Suspected LADA

I hope I have started this topic in the the right thread.

I was diagnosed Type 2 five years ago. After struggling for the past 2 years with keto and IF to try and get my blood sugars down and my local surgery just throwing more meds at me, I finally went privately to see a diabetic specialist.
At last I have some information and LADA is suspected. My fasting insulin is 1.5 and c peptide 0.5. My BMI is low end of normal, losing weight albeit very slowly but I have never been overweight anyway. A GAD blood test taken too but I am still waiting on the results ( it’s been 4 weeks, does it usually take this long? )
I had an appointment with my GP yesterday and showed her the letter from the consultant and she has now prescribed Lantus. Eeek!
Can any body give me advice, pros and cons? A bit anxious about it all. I will see the nurse for full instructions on insulin next week but I would like to know first hand experience from other users.

T1 but not LADA so take my advice with a pinch of salt (or sugar ). If you are LADA you need insulin, so no question about taking the lantus. The weight loss is another red flag for LADA so I don't see you've got anything to lose....

I was in a similar situation to yourself 2 years ago. It was very daunting but take one day at a time and use all the support available.
GAD tests do take a while to come back, mine took about 4 weeks.

Ok.. so it was 10 years from my diagnosis to finally being told I was actually t1.. they didn't say LADA... but I'm going to take the fact it was slow onset that I am LADA

I was on insulin within 5 months of diagnosis which probably slowed the rediagnosis to t1 as it only really kicked off when I said if I'm t2 I'm stopping insulin

If you are LADA then you have no choice about taking the insulin as you are not producing enough of your own and giving more time you will totally of almost totally cease production.. so get used to it while you still produce some as to a degree your own production creates a small 'error buffer' so slight mistakes in dose are compensated for with your own insulin ... its harder when you totally cease insulin production

There are benefits 'in my opinion " to being classed t1... since being classed t1 I've had better care from the nhs

What units was your c-peptide? The GAD antibody tests do take some time. You should qualify for a referral pathway to a specialist with your BMI.

C Peptide 0.5 ng/ml. My gp hasn’t referred me on the NHS. I should request a referral, I seem to have to ask for everything else at my surgery. I may even qualify for a Libre maybe.

Hi, your story sounds kinda familiar, if you have any specific questions about the insulin, please go ahead, it’s really nothing to fear, it’s actually amazing when nothing else has been working. Easy to say that as it terrified me lol.

Interestingly I also said the same as Searley, so was given c-peptide test, I had a negative gad test but because my cpep was 0.05 they are insisting T1, I am not thin, not huge either but never been thin though so I personally doubt my dx.

Hi Fenn, when you say, they, do you mean your GP? When I told my GP that the consultant suspected LADA, she just raised an eyebrow implying that may not be the case, then proceed to say that I’m probably too slim to be a type 2. Mixed messages.
For my own peace of mind, I have made a follow up appointment with the same consultant.

Hi searley, I was under the impression that Type2 can go on insulin, and in some cases do, but then I always believed that Type2 make too much insulin but are very insulin resistant. Have I got that right?

Endo consultant is they in this case, although the GP is often they too lol
