks to ice water with lemon or lime slices and now its just my go to,period. No desire for the sugary junk that will kill me if it can.Lemon water loves me.I adapted fast when my taste buds and cravings were addressed.Easy easy choice when the truth stares you in the face.Sheesh, its even cheap, gotta love it!

I sure hope for the best, where you are at is very rough. IF you can dump the killers from your diet there is no limit to awesome things you will really like to replace them.I do youtube low carb stuff and had no idea there are so many options I cant wait to try.My biggest mind blower was finding out 85% chocolate is doable for us,who would have thought that?? That addresses the sugar candy issue right there.

Also dont forget it isnt all about you.You have a wife and family that loves you and you are extremely important to them.Do it for them too.Your wife needs you a lot,you ARE important.

When those sugars drop and doing serious commitment(dump the trash, you do NOT need it,period) to dietary choices,if you dont see a huge improvement in all aspects of your conditions i would be shocked. The difference should be night and day.A healthy body and a healthy mind go hand in hand IMO.

Its been said over and over here, sugar and carbs are killing you and you have to fight back.Get angry at them, the dirty little creeps they are.

Please dont give up.

I do understand those feelings, @allypops. I have lost weight, though still too overweight to be treated for a health problem that can prevent weight loss. Been passed around consultants until come full circle.

Forgot to mention, a benefit of exercise, especially if you can get to a group session with people who have similar health concerns, is that it releases endorphins, which lift mood.

If you can start making small changes things really can improve.
Or, as I was once told, if you have to eat an elephant do it over several mealtimes. :)
