The HCP at my GP practice spent 15 minutes of my appointment this morning (bloods for HbA1C and cholesterol) telling me how she just couldn't resist eating cake and that she was destined to get T2 Diabetes because her mum has it!

She told me it's sugar you have to watch out for/not eat as much. I said no, not just sugar - carbohydrates also - grains/root vegetables, etc. - are turned to glucose in the blood.......... Well, yes, she said, but everyone needs to eat SOME sugar - your body needs it! It felt a little strange having to explain to a (H)ealth (C)are (P)ROFESSIONAL about gluconeogenesis. Her response? Well I never!

Looking on the bright side, at least now she does know. And if that saves one other person from being told they NEED to eat some sugar, that's a good thing right? Baby steps. Baby steps.

I could not have face palmed so hard at that, my Grandma tells me the same sometimes and it's just mind boggling how they still have that notion ingrained.

Maybe Coca Cola is paying them too?!

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
It's not so much gng, it is the simple fact that carbs are converted to glucose immediately. Was this HCP off sick when that lecture was given? Not that it takes a whole lecture to learn that one process.

It's surprising in a not surprising sort of way. I find my diabetes specialists at the GP are usually... well, I learn and can help myself more from what I read online.

I have given up trying to tell people that fruit is not a good sugar. It does the same as any other sugar. Fructose is not a magic sugar. They dont listen. No point in trying to say anything anymore.

My latest laughs are 'sugar-free' recipes that are full of date syrup, maple syrup, coconut sugar etc all of which are expensive and are somehow 'not sugar'.

Im on holiday right now (for people with disabilities), and every dinner time I feel like I’m bashing my head against a brick wall.
“Do you want banoffee pie/treacle tart/sticky toffee pudding for desert” (one main option akin to these each night)
“Can’t I’m diabetic”
“We got fresh fruit salad”
“No I’m diabetic”
“How about a piece of fruit then, that’s healthy”
“No it will send my sugars up”
“Oh we got ice cream, or flavoured yogurt”
“No, thanks” (their yogurt is really sweet so it can’t be great)
“How about a glass of fruit juice”
“..... no..... that’s the worst for sending sugars sky high”

I’m not the only diabetic here and they regularly get people who can’t think for themselves, I dread to think what they are doing for that poor guests sugars.

I really wonder what they would say if I asked for a bowl of sugar and tucked into it. I bet they would then warn me of my sugar levels.

Why do some people like to do all that pestering, it can be very annoying even when it isn't diabetes related. You need to risk offending someone for a few minutes, being firm, saying "no thank you and don't keep asking".

It's the social aspect of food - sharing and all that. I find it really difficult too, as you come across as such a kill-joy. I find it helps to say how inviting the sugary/carby food looks, but alas, I just can't partake due to carbohydrate intolerance. Some continued lamenting (helped by the fact I genuinely feel that way!) goes down well, if they continue to offer.

Still offer? Even then? I'm a chatty kind of gal, so I add that I have a choice between being as healthy as I can be, or eating the cake/fruit/bread etc and dying earlier, and I choose not to die earlier. I have to say - the offers always stop at that point.
