Birthdays and Christmas

Hi all, I'm new here 2day. My hubby's been diagnosed with type 2 & had his 1st advice sess with the nurse only days b4 his birthday! On top of this we both have Fibromyalgia so prepping any food is incredibly hard for us. I now have no idea what to do to buy a birthday cake. If it wasn't for the Fibro I'd make a low sugar one, but as it is I'm stuck in bed flaring coz of his diagnosis Any advice or help?
Welcome to the forum. There's a good recipe/food section on here and you might find you get more replies in a new thread there. @Antje77 @Erin (if OP agrees).

Just one word of advice - it's not just avoiding sugar you need to be aware of - it's avoidance of carbohydrate in total. Cake - a traditional cake anyway - would give me huge problems and is probably not advisable.

Hello, and welcome. You might want to let go of the idea of cake, as low carb cakes are usually a bit of a chore to make. How about a juicy steak to celebrate? Or something big and meaty you can toss in an airfryer/oven or something, so it'll just come out done without too much work? Chicken, pork roast... Cutting carbs, not just sugars but starches too, is key for a T2, and coincidentally... Carbs are inflammatory. If you both cut carbs together, you might not flare as badly in the future. (I know it made one heck of a difference to my Sjögren's. No guarantees, but... It's easier if you do it together, and there's plenty of potential health benefits for both of you). https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ might help some when it comes to sorting out a workable diet. Figure out what works for you both, in ease of prep (where dietdoctor.com may help. No need to join up, lots on there is available for free), as well as improved diet.

You'll be fine. And he will be too. Diabetes is entirely manageable and he doesn't have to get complications. We know so much more now than the diabetics I knew as a younger woman did, 20 to 30 years ago. It's going to be alright. Stick with the folks here, learn what you can, and take a deep breath... When I was diagnosed I thought I had one foot in the grave. Turns out life's a lot better when you know what's wrong with you and you manage to treat it effectively! I'm healthier and more active now, than I was at diagnosis. I got a new lease on life, (and back then I suspect I was at death's door) and the same may be true for your significant other. It gets better. It really does. Dare to hope a little.

Hi,

Hmmm,

I Was pretty much diagnosed & whisked onto a kiddy ward the day after my 8th birthday?
Oddly, as you can imagine at a kid's party in 1976 there was a fair bit of sugar placed out.
Though my apetite wasn't good rapidly approaching DKA. I seemed to be drawn to the sausages & the cheese on the "hedgehog" cocktail stick pineapple chunk wotsit.
Since then. Lol, Easter has been an endless round of mugs with the egg replaced by socks.
At the time as a kid..... Hey, I'm still here with what should be, intact & working.
Now you may notice my current profile picture? That depicts the decoration sat on our wedding cake.
I wished a black cake in the design of the vehicle I was picking my bride up to head to the registry office?
Though I cut it as is tradition with my wife. I've never tasted it.
Christmas, is more a cheery pagan event for me.. There is plenty of decent meat on the go..

Now I'm not sure what your aproach is to alcahol? But getting wasted on some decent spirits & some LC mixers don't have a detrimental effect on my BGs. Though I wouldn't advise a novice using exogenous insulin

Looking at your profile. We are pretty much the same age? It funny what life chuck at you at certain times.

I'm rooting for you to resist those "temptations." Mine are different. We are human & there seems to be more than a few variations detrimental to our specific conditions out there.. (Reading & listening to a veriaty of accounts.)
"Just one won't hurt you?" But it can throw a curve ball.. & "peer pressure" from a non D who don't get "it" may not do you any favours ensuing?

As a global cultural "thing" I've noticed the host wishes you eat be satisfied & be merry. Be complimentary to what you can consume. & never be afraid of just saying I can't eat this. Someone else can..

My sister got the Easter eggs omitted from my tea mugs...? Lol, I don't even like tea.

Best wishes.

Fantastic reply. Thank you so much. I’m 53 and loved your outlook. Yes if you have one small piece of cake I can see it spiralling out of control. I can do this. Thank you. X

I'm 53 too.. I feel no one knows us like "us."
Don't get me wrong, I've had my "vices." Cake or desert has never been one of them. :)
