Hi again,

I have been low carbing for past month have had amazing results (I am 20 years old). My parents have reservations about me following LCHF. Where i live LCHF is still unknown and doctors and dietitians still prescribe High Carb and low fat diets.
On top of that they are scared of longevity of LCHF way of eating and apparently they cause kidney damage in the long run,
they have no studies or evidence and most of their concerns come from their friend circle *sigh*.

I'd really like if you guys can hook me up with links of studies about the longevity and safety of following LCHF diet.

Virta Health has the second year trial results published.

IDM and Dr. Jason Fung (consultant nephrologist) is the the go to guy on low carb diet plus intermittent fasting and as a kidney specialist it is highly unlikely that he would not only prescribe diets lower in carbs but practice the regime itself if he thought that they were detrimental to healthy kidney function.

Ah - there are so many scare stories about LCHF and everyone has heard about someone dying from not eating 'properly' - I have yet to find any logical explanation as to how eating what you can't deal with is going to be a good thing. No one has ever been able to give any details of anyone dying.
I started eating a low carb diet to keep control of my weight as eating normally made me feel dreadful and put on weight - that was when I was in my early 20s.
I am now 68 years old and have tried to eat low carb all my life. When I gave in to pressure to eat carb my health suffered. During my second pregnancy I was unwell and developed pre-eclampsia after saying how great my first pregnancy had been eating low carb - I was forced to agree to eat carbs under threat of being put in hospital.
The Atkins diet which is LCHF has been around since the 1960s and many people have eaten according to the rules for a long time.

If you, as your profile says, are 20 years old with T2 then what your parents fed you obviously didn't do you any favours..?
I'd suggest you say that you want to try if for x months and then review. That should shut them up for a while and hopefully when they see your brilliant results you can simply carry on.

Edit to add Whereabouts do you live? We may be able to put you in touch with some support..

I am from India ( I don't really blame them for the carb heavy diet. Our diets are pretty carb heavy particularly in the south)

There is a growing low carb movement in India.

My family were the same here, my Grandma sometimes flicks back to worry that I am not getting enough and freaks out about me fasting but they'll come around eventually once they see results.

My mum "kind of" gets it now, after 1 had 1 small piece of toast with salmon and scrambled eggs at christmas and my BG's were over 12 2 hours later, my poor Dad just doesn't get the fat bit though, I could cry when I eat there and I see him cutt all the beautiful fat from the meat to serve it, I try and sneak into the kitchen to nick a bit afterwards, he also struggles with my not eating breakfast, or having a cooked one then not eating for the rest of the day if I'm not hungry

I completely understand, I am also from India and I belong to a community where my parents don't even eat onions and garlic. I have really hard time making my parents understand low carb benefit, it is when my father himself is diabetic.
I have to answer their questions about my food Choices of eating non vegetarian food as well along with not eating roti and dal.
I just tell them it is what I eat now and they have to accept it.
Also I don't understand how people care about longevity when we are surrounded by such state of health that even when a kid has to take medicine just to keep blood sugar in control when it was easily preventable by better diet.
What a diabetic will do of longevity when I will have arms ,eyes or my limbs rotten away from high sugar on carby diet?

There is so much more to food and family than common sense and science! Culture, tradition, rewards, expression of love and economics all play their part, not to mention out of date advice. If one lives/works in a society where starvation is within living memory that is a real existential issue and being fat is considered a good insurance policy against hard times or a sign that one's partner is a good hunter or provider...
My sisters and I, all of whom are well into middle age, swear while laughing/not laughing that our always slim athletic (and body image obsessed) mother has a vicarious eating disorder and is determined to fatten us all up so she will look better in comparison. She will likely be pressing cookies on us till her dying day. Families! Smile sweetly and carry on with your own plans.

I must admit I do not have this problem as we all eat LCHF for our main meals in my home in fact my grandson now eats less carbs than I do.
