The term "big boned" lol repeatedly told this growing up!
and it says that I do have some background retinopathy. I have small changes to the blood vessels at the back of the eye due to my diabetes. Guess I am a little scared to say the least and although there is no action needed at present, I need to keep up with my optical appointments and gp has been informed. Guess I am wondering which eye or both as they dont say and my next appointment is 12 months.

I’ve had diabetes over 40 years and I have diabetic retinopathy checks ever year and for every year for probably the last 30 years I’ve been told exactly the same thing as you ,

Lainie, don't panic.

A few years ago, I had a single result saying "minor changes" - all clear a couple of weeks later, and still all clear. I recently had my standard sight test, with the extra scan, and the optomitrist stated my eyes are in good shape.

The letter your GP receives has a little more detail than yours. It includes is the issue is one ey or both (and which eye if one), along with the number of spots.

I have had six eye scans since my type 2 diagnosis. The second one and my last one a couple of months ago showed background retinopathy. Just because you have it now doesn’t mean it will get worse, it may even get better like mine did the first time.

Its hard not panic but as my husband has told me he will now call me Lainie wonky left eye - as I am certain its the left I had nothing but problems with it all my life! Will chat with nurse next week and see what she knows.

If you have access to your medical records, you may be able to see the letter your GP receives. The results are expressed like:
Left R = 0 M = 0
Left R = 1 M = 0

That result would mean one "patch" of retinopathic changes in the right eye only and no maculopathic changes.

(Sorry, was called away earlier to devour dinner. I was starving for some reason tonight!)

I received my letter later today when I got back from work. I have access to online prescriptions but not tests results. I think I will have to put a request in to the surgery for that. Hope you enjoyed you dinner x

Asparagus, sprinkled with rock salt and chopped garlic, griddled with butter, Delicious, and only takes about 10 minutes to bring together

I had my eye screen on Wednesday and the person who did it went through the images with me. He gave me 99% as there was a very tiny spot which he said was nothing to worry about as it will dissipate in the next month or so. I’m interested to see what my letter says when I receive it

I have had Type 1 diabetes for nearly 20 years. Some years they detect background retinopathy. Some years they don't. It was almost alternating until about 5 years ago and my eyes have been clear since.

I was advised not to worry.
1. It is reversible.
2. If they were concerned, they would invite you in for further tests.

Hi Lainie71,

I've just had my eye screening test done as well and although I haven't got the results through yet I'm fairly sure it will also say " background retinopathy" and a small cataract in my left eye, because it has done so for the past 12 years. I have a brill optician that does a similar test and he tells me nothing has changed in all that time, including that the cataract also has not grown at all, at my age I thought it would have by now. So try not to worry too much because it doesn't always get worse. ;)

I have an opticians appointment next week so will see what they say xxx I have put a request in to my surgery so I can view results etc online, should take about a week to sort out x

I’ve had type 2 for 14 years and my result has always been no changes. They never mention my cataracts though.
