First day of pumping Thursday, had to take cannula out just now as developed severe itch and also bruising appeared just now, now have hard lump appeared where the cannula was sited. Is this likely to be from the cannula or the insulin?

I have attached the picture

Please remember neither I nor others here are medical professionals, but the reaction looks pretty localised. I'd guess (and I stress it's a guess) the reaction is from the cannula adhesive. Again, my guess (Yes, guess) would be that had it been the insulin your rash would have been more widespread on your body as the insulin got around.

As well as being new to pumping, was your insulin changed at the same time?

I wonder if any of our pumping colleagues, like @Juicyj , @LooperCat , @porl69 could drop in and make better guesses than me.

Sounds like a call to your pump team could be on the cards for tomorrow. I hope it all works out for you. From what I read, after a bit of a bedding in period, pumping can be quite life transforming.

In the meantime, if you begin to feel ill, or your numbers go very awry, please seek help.

Hello @Nometype1andproud

I had exactly the same when I used the mio cannula sets, I was allergic to the tubing set which went under my skin so it left angry red welts on my skin, the concern is if it’s making your bg levels run higher. I tried Calvon spray which is a barrier adhesive spray but ultimately switched to a steel cannula set - the sure t, not had any issues since.

Thanks everyone I’m due to call my DSN first thing in the morning and sort out changing to the sure t I think as she did same some people do react to these mio ones and it’s my first 2 so I think I’m definitely reacting

Going in to to see them weds in the mean time change the mio every 2nd day so changed this evening and hopefully going onto the sure t’s

Good call - I was so relieved once I’d changed over so pleased it’s been sorted for you.

So after a hellish first week 5 cannula changes, it was indeed the insulin, back on the humalog and hey presto kept a cannula in for 3 days!
