Hi all,

Longtime reader, first-time poster.

This forum helped me to understand the link between good control and regular testing, which had been going OK until this week.

The last couple of days my FBG has been awful — 9.2 and 9.7, when it used to never be over 6 and often early 5s. (It hasn’t been this bad since diagnosis.)

I’ve cut back on evening snacks and had not eaten for about 12 hours in both cases (and was happy with blood sugar after eating and at bedtime) so wonder if it could possibly be Somogyi effect rather than Dawn phenomenon, even though I’m not on insulin...? Either way, I’d love to know if/how you managed to tame it.

I’m on Linagliptin and not officially low-carbing, although I’ve been eating fewer carbs than ever the last few weeks as I got a bit more religious about testing! I can’t exercise due to disabling illness.

I think the best thing to do is probably test in the night a few times so I can understand what’s going on. I thought I’d try a Freestyle but turns out my phone is incompatible so finger prick it is...

Are you thinking the linagliptan is causing the low that results in the rebound ? Why suddenly cause it though?

A sudden change makes me wonder what else has changed. Could you be coming down with an illness? Have asymptomatic covid? A toothache? Be sleeping badly? More stressed?

No, just mentioned linagliptin for background really. Wondered about rebound effect because I used to have a small evening snack (varied things) which I cut out not long ago in hope of lowering morning glucose slightly, and can’t think of anything else that’s changed.

Am not sleeping brilliantly but that’s not unusual for me, ditto stress (although can certainly try to help both). Haven’t been anywhere so don’t think I’ve caught anything, although I suppose time will tell if so!

Ahhh... I really feel for yah. I’ve had changes that has meant me getting 7s instead of 6s. It’s taken me a goodly two +weeks to get to back to some sixes. For me it’s been tension over a shoulder pain and rubbish sleeping. I’ve hooked myself back onto my CEPAP machine and now getting something like a sensible sleep and my numbers are coming down again.

OK, having said all this and reading your testing, having that lift is something worth bringing to your Doctor.

Thank you — yes, going to try to get a fuller picture and then will consult my doc if no change. Glad you’ve been able to get your numbers down — shoulder pain is no joke!

Well, FWIW, I had a small snack last night and FBG was down to 6.3 this morning, not as low as I’d like but certainly better than when I had nothing before bed. So I still suspect a rebound effect was responsible for those 9s but will continue to monitor.

A snack late at night is a common way to avoid dawn phenomenon. Your liver doesn’t feel the need to dump as much as it’s not so long since you fed last. Different people report best results with varying snacks. Quite individual.
