I'm at it again. It's been over a year of mostly low carb high fat but I have cycled in and out of eating carbs here and there because ketosis keeps me up at night, so every week or so I eat a few carbs before bed sometimes to see if it makes any difference. To clarify, I do not have a definitive diagnosis - only a suspected impaired glucose tolerance after having had gestational diabetes and doing a follow up GTT 2 months postpartum which gave me readings of 4.5 mmol fasting (5mmol on my metre), 12 mmol 1 hour (13.8 mmol on my metre) and 6.5 mmol at 2 hours (8.5 on mine, then 7.5 about 8 mins later). And then 2 hours after that test at home I felt shaky and did a test and got a reading of 3.7 mmol.
I'm not in ketosis all that much to be honest but I have lost close to 5 kg, which brings me back to the weight I was 6 years ago before I had my 3 children. I'd kept a 2kg souvenir after each baby even a year later so I was not happy with how much weight I had put on. I think my weight is now in the acceptable range (if on the higher end). SO I thought I would do a little bit of testing again since I'd given the finger pricking a rest for a few months while I was just eating mostly low carb.
This morning I tried 200g of cooked steel cut oats with a half teaspn of sugar and milk. (I'm not sure how many carbs there are in 200g of cooked steel cut oats but it says there's around 54g per 100 grams on the packet, I assume dry weight.) I was just going to test the one hour spike, and then the 2 hour. But at 30 mins post meal, I got curious and checked then. I was surprised it was already 8.7 mmol... SO I wondered how much higher it was going to get. But then at 1 hour, it was back down to 5.4 mmol already! And then at 1h 45 and 2 hours it hovered at around 5.6 mmol. So the spike was hard and fast. Lucky I checked at 30 mins or I would have thought I had really good blood sugar control being only 5.4 mmol at 1 hour!
My 5 year old daughter also had 180g of cooked steel cut oats and a teapn of honey and milk. I didn't really want to test her but she saw me doing the one hour test and asked if I could test her (she was very brave!) and so I did. Her reading was 4.5 mmol. Nice one hour spike there from a healthy non-diabetic child.
I haven't tested my morning fasting for a while because I am woken numerous times by baby through the night still so I am up on my feet at 5am sometimes and back in bed, so it might affect my readings somehow, but I intend on checking that soon because I haven't seen anything in the 4s for a long while - it's all been low to mid 5mmols.
My question is, can I consider my readings to be okay but still on the side where I should take stick to low carb? Is this still looking like it's leaning towards prediabetic? I know some consider a spike into the 8s to be completely normal, then others say don't go over 7.8mmol at any time if you can help it...
I know if I start eating carbs again, I will likely put weight on again, so that's also motivation not to eat too many carbs.
