The HCP at my GP practice spent 15 minutes of my appointment this morning (bloods for HbA1C and cholesterol) telling me how she just couldn't resist eating cake and that she was destined to get T2 Diabetes because her mum has it!
She told me it's sugar you have to watch out for/not eat as much. I said no, not just sugar - carbohydrates also - grains/root vegetables, etc. - are turned to glucose in the blood.......... Well, yes, she said, but everyone needs to eat SOME sugar - your body needs it! It felt a little strange having to explain to a (H)ealth (C)are (P)ROFESSIONAL about gluconeogenesis. Her response? Well I never!
Looking on the bright side, at least now she does know. And if that saves one other person from being told they NEED to eat some sugar, that's a good thing right? Baby steps. Baby steps.
