Hello all
My husband has had a poorly toe for quite a while and as some folk do avoided the doc's. It got worse really infected infact and I insisted he go to gp and request a diabetes test.

He had a call today saying he needs to see a diabetic nurse but not oh its type two or pre-diabetic and being him he didn't ask any further questions.

I think it's likely he is diabetic we both have excess weight I'm just wondering what kind of diet you all find best?
I've just given up gluten and waiting on coeliac test results for myself would this benefit him or is low carb or keto better.

We've got to wait till Thursday to find out for certain what's what but i want to follow the diet with him as he will need all the support I can give.
Any Advice is appreciated many thanks

If he's being referred to a DN (diabetes nurse), without a great big rush and a panic, the odds are you're looking at T2 diabetes. This is the good bit: Life'll only get better from here on in, and by the sound of it, for the both of you. You see, coeliac and diabetes diets, they kind of mesh.... Grains are an absolute no-no for diabetics, as they would be for a coeliac. So there's quite a bit of overlap, and a low carb/ketogenic diet could well be a big health improvement for the both of you. Your gut will thank you if you are gluten intolerant, both of you will lose weight, and your husband'll get rid of high blood sugars and his wounded feet'll finally heal. (Take it from someone who walked around with pus-dripping bloody toes for about a decade. Oh man... Make that 15 years or so. I'm getting old!). Anyway.... You're on the right path here. Read up on your own suspected condition, and have a read for your husband here: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html . Compare the needs and you'll find out exactly how to get your quality of life back. Oh, one more thing: there's a more "extreme" diet out there that goes further than low carb and keto, but it's not, you know... For everyone. Still, you might want to check out the Carnivore diet. It's the lowest possible carb diet out there, with the least possible inflammatory foodstuffs. (And it will knock you over for a few weeks as you adjust. And I thought Keto-flu was tough. I'm in the middle of it and I keep botching it as the diet is new to me, but I do see the perks already, through the haze. ;))

Life will get better, this is the start of long overdue improvements to the quality of your lives.

In my mind keto is just a stronger version of low carb. I keep to less than 20 grams of carbs a day usually under 10 grams. I find it easier to stick with low carb food so no real need to weigh. As @JoKalsbeek indicates above- meat and fish have little or no carbs so you can eat them until you are satisfied. The link she posted is an awesome way to get started.

I've lost weight without really focusing on it at all and without counting calories or doing hideous amounts of exercise so I think you will benefit. I'm also gluten intolerant so keto is also good for that.

All in all my advice is- your husband will need a meter- get one and test regularly and see the results and for yourself see how you feel doing low carb. Give it a few weeks as keto flu can be rough but come out the other side and see how you are.

Hi welcome!

+1 on getting a meter right away. test and log rigorously for the first couple months. Low carb worked wonderfully for me. Lot’s of great information here on different meal ideas.
