Keto is out for me as I had numbers Of 83!! With my triglycerides. So I have to eat low fat. I also have fatty liver disease and suffer acute pancreatitis.
High fat diet affects all of these organs.

When I did calorie counting and exercise my trigs came down to 1.2 my sugars were still an issue.

Is it possible to have low carb and low fat diet were I still get enough energy?
If so what would you recommend as the max carb intake? At the moment I’m trying not to go over 100g of carbs daily.

I do exercise and have had hypos afterwards. I’m not sure what I can and can’t eat it’s driving me insane ANY ideas are welcome.

Low carb diets typically start at around 50 grams per day. Many here go down to 20 and some even less.It means that you have still not exhausted the low carb potential.Low carb and low fat wont work, so you will need to check out all the low fat protein possibilities ex Fish, Chicken breasts, eggs, tofu etc. Finally none of all this is all that easy in the beginning but it is doeable. Be patient and remain determined, especially for the first couple of weeks when trying out something new.

Many on here have followed a low carb higher fat diet to cure a fatty liver. My non diabetic hubby was diagnosed with this back in the autumn. After just one month of eating around 80g carbs daily with increased fat his ALT liver count had reduced from 123 to 59 (50 being in the normal range).

The extra butter, cream and lard improved his cholesterol slightly.

Somewhat confused here.
The 83 - is that your hb1ac (3 month average bloods)? In which case keto is ideal for that reading.

Triglycerides almost always fall on keto and hdl (good cholesterol that clears the bad) almost always rises, so despite the I’ll informed scare tactics about fat keto usually improves these measures and the ratios. Both of which are far more relevant and risk predictive than simple totals are. Carbs raise these measures way more than fat does.

Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is exactly the reason why some do keto. Again carbs cause more damage than fats do.

low carb and keto don’t have to mean eating huge amounts of fat. It simply means not eating low fat. Protein can be increased for fullness as another option too. Just avoid the highly processed fats that are inflammatory like the seed and veg oils and stick to those that naturally occur.

and what meds are you taking that cause you to hypo? It’s quite unusual that a type 2 on none or just metformin would do so unless they also have another condition such as RH. It could be relevant to how you approach diet changes.

I had similar problems to you regarding my liver and cholesterol so I cut down my fats and upped my protein which helped a lot, I only eat enough fat to satisfy my hunger - I don’t eat high fat just normal natural fats like oily fish, avocados, a few nuts, a little bit of butter and cream. I don’t remove fat from meats etc. I do find to lose weight though I still have to be aware of calories though I don’t count them religiously. Like others say eat to your meter and test if you have room to up your carbs slightly. It may be that you have some wriggle room there

just to say 83 was my triglycerides they took 3 days to get a blood test as there was to much fat in the tube the called in a specialist to do the test. I’m on Gliclazide one in the morning. Any numbers under 5mmol I start getting the shakes and fast heart beat. I’m so worried about fats. It’s all consuming I’ve got so much going on.

Something else must be going on with you (or this proves again that people are different). The 'general' consensus is that fat in one's diet does not cause cholesterol issues. That was certainly my experience - when I started eating low carb some 4 or 5 years back, many of my friends expressed 'horror' that my cholesterol would go through the roof - it did not happen!

Just a warning that if you decide to lower your carbs, you must do so gradually because of this medication. Don't suddenly stop most carbs overnight but do it weekly bit by bit of else you run a slight, but real risk of dka because of the gliclazide which has been calculated on a carb heavy diet

Yesterday I had a two egg omelette with cheese for breakfast, was out for lunch so had a ploughman’s no bread it had ham, 2 types of cheese a bit of pate and a pickle onion and a small spoon of chutney and a bit of salad - I asked for extra lettuce to wrap my cheeses and ham in. Wasn’t very hungry so late dinner/supper 2 cold 97% sausages a few cubes of cold roasted butternut squash - I love all veggies cold and a square of 90% choc

today I had mushrooms fried in a little butter on 2 slices of low carb bread. Lunch was a homemade prawn cocktail. Tonight as it’s Mother’s Day the family are having a full roast, I’ll have the pork and maybe a bit of beef too (we’ve got both) with all the above ground veggies, 1 small roastie and a little bit of gravy. I’ll put a small knob of butter on the veggies. As it’s Sunday and it’s Mother’s Day I’m having blackberries with extra thick cream and a quarter of a meringue nest crumbled in. May have wine but not sure

these are all tried and tested meals for me so I know I’m ok blood sugars wise, I do test them now and again just to make sure things are as they should be

Did you really mean DKA or should that say hypo? Dka is high glucose and high ketones usually and typically caused by lack of insulin (which glic helps you make even more of and as a type 2 hats probably already high). Hypo would be where the amount of glic is in excess to the new lower demands causing too low blood glucose levels.

I think you might need to check if there’s any decimal points or units attached to that number. Too much fat in the tube? Are you really sure that’s what was happening? Who declared this? What sort of specialist? I’m wondering if you were simply dehydrated and and standard protocol is no more than two attempts at a blood draw by any one professional before a colleague should take over (not necessarily a “specialist”)

Yes you are right. I was thinking of the 'flozins' with dka. Both the 'flozins' and glicazide can cause hypos but only the flozins show dka as a risk.

No the asked the specialist to the test lab to help them. Dr Racheal cooper lipid clinic. She told me she remembered them asking her to the lab. so my numbers raised a few eyebrows at the hospital I’m also on Fenofibrate and statins. They came down from 83mmol to 1.2mmol due to calorie counting and exercise. But my sugars stayed high. Then my trigs they went back up to 30 My pancreas kicked off as well, ended up in hospital. I’m waiting to see another diabetic hospital specialist. But covid pushed all appointments back. It was acute pancreatitis that got me admitted in the first place. And yes fat in my blood.

Hi @Nodemus

I am not on glics, just diet now

My trigs where at 6.0+ when I checked my bloods from 2011 and no one at the surgery mentioned them.

I went LCHF, once DX and I'd evaluated it's effect on me, via meter .

For clarity i didn't cut fat off meat , I used olive oil etc not seed oil . I only use butter. & I eat some nuts and occasionally have cream on strawberries.

So more low carb, healthy fats rather then high fat.

6 months got my trigs down from 5.0+ to 1.2

Whether it impacts a fatty liver, I don't know
But I do know, from my 2011 blood draw to my 2018 ones, low fat low cal had little effect
But from 2018- 2019 LCHF had a dramatic effect.

All my hdl, ldl, trigs want from high or very high risk to ideal or optimal..

Read up as much as you can.
Dip a toe in, is sensible and eat to the meter

It's what I did, and the results couldn't have been further from what everything I'd been told by 'experts' would happen

Good luck

Sorry I’m still convinced there’s an error somewhere here. Triglycerides of 83mmol/L equate to over 7000mg/dL. The world record is apparently just over 3000mg. 30mmol is still nearly 3000 mg. Whether it’s figures from one test being reported as another or decimal points being missing or sheer random numbers it makes no sense. I’m shocked that no one is running around doing all sorts of things to you with numbers like this if they are as reported here.

Ok I’m gonna go through my medical records and see what’s going on cos if this is the case then I’m shocked.
