everything good for me! getting better though x
Hi everyone - my area is under a second lockdown but I see people walking around not wearing masks and on the bus I was the recipient of some very rude language for talking about why we should we be wearing masks. I'm really worried about what could happen this winter. What has been your experience? I'm trying to get as much vitamin D as possible before winter!

It all seems disjointed and I think mixed messages from Government havent helped. Not quite sure what position we will be in in a few months time but it's hard to be optimistic. I'm just trying to stay healthy and ensure have supply of basics. I'm taking a vitamin D supplement. Dont know how helpful it will be but nails have never been in such good condition!

I am not thinking about it. As things change by the day it seems pointless to plan ahead. Next week I am on holiday on the Suffolk coast, if there is a lockdown, I don't know what will happen to my hotel bookings but I will play it by ear and come home again if necessary.

Personally I am less worried about the virus and more worried about how illogical, divisive and dispiriting this is becoming. Plus my employer's major business is hospitality and I work in a gym so my income is in jeopardy.

I'm only worried in so far that a lockdown'd be a necessary step. If things get that bad, it's pretty bad indeed. Here in the Netherlands things are rapidly going south, mixed messages from a spineless government that does no practising what it preaches, no-one wanting to comply and whatnot... It's "just a cold", after all. Sheesh. I fear for my family, as well as my friends here and abroad. And my own hide. I'm bummed about probably not seeing my branch of the family over Christmas, especially since some aunts and uncles are getting on in years and might not be with us much longer. I haven't seen any of them all year.

I was on holiday little over a week ago in one of our own provinces, where students are responsible for local outbreaks as it turned out... Oops. We're big on cat café's, so we went to one. The place was overcrowded and the health check a joke. Two students who were obviously ill sat down next to us, and we fled, followed to the counter by their halfway consumption-esque coughs and sniffles. Paying the bill, I mentioned those two and me not being willing to take the risk... The owner laughed in my face. He thought it was funny because we were at the door 10 minutes before they opened, and he thought it was hilarious somehow, that we were leaving already. Really?! His loss, I usually stick around for 2 hours or so and pay out of my nose for the privilege to be with the cats and photograph them, and now...? One tea for me, one hot chocolate for the hub, and that was it. Not even a tenner. I never spend that little... I know plenty of cafe's that take this stuff seriously, and they'll keep my custom. That place? They'll never see me again, as they don't care a hoot for their customer's health, or even their lives. It's just weird, you know...? You're either compliant or completely against the "new normal" rules, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. And in the meantime it's #$%^&'s like that owner who'll ruin it for other café's, entrepreneurs without personnel, small businesses and big ones, etc etc, who cannot financially survive another lockdown. With the first one I bought a lot of vouchers to be spent at a later date, trying to keep my most beloved spots and shops afloat. But we've had some financial blows in the course of this year ourselves, and I don't think we can do much if something happens again. I'll be damned if I don't try though!

The winter terrifies me. Everyone cooped up inside. Little ventilation. Lots of holidays... (Saint Nicholas' Name Day as well as Christmas and New Year's, here in the Netherlands)... I just hope things'll be good enough so we can see one another over Easter in 2021. Normally I'm really fanatical when it comes to Christmas fairs, markets, what have you... I have tickets for one, (rather than 8 or so...) but I don't think we'll be going, the way things are headed... Same for a Halloween fest. It'll probably all be postponed till next year, provided the event organisations don't topple. And if they do go on, well.... I have my face mask and disinfectant gels with me always! I just do what I can and hope others'll show me the same courtesy. I know they won't. But one can hope.

The last few years I've cut down on my Christmas card list. Lots of people don't send cards any more after all. This year I plan to go absolutely nuts, because I've not seen anyone at all, save for my mother on two occasions, and we've had one train wreck of a year... And I've decided that while it's not even over yet. I'll include friends and family, but also the businesses that are struggling, and my husband's co-workers, and, and, and... Just, you know, everyone. Heck, I'd send cards to every soul on here as well. But that'd kinda break the bank, this being a rather global spot. ;) But you get the idea. I'm scared and I don't want to miss a chance to tell people someone really does care about them.

So yeah. That.

I’m not worried about a second lockdown because I’ve been preparing for it, a personal one even if there’s not a national one.
Sure, I dislike the realisation that it’ll be a long time before I see my grandchildren again, but I want them, my daughters, my sons in and out law, my friends, who, like me and my husband, are nearly all over 70, to survive.
I’ve been trying to adapt my vision to delights in small things, to delight in FaceTime with grandsons, to pleasure in different form

Here in the Netherlands things are rapidly going south,
Your death figures (NL) have been in single figures since mid June according to Worldometer..are things really getting that bad?
What are hospitalisation numbers doing?

I am worried about the effects on people whose livelihoods are impacted by Covid. It’s tough! Any scroll through economic depressions and other causes of poverty will show how difficult it is: The Jarrow Marchers, mass emigrations, the Poor Laws, Vagrancy Acts, The Enclosures and ruined crofts and cottages . . . I really don’t like trying to scry the future!

Jo - 2 deaths (15th Sept)with Covid -

Netherlands case numbers are rising but again if we track them forward that is not translating into deaths or presumably hospitalisations.

https://www.bitchute.com/video/9nyIfxuOIIjs/

Useful analysis showing that the Grim Reaper isn't following along with high cases even allowing for a lag for cases to turn into illness, hospitalisation and death.
UK today 18-27 deaths with Covid according to official stats or the Google search. Yep it is up from high Summer but remember every person treated in hospital is being tested for it even if they are in for something else.

I live in a Yorkshire coast holiday town. The virus doesnt travel ,people do though. Our rates covid rates have increased dramatically. In my opinion it is time to close the car parks and so, drastically reduce the number of visitors. An altercation over wearing masks yesterday resulted in my being told ,that they(the visitor) had come on holiday to get away from all that ! I would also support closing pubs, there is nothing to stop folk from infected areas just popping onto a train and spending the day drinking here.
I may sound grouchy and nimbly but somebody needs to get a grip and quickly, the last time infection levels were at this rate, the country was in lockdown

Personally I belive in the Swedish model tweaked in hindsight. The tweaks would have been around care homes, those who must shield and the correlation between poor metabolic health a negative COVID outcomes.

https://coronadashboard.government.nl/ gives you the relevant numbers. I'm currently in a phase 2 area.

Most people who catch it now are students. It's spreading rather rapidly in student housing in the big cities (Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Utrecht etc), and especially when the introduction weeks started and there was plenty of booze and a lot of no-distance-observing. These people don't get as sick as the more vulnerable ones, but as their numbers rise, well... In three weeks, if things don't change, we'll be looking at 10.000 cases diagnosed a day. Not that the labs can keep up, as it is. (Mind you, there's 17 million people in the Netherlands. We're small.). So while infections are up, hospitalisations and deaths aren't as bad as they were at the beginning of the outbreak, as that included a lot of care homes and such, where deaths were frequent. Those people are mostly still fairly shielded now. The odds those students infect others though... They don't seem to exactly care, as they don't get as sick, as a rule. Never mind their (grand-) parents and other family members, or people at a super market, or... You get the idea. It's spreading amongst the Typhoid Mary's right now. the ones that don't get hospitalised but happily spread it everywhere. They won't get much harm from it. Others, however, will, if numbers continue to rise as they are. Basically, people are idiots. "I can't go to school because I had a corona test and don't have the results yet, so I'm hitting the town this afternoon for lunch with mum and some fun!", was one of the posts online that went viral. That's the level of idiocy we have to deal with here. (And really, these are the people smart enough to go to university?!)

I am bad with numbers. I'm really good with anxiety though. ;)

Out of interest i googled the case fatality rate for typhoid fever and its 10-30% ! Stunningly more lethal than this although both are tricky to measure if you don't know how may are infected due to all those alleged 'super spreaders'.

So while infections are up,

Please remember that these are "positive test results" not necessarily "infections".

Hospitalisations and deaths are the important figures to worry about and monitor.

If the NL is anywhere near as bad at reporting as the UK then the news will be full of "escalating cases" rather than increases in positive tests. There is a great deal of debate here as to the accuracy of the testing that is being carried out here and what people are in fact being shown to be "positive" with.

I don't know what to go with. Like I said, I'm horrible with numbers and indeed, reports differ all the time. We're either perfectly okay, or we're seriously not. All I know? Our Prime Minister usually holds his talks on Tuesday, but things got so alarming (his words!) he held a press conference last night, because he felt he couldn't wait a few more days. That's.... Troubling. The Dutch aren't particularly welcome in Denmark, Belgium and Germany any more either (though some go for provinces rather than the entire country). I dunno. Only thing I can do right now is just hang on to those masks and have my little disinfectant bottle topped up. And try not to do anything stupid.

We haven’t seen ours since a month before the March lockdown. I do wonder how much taller than me they’ll be by the time we see them again. Also miss them!

There was an outbreak of Typhoid when we were in W Africa. I remember walking past a typhoid fatality on blanket covered pallet when visiting a doctor friend for advice. There’s a vaccine for typhoid, but the poor people who were filling the wards, and dying, didn’t have access to it. I suppose that kind of experience is one of the reasons I take Covid seriously.

Hey and good luck. I am not planning on going to a rave either. Just hand washing for me.
